removing gold paint from ceramic surfaces

I was able to find DS9 quark's bar mug for a good price the other day but it has two gold starbucks seals on it. I can scrape them away with just my thumb nail but an "after image" or shadow of sorts still remains. Is there a light sandpaper or chemical that removes this stuff well?

Agreed.

If the seals are stubborn, dip an old scourer (the kitchen type usually on the back of the sponge *, not a metallic one) in the acetone and 'scrape' it off doing various light passes.

This sort of thing

Don't press too hard or you'll scratch the mug.

Could we see a pic of the whole thing (mug) :D ?

* If you want to live dangerously, don't ask your wife / partner / mum, and use the last one :lol

Thanks for the replies. I would never have thought of using acetone on a ceramic surface, that won't damage the glaze?

Here is a pic of the full mug and it's purple twin in action, I'll take a better one later at home:

After 15 - 20 minutes of scrubbing using a standard issue dish washing sponge and some dish washing soup I have some good results. I had planned on the acetone as a backup but I don't think I'll need it. Gold was mostly gone along with the "after image". I would have continued but my fingers started to wrinkle. I'll continue later. Sorry the pics are so fuzzy. It was very hard to get the dark green to come out and show what's left. Thanks for you help :)
