Rescue Helmet (IM: Armored Adventures)

Rescue Armor in the animated series that unfortunately only lasted two seasons. ( You can see a brief in the link below)

Rescue Armor - Iron Man: Armored Adventures Wiki

Overall I enjoyed the series and liked the armored suits that came up throughout the series even more. The armors were interesting and inspiring and with the popularity of all of the new suits from Iron Man 3, I wanted to go after something that I had not yet seen attempted.

Just like any other project I began by collecting reference images, chose an appropriate scale and began creating.

First- the buck/base

Foam filler (insulation foam)-

cut and carved foam to shape

and after the foam was sealed with modpodge the first layer of clay was applied ( Chavant NSP- Hard clay)

building up clay to guide

rough shape

refining and honing in shape and sketching in lines

a little foam removal surgery

and remedied

and like the karate kid in training, wax on- wax off or in this case add clay, and rake clay.

At this point I am working the surfaces and refining the shape until I feel satisfied, in which case I will mirror it on the other side. For the most part this sculpt is going well however I am debating whether to stay the course and sculpt the helmet as depicted in the show or make it an inspired sculpt that uses IM:AA as a foundation with a more realistic approach as seen in the Iron Man films. I have my reasons, and will elaborate on that in a later post.

That's not monster clay is it? (did I miss you say what type?)

I'm having a horrible time smoothing mine. I'm doing a take on a mask inspired by 3 of CFX's sculpt's. Not to copy, I have plenty of my own originals, but since I'm starting out, I wanted to challenge myself. I find it hard to rake mine unless I hit it with a hair dryer for a minute and then it's too loose. :( Kidney works ok, but.. ugh.

Can we say "Learning Curve"? lol. Looks cool man, I never knew of .. well let me say this, I haven't read / kept up with comic stories for a decade now. I had no idea about this suit or even pepper really. My time in the comic stories were all back in the 80's and I just read what looked good, ya know?

Very cool story and I think it's great you're doing a take on her suit, rather than another one of Tony's. I like different :)

I briefly mentioned it above the pic that has the first layer of clay, I am using a Chavant clay. NSP ( sulphur-free plasteline) Hard clay by Chavant to be more specific. I chose it because it was the most similar to Chavant's deAired CM-70: “Extra-hard”, sulfur based, brown formula which I had some experience using in the past. I did want it sulphur-free though and couldn't spend too much at the time so the NSP Hard was the easy choice.

In my experience raking allows you to even out surfaces and shows you where you need to add more clay. The size of the rake will also vary depending on how large/small ( or how detailed) of an area is being worked. Only after the clay was built up, and smoothed by hand did I even think of using my 3" rake. I tend to rake only when the clay is cool though, as it's too easy to For later on in the sculpt I also will plan on using my 1.5" rake and my steels at the very end to get the surface even smoother.

I had actually already seen your WD style mask, which turned out really well if I can say so myself, and wish you the best of luck on your CFX inspired mask :)

If you don't already have them, pick up a pair of calipers. Reynolds Advance Materials has a pair of 10 inch ones for about $6.

It will help you immensely to get things symmetrical. The symmetry is the trickiest part for me when doing helmets!

Good luck!

Thanks a ton Slipknot. I had been all over ebay looking for some. But didn't like what I saw available.

I'll check them out myself.

I'm glad you brought that up, as I tried making a pair a few months ago but they were quite flimsy. I completely forgot to follow through and pick up a set of calipers.

Ended up ordering some from American Fine Arts Supplies (sculptclayandtools.com) which coincidentally I had bought my clay from as well, even though I had gotten the clay from Amazon. For the life of me I could not find any hint of a caliper on the Smooth-On or Reynolds website, must be a in store available item.

Small update-

Front

Side

Low 3/4

I plan on working in the back some more, evening out the transition from the top/rear of the helmet to base which seems a bit odd.

With a some free time tomorrow I should be able to start building up the other half of the helmet and get a better idea of how it will look as a whole. Once that comes together I'll have to decide whether I will remain true to the source material, or expand to a more stylized version.

its nice to see someone doing an armored. adventure s sculpt

Thank you :)

Only a small update for now.

I'm starting to mirror features over by trial and error. You can see I tried to copy the eye over to the left just by eye, which worked to an extent. But as I made horizontal lines to level things out any deviation of lines became more apparent.

I've gotten a little lax with this project and hope to kick my butt into gear and get this model ready to transfer to another medium. :D

it would be killer if you sculpted one of the actual iron man helmets i always like how the face plate split into separate parts

You mean like this?

If so, I've given it some consideration and may tinker around with the idea later on, but i have to get the clay finished first :)

( it looks like one heck of a challenge)

Can't put the cart before the horse ;)
