Revisiting the most accurate Luke ROTJ 'Hero' lightsaber

RussRep did a V2 run about 1-2 years ago. I now have 3 of the V2s now in my collection. So I'm ready for a Hero. I have the EFx reveal and the MR LE but would like original trilogy add nice fan made version.

My initial interest in the V2 was due to the fact that I had a Luke Return of the Jedi costume. You can't wear a hero because a tri-ring does not hang very well on the hook and the tri-ring is lined up directly with the activation box. Which means the box digs into your leg when wearing causing pain and costume damage. The V2 has a d-ring and it does not line up to the box.

However, over the last couple years, My attention has returned to the hero. The V2 has started to bother me because its appearance is not very well thought out. At first, you look at it an think, old beat up lightsaber with paint missing. But it does not make sense for a jedi to "paint" a lightsaber and then on top of that... in the matter of a short time, have most of that paint peel/chip away. So then you need to consider, What if the paint is not meant original trilogy to be paint, but instead weathering/scoring/whatever... So the places where you see blotchy black, it is not paint but dirty (why so dirty?). Which would mean without the blotchy paint it would be colored more like a stunt, which it colored after the hero.

I'm sure someone here knows more about the sabers and their use in production/filming. I guessing that the V2 was not meant to have the amount of noticeable screen time that it did, or the Hero was not available, or no one thought a bunch of OCD prop fanatics would scour through footage frame by frame over 30 years later.

So in short... I still love my V2s but... Anakin Starkiller, I'm ready for your next run of Heroes. :p

guys ive tired searching but cant find the answer. what is the difference between the hero and v2, is the v2 the resin stunt saber?

Here is a pretty good explanation: Elstree Props Return of the Jedi Lightsaber Auction ? Update 3 : The Original Prop Blog ? Jason DeBord's TV and Movie Prop Memorabilia Resource

It seems like new info is always coming out so take the info with a grain of salt since I do not know if it has all the latest data. However I think it will answer your question.

I guess a more simplified version would be: the hero is the one you probably see everywhere (copper neck, silver body, control box with buttons and lights). The v2 is the black, scuffed version you may see on film and do a double take. You're right, it's different as hell

anyways they Also have different origins. The hero was most likely one of the new metal stunts used on the sail barge

the v2 (and its sister, the 'shared stunt' which is quite obv redecorated to look like the hero, it's the one that that NASA took into space) were both obi wan's stunts from a new hope, painted to match the black paint job of the famous obi saber parts..grenade and whatnot.. That help? Haha there are resin copy's of both

That's a good comparison and illustrates my point quite well. Almost all other Luke ROTJ hero saber replicas are based off of resin casting that suffer from quite a bit of shrinkage, and most don't realize how much. If there is interest I would be happy to do another run.

Yes! If you're thinking of another run, count me in :)

honestly MJF - I've been undecided about this for the longest time. I was once the biggest proponent of the V2 and it still holds a special place in my heart because it's the one you seen onscreen the most. But the hero was the first lightsaber I saw in a book and somehow, it has always stuck with me. I go back and forth between an "idealized" saber vs screen-used reproduction but for me, I've just finally decided that the ROTJ hero version is the one I want. And even then, Starkiller's version is accurate to the actual prop (uneven rings, etc) so you could even debate whether that is truly idealized. But it's the one I want :)

I'm okay with ring even or uneven. But I prefer plating, anodizing or true metal type to represent coloring. I'm not an expert on the hero, but if they used paint for any coloring, I would like a more idealized option.

I did a run a couple years ago and at that time the market for Luke ROTJ sabers seemed pretty well saturated. But, if this has changed, I could always do another run over the summer. I think I sold mine for around $150.

WOHA that's the best news here since I Joined!!!!(y)thumbsup(y)cheers
I was blaming myself for not having been able to find one of Your fantastic ROTJ sabers! If You ever do it I would be in all the way!!!:D

Alberto!!!

And don't forget that über wonky activation box if you want the MoM or STAR WARS Archives Book version . . .
or will this possible new run represent the hero saber as in Vader's hands scene?

Chaim

Great pic. That's a Janice saber me thinks, very RPF old school

The D-ring, rails, and gold neck, yep looks like a Janice to me. Very affordable and well made. started selling them around 1999/2000 if remember correctly.

I had one, sold it for and SD, then sold the SD for the MR because basically they were basically the same.

This will be awesome.

I'm partial to the V2... But hero is good as well (It's idealized though, correct? original was a cast?)

How does that work though, are the base bodies the same? Then it comes to added bits, paint style, Graflex clamp or the other control box?

My knowledge of Luke ROTJ is rusty.
