Limited Run Rey Goggles (Made to Order) from The Force Awakens

I've been a bit quiet lately.

There are two reasons for this:

1. I have a con to attend this weekend, and I've been going bonkers trying to prepare my costumes for it.

2. I have made a connection which *hopefully* will give me some invaluable insight into the screen used assembly and components of Rey's goggles, and if that pans out I will be able to accurize my builds even further for the subsequent runs!

So here is where I am at with run #2:

Lights will be cast after this weekend. I simply don't have time to do it before, but after the weekend is through i'll be casting them up, and then installing them on the goggles and they will be shipped out. The lights are THE only thing left to do, so we're 80% there.

I will be taking a short break after run #2 ships before beginning run #3 in order to wait for my intel to come in regarding the screen used goggles. I will not be asking for any money for run#3 until I actually begin to build them, but if I am able to get some significant insight into the production used procedures for making these I absolutely want to include that into my build so that you all will end up with an even better product than what i've managed so far.

I am ALWAYS looking for ways to improve my products for you all. :thumbsup

At this time I don't have any plans to go past run#5. Well no official plans, anyway. It will be a while before I make it that far, and i'll see then if people still want them.

I've been keeping track of who has asked to be added after run #5, and so if there are any drop outs I will work you in. :)

okie...voting time.

which pair overall looks best:

I totally see what you've done. I like the stitching a little lower along the top like you have on the right, but I'm a little more partial to the rest of the look on the left. But mine is just a knee jerk aesthetic response, not a screen accuracy comparison. They're both pretty damn amazing either way :)

also the ones on the left are my personal pair...made the way I've been building them all along.

the pair on the right were made with no faceplate. instead I used an EVA foam mat.

sure no problem! I can totally use your lenses and build you a set! consider yourself added! :)

great Rey, BTW. :thumbsup

Hi Kristen, I apologize for being so forum-challenged! I thought it would email a response, so been waiting. I finally thought I'd better see if I made your list, and here was your great reply a month ago! I will mail you my lenses, thank you - do I find your mailing address somewhere on your profile, or this thread? So sorry, have relied on my husband to tell me about the troops, past two years and then I show up, as Juno or Leia! Now I want to have an authentic Rey, so I ventured myself into forum land, not quite doing it right yet! I will check back soon, if I don't get email this time!

Kristen, your full Rey is fantastic! Is there a link back to another thread for how to do the shoulder piece and backpack, perchance? So excited to have everything!

See... I thought so too. Each time I look at the film I notice that hers are flatter and flimsier than mine... but I still prefer the look of mine with the faceplate...regardless if it's "the way it was built" or not.

I suppose I just had to give it a go...just to see if I was overthinking the faceplate thing.

I'm sticking to my formula! :thumbsup

I never really covered those things in this thread. The shoulder pad was a rush job, and the backpack--though it took a fair amount of work--wasn't properly documented either.

I bought a hand tied kitchen rug at Dollar General and cut it up for the shoulder pad...then just painted it. The webbing bits on it were odds and ends I had here at my work (I work in an military surplus store) but I can take all of the closeup pics you like of these items if it will help you with your build.

For the backpack I'd begun with a messenger bag that I'd purchased from Amazon, and cut it basically in half and stitched it back together. After it was complete (and it did look awesome) I decided (why, oh why?) to make another from scratch using raw hide.

That one looks awesome too...but I didn't really document either build. I was graciously given someone else's hand drafted pattern for the pack, and used that when I made my second pack, but the first one I just eyeballed.

The funny thing is that they turned out almost identical. :p

Hey Kristen did you see another member is selling working flashlights for Rey goggles in the project runs? Any idea on how easy these would be to fit to your goggles or if you intend on selling a working flashlight as an option on your sales thread?

Oh yes...! @JJGriffin! He's good people.

I would recommend anyone who wants to upgrade my goggles to go ahead and purchase a working light from JJ. It wouldn't be hard at all to fit it to my goggles...after all JJ's Girlfriend owns a pair of mine! :thumbsup

On the goggles upgrade front...

I have not yet heard back about the construction, but I have worked out a tentative arrangement with @JJGriffin to offer a working light upgrade for those of you who want it. This would be available for an additional cost going forward. If you already have my goggles and want to upgrade you can go direct to JJ to purchase the light either finished or in kit form.

I should receive a sample kit in a few days, and at that time we will be finalizing the arrangements, and I will be able to advise as to the added cost. I will also be able to determine just how easy/difficult it will be to adapt to my goggles, but I expect it will be simple, as we are all using the same "helping hand" mount system.

Stay Tuned :thumbsup
