Rexim? Damn near killed him!

I love that joke...

Back story:

A few years ago I made a copy of the Rexim-Favor just so I could have a replica of the ALIEN Nostromo Pistol. A few die hard ALIEN fans took an interest, so I made some molds and offered castings. However, the piece turned out to be far more popular because of the same base weapon was used for both the Dr. Evizan blaster and the Stormtrooper "Short Ranged Combat Pistol' as seen in the Visual Dictionary.

After a while the molds got to a point where I didn't feel comfortable with them any more so I decided that before I would redo them I needed to make some improvements on the master, which would include correcting two glaring inaccuracies that had always bothered me. The first was the absence of knurled bands located on the front and rear of the receiver. The second were the checker-less grips. Enlisting the aid of two other talented RPF members, Darcjedi and Juno, these problems were corrected. Jeff turned and machined the bands while Tiffany milled up two separate checkered patterns that I then molded and cast to apply on the grip. I also closed the 'dust cover', covering the ejection port and removing the cocking bolt, making it more accurate to the Trooper version of the prop. Several smaller, less obvious upgrades were also made.

The final hurdle was to address the scope issue. I wanted people to be able to use a real scope instead of a casting so I built a custom rail onto the piece that would accommodate a fairly accurate (not to mention very common and inexpensive) alternative, which I found in the 'tasco 4 x 20 rifle scope'. These can be purchased off of e-bay for around $6.00. All I needed to do was unscrew the windage knobs and turn the cleat around in the other direction since the Trooper version's scope is actually facing backwards.

So here it is:

Thanks for looking.

Thanks, fellas. It's been in the works for the last few months or so, and I'm very pleased with the way it turned out.

I'll start a junkyard thread tomorrow with more details for those interested...

Wowzers. I had one of your old ones (stormtrooper), and loved it. Very nice improvements. Do you still do the Nostromos version?

Total favorite, and a Morgan classic. I love your improvements.

Hopefully these pics will help people:

I took these last year, trying to get the hard-to-define areas:

I've noticed some extra greeblie action going on on the left side of the TK's gun It looks like a post sticking out at the bottom. I was planning on using the cocking bolt for this. I can't make out the stuff on top. I thought I had better pics, but sometimes my memory plays tricks on me. :)

Note the screw holes in the side of the gun where the scope ring bases were located for the side scope of the Evazan gun.
That's likely the exact same Rexim used in Star Wars.
The singlepoint and rings probably came off of an ANH DH-17.

Wow - I didn't even think to check if it was a SW redo.

The Stormie blaster looks like a resin cast to me - the trigger guard has the same fat curve as the ANG Rebel Blaster casts:

Yep always thought so to. Looks pretty rough around the edges.

The Evazan blaster filmed in the US (the one next to the hairy Walrusman arm) also looked like a resin casting. Who knows, maybe even the same one they turned in to the Trooper version?

Nice pictures by the way Jason. :)

This has long been my theory. Roger Christian (who would later shoot second unit for Lucas on PHANTOM MENACE and direct BATTLEFIELD EARTH) worked on both STAR WARS (as a set decorator) and ALIEN (as a production designer), where he has been credited for the Nostromo version of the Rexim. It would make perfect sense for a guy to recycle an idea for another show if he could make it look like something completely different.

As for the Rexim in the publicity shots, that's definitely a casting, you can see how they clayed up the trigger guard to make it easier (and more durable) to cast. I also came very close to adding a greeblie like the one that can be seen on the left side of the receiver, but without any real definitive view to work from it wouldn't be accurate. By leaving it off the master, I can always make it an add-on piece should it ever be indentified or revealed in closer detail...

Last week I won a book (eBay) called "Pictorial History of the Sub-Machine Gun" by F.W.A Hobart.
Published in London by Ian Allan Ltd. in 1973. ISBN = 0 7110 0422 6.

With only a few pages shown in the auction listing, I took a chance that it might have some obscure weapons used in films, like the Rexim. All BW photos, and I got lucky. Shawn's posting was just a day ahead of me posting this info for all to see:

I've got several large, thick books on weapons, but this book is the 1st to mention the Rexim.
Wonder where Chris T. got his photo for www.partsofsw.com???

Looking at Jason's photos & Shawn's buildup, this is going to be a great set of 3 projects.
(Nostromo; Stormtrooper; and Evazan)

Great info Mike.

Chris Reiff was the one that found the Rexim in one of his gun books and he scanned the picture for Parts of Star Wars. It's funny when I search the web for Rexim pics the only one I usually find is the POSW one reposted on other pages and gun forums. Unfortunately they remote link too instead of rehosting the pic.

I'm definitely making a Evazan blaster to go with my Ponda Baba blaster now.
