Research - DBZ dragonballs!

I know for a long long time I have wanted a nice set of DBZ dragonballs, but never really found em. I made a few versions, and have seen quite a few others made, but so far its either been too small, not clear, wrong color, etc.

I am in talks with another company right now to see if they can make the crystal spheres and have the stars laser engraved inside the balls (like you see the 3d birds and whatnot).

What I am really wondering is if this is something there is a lot of interest in, or just something I would get for me.

NO idea about price right now, no idea of turnaround, nothing. This is just to see who would be interested in a set and at what price they would seem nice. So far the general idea is "we can do it, but the crystal is a special order for that size, so we dunno what they will run either".

I figure a 3 1/2" or a 4" ball, all 7 of them out of yellow crystal....

The only downside I can really think of is that the stars would be sort of white colored, but if there is a red LED base (and there is) i can see the stars lighting up and making the yellow just glow a little weird.

Just bouncing an idea out there. Not a sign up thread, not a FS thread, not even a pre-order thread. Just a "Oh, thats cool. I would throw X amount of delicious monies at you for this." thread.

I have seen some on ebay that go for about 200$+ shipped, but they are relatively tiny. about 60% size of what they should be (to me). I would rather have a "normal" sized one myself.

So... whattaya think?

Find a set?? I would think the hardest problem would be to get the Dragon's legs open long enough to cut them off and then how would you walk with those as they must be huuuuuge.

OK, I had to :p

Badmode: OFF :lol

Have you not seen the 7.5cm (approx. 3 3/16") Dragonballs that they made in Japan? I use to have a set but sold them on ebay. I'm considering getting another set from Y.J auctions since they've gone down in price a little.

I have pics if you'd like to see them.

Man, that brings back memories. I tried making the balls myself and they are a royal pain in the arse.

:p

PICS.....

if you got em share em. i had NO idea they made these things. if i could just find a set somewhere, much much much less irritation for me. the only ones i have seen have been the small 2 1/2" (at most) tiny ones.

There are a bunch on ebay, I like the clear ones better

Diameter: 4.5cm
Weight: 100 gram
Made of Clear Amber Plastic

I found these doing a google search

the last set looks pretty cool.

the ebay ones are alright but they are way too tiny for me. they look nice, but just are like... golf ball sized compared to the ones in the cartoon.

Your wish is my command :lol

I've got the 1 star and 4 star of the Japanese ones. My budget didnt allow for the rest when they were easily available. Snapped a few quick pics so ignore the bits and pieces scattered around :lol

holy crap those are awesome.......

i love em.

specially that 4 star one.

can you pm me a heads up when/if you see a set of these things? i would love to know how much they go for..

still giving thought to the laser engraved ones, but i know i wont have a "red" star if i do that.

still... THAT is the size i am talking about. man (or goku/saiyan) sized. not that tiny 2" crap.

awesome.

First of all, I dont know if saying what I'm about to say below needs me to move this to the junkyard and start a thread about it, so I'll breifly outline what I'm thinking here and start a junkyard thread.

A guy I work with has 6 of the seven balls (all but the 1 Star ball), Got them the same time I got my two, I believe he paid about £45-£50 (Around $85) per ball. They're still in their boxes and I know about 6 months ago he was thinking about getting shot of them as his new baby daughter was on the way.
I wanted one or two of them but he wasnt too hot on the idea of selling them seperately as he thought it would be harder to then get rid of them that way. All 6 are out of my pricerange and I of course already have the four star ball. Would this be worth me giving him a call and seeing if I can take them off his hands?

I know several huge DBZ fans and I think they would make great gifts. If you got something put togehter, or found a cache of nice looking representations of the Dragonballs I would probably be in for some.

I think you're right, it's something a great deal of people ask for and want, so I would think theres going to be plenty of interest in these and Im sure others will be on board to get one or two

Not a serious DBZ fan but I do read the comics on and off and have watched most of the cartoons. I always thought the balls are translucent amber with the stars INSIDE the balls. Am I totally off?

no, you are pretty much dead on.

the only problem is figuring out how to get that little star in there. lasers would get it in there nice and shiny, but it wouldnt be red. i think a red LED would make it shine pretty nice though....

course, thats just me and my love of leds and shiny things ;)

Another interesting question to ponder: Are the stars in fact flat(2D) or 3D?

If they're 2D then they can be lazer cut out of red sheet acrylic and embedded in amber resin...

They always seemed 2D to me

actually, they vary a lot.

they always seem to face the same way no matter what happens with the ball, so i would say they are 3d.

i dunno how to actually embed them in the resin though.

Exactly why I came up with the notion that they may be 3D. But then again its a comic/cartoon so of course the artist would draw them facing the reader. It'd be a real pain to show a true view of how they should look.

I don't know how to embed objects in resin either but obviously it can be done.
