Remember when LucasArts made good games?

I have about an hour of gaming into TFU2, so I still have some time to go, but right now it is playing like a mediocre button mashing experience. Bummer; I was hoping for lots better.

I used to be a HUGE LucasArts fan. Still am of the old stuff.

They recently re-released a ton of their old classic adventure games (The Dig, LOOM, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis), and there is, of course, the re-done versions of Monkey Island 1 and 2, both of which are fantastic.

I used to love playing the Larry Holland games -- Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, X-wing, Tie Fighter, XvT (less so this one, since they ditched any semblance of story until they released the Balance of Power pack), XWA.

I loved Dark Forces 1, and thought Dark Forces 2 was pretty good. JK:O and JK:A were pretty weak, though. Those are the games that convinced me that you just cannot make good sabre combat in a first person shooter.

Really, though, with only a few exceptions (KOTOR 1 is really the only one that comes to mind) ever since about 1999, LucasArts games have AT BEST been mediocre. I include Battlefront 1 and 2 on that list because, well, they really were just mediocre. They could've been WAY better than they turned out to be.

I played the demo for TFU1. It was....ok. Pretty silly, though, and had control issues. I have no desire to buy TFU2. Maybe when it hits $10.

LucasArts became a publishing house around...I think 1999 or 2000 or so. That means they don't develop in-house. All their old talent -- Larry Holland, Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer, etc. went to other companies. But boy, back in the 90s...LucasArts was one of THE best game companies out there.

Grim.
Fandango.
:cool

Though if they made am updated X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter, and it was good, I would be all over that. I love me a good flight sim.

I would like to see TIE Fighter and X-Wing merged into one game that is playable online vs other pilots. I enjoyed X-Wing and TIE Fighter alone more than X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter.

As far as updating all the games need is new graphics online capabilities. Game play was perfect.

I finished TFUII last night. Very disappointed with the length and I thought even the targeting and camera of the game was a little better, it was still very clunky. The boss fights were super repetitive and just too long. It was fun because it was in the Star Wars universe but it lacked in a lot of areas. I wish I would have just rented it instead of purchasing it. Oh well, it was still a pretty fun game even with the problems. At least they added dismemberment and decapitation that way it felt less like I was hitting people with baseball bats.

I know this is a thread for whining - but I love the new games - there were some great one in the old days, but they have only gotten better. :thumbsup

They have cleaned house. significantly. a few times.

I'm not talking about just restructuring, I mean sitting down and saying "We need to figure out what this company is and should be about." Is it just farming out games or getting back to their roots and becoming the company that they were?

Also for the record I never bought into the whole "Yoda was tired from moving the X-Wing" argument. I think he just sighed because Luke didn't understand, not because it tired him. Otherwise he's a hypocrite for spouting all that "Size matters not" crap! :lol I don't think a single Force user can move a Star Destroyer though, just because of the energy involved.

X-Wing would be incredible, especially with the original trilogy theme and modern PC graphics. that was a fantastic game I wish I could play even now on my current machine.

They came out with Xwing95 and Tie95 a few years ago. they were able to run fine on Win95 machines. With a little rejiggering, you could get 'em to run in WinXP. Not so sure about Win7 and Vista, though. Probably wouldn't work.

But yeah, XWA was the pinnacle of those games, and was just freaking awesome. If they could take modern graphics and online gameplay and bring those games back, they'd be amazing. Likewise if you could play a co-op campaign like you could in Balance of Power for XvT. THAT was just awesome.

As for the new games, the ones I've played have been dull and medicore. All about flashy graphics rather than solid gameplay.

Pretty perfect encapsulation of the direction of the entire franchise these days. Guess if all you give a **** about is the pretty, they'll make you happy. If you're looking for substance, keep lookin'. Some folks just don't care about that, I guess. As long as it says "Star Wars" on the box and features the appropriate amount of flash, the junkies will buy.

X-Wing and X-Wing Vs Tie-Fighter would be awesome on modern hardware. I would buy that in a second! I spent a lot of time playing that and Dark Forces and Dark Forces 2. Those were great games. Sometimes I setup a Windows 95 virtual machine and play some of the classics. It's funny how the graphics looked so much better in my memories! :)

The graphics always look better in your memories lol. They were more impressive back then too because that was top of the line.

I still hold on to hope for a (polished) Bounty Hunter sequel, with more sandbox elements than the first game. Oh that would be sweet.

I loved Rouge leader and rouge squadren.

The dark forces games.

Shadows of the empire 64 (Although not a fan of the book, loved the game.)

LOVED Dark Forces etc. (Jedi Knight/Acadamy etc.).

I thought Force Unleashed 1+2 just reflected Lucasfilms dumbing down of the Star Wars franchise generally; "what would it look like if we could have 1,000 ships fighing on screen at a time?"

or "why fight one Rancor when we could have 3 - and theyre all wearing freaking Lazers!!!"

Less is more

Cheers

Jez

For those interested, DF1 through JKA were just rereleased on Steam as a package deal. $19.99 for DF1, DF2, MotS, JKO, and JKA. Not a bad deal, really. The games may be mediocre after DF2, but for $19.99 I'd say they're worth it.

I kept coming back playing x-wing w/ OT theme i downloaded at bruneras.com(i still enjoyed the graphics upgrade and simple game play,i always played the endor battle),still waiting for a good OT themed soldiers/pilots action, strategy game

So, who do we have to screw to get a new Rebel / Empire star ship battles game???? Who wouldn't wanna go up against a fleet of TIE's and fighting against the rebel scum in insanely wild dog-fights in space?

Come on... that's gonna rock. I want it. I need it. And getting jazzed up about all the Pyro X-Wing talk... I just re-got the urge to play something cool.
