"Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - June, 2013: MUST READ Goggle Info! (Page 5)

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - QUESTION: Who wants a proper goggle headstrap? (Page

Are you still going to have this in done time for the expo? I'm thinking of taking my Captain Hammer along for a photo op with Felicia, and it would be cool to run into you there.

Which Expo? I'd love to have a place to show this off, but for right now

7 goggles...has the nozzles and headstraps...hope this helps

Like I told you via PM thanks for pointing this out, it seems that the company I found with the goggles decided to cross post on eBay to hedge their bets. Luckily I worked it out and the source goggles are now on their way, ready to be harvested.

...now I just need to buy a few more sets of various goggles with the parts I need to make my glorious franken-goggles.

Has anyone ever noticed though that NPH actually wears two separate sets of goggles in the series?

In the bank heist scene he is wearing what appears to be static (rather than flip front) goggles that don't have such a thick eyepiece on them. They're the same goggles worn by two of the Dr. Horrible Groupies.

Take a look in the attached image.

Okay, now that I have some momentum on my "next best thing" goggles, I'm looking to move onto the gloves. I was looking at using the pair I linked to on the first page, replacing the normal gauntlets with new ones made of some fabric. I was thinking of using black faux suede (or perhaps real suede if I can get it cheaply enough). Does anyone have any better ideas or alternatives they can think of for the gauntlet fabric?

hi there, just registered after reading this thread.
I too am working on a red Dr Horrible costume. Very impresse with the effort you are putting into this!

My coat was off ebay, arrived today. A seller on there offers them made to size and colour of your choice. I'm quite impressed with the finished article!

I've gone for the more standard goggles, the 4 vent ones all over ebay that are kinda similar, but not as round. I've painted them up, and now thinking I'll order a second set for the extra vents.

do you still have parts from the other goggles? I'd gladly buy some off you!

On another note, I'm planning on making the wrist gun from the bank hiest shot, harder than I thought to find the right parts though!
I'm using it for a fancy dress ball and want my hands free for food and drink :p

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles sorted, now onto the gloves

I know some people don't like when other people post pictures in their threads, but if you want to post a picture or two of your coat, feel free. I see this thread as a reference for people seeking to build the same costume. So knowing what else is out there could help others out.

And sadly, regarding the other goggle parts: they are all spoken for in the form of complete replica goggles I'm building. I'm looking into developing ways of replicating the rarer parts (Like the elastic head strap) so there might be more goggle parts available in the future.

Here's the JY thread where I'm working on the goggles: http://www.therpf.com/f13/dr-horrib...parts-test-fitting-page-2-a-92229/index2.html

And a quick progress shot of the goggles as I continue to try to make them more exact (I'm building the faceplate from scratch and the eyecups are just placed on top for reference):

Good luck on your costume! I really want to see that wrist gun when you're done with it. (You may even want to start a progress thread of your own in the Replica Props section as you progress)

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles sorted, now onto the gloves

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll try and get a good picture of it.

Those goggles look excellent, if ever there are parts, I'm interested!

I had another idea for the wrist gun... I ordered some Dr Horrible business cards, so I've just ordered a dispensing card holder and an electric shuffling machine, planning on some kind of card firing wrist gun! :p

edit: also, I look nothing like NPH (beard and ponytail don't help either!) so I'm going for a slight variation of the character! This was after it arrived at work, I've since ironed it. The red isn't quite as bright as it looks here, it's darker like the one in the show.

Wow! That's a nice looking coat you've got there. Don't worry about not looking like NPH. (It tends to be a curse. Take it from me :p ) Wear the hell out of that thing and enjoy it. Some people get too hung up having to look just like face characters in order to dress as them. It is impressive when people look so similar to the actual character (Like ZenDragon as Tony Stark) but that shouldn't take away from people with great costumes but different genes.

Plus, I think a bearded Doc will look even more evil.

Who was the seller that made that coat? And if I can ask, what kind of buttons does it have. I'm impressed with the overall shape of the coat, so if the buttons are close, I'd be really impressed. And if they aren't close but you want to upgrade them, you're looking for Mother of Pearl Pin-Shank Buttons.

And as to the goggles, once I finish my current run I'll start working on replicating the vents...then the headstrap (Which I'm not even sure how to approach). If you want though, even though you can't access the Junkyard yet, I can put you on the wait list for goggles in case some of the 6 people on the list back out for one reason or another.

PM me for details on that if you're interested since we shouldn't discuss sales outside of the JY.

Seeing your coat has lit a fire under me. Now I really want my coat to parade around my house in. :p

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles sorted, now onto the gloves

Thanks! :D

The seller is 96bellyacres, the coat is available in white or red, and with the red you can choose the colour of the stitching and buttons, I went for white.
He does two versions, one with the staff and one without.
It was very quick, only a few days to make and deliver to the UK.

The buttons are just plain white, they look ok, but I has wondered about getting some mother of pearl ones. I might invest in some of those!

I've completed my goggles now, but they could be better. Only 4 vents and a blue/black strap...

I tried it on, with the boots, and it felt unnatural taking them off :p Can't wait to get my whole outfit together.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles sorted, now onto the gloves

Not much of an update, but my goggles are nearing completion:

DSCN0981.jpg

I just need to get some 1/16" plastic to use as a base for my faceplate and flip-front, then sculpt the rest of the T-shaped hinge to the proper SA form.

And the bigger news:

DSCN0985.jpg

I bought my fabric. I saw it while out today and just decided to buy it. I may eventually make it with a cotton-linen blend in ivory too (Possibly dyed to match the screen used coat), but for now the color and drape of it are close enough to SA for my taste. For some reason it looks like it has a sheen on it when I use my camera's flash, but it's relatively matte...though I may run it through a couple wash cycles to matte it even more.

...And those are my 100+ year old buttons hanging out on the fabric. I think they look right at home there, what about you guys?

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles Almost Done. Labcoat up Next!!

The material and buttons look excellent! I had a bit of a look for some buttons today, no luck, just some black ones in that style.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles Almost Done. Labcoat up Next!!

I'm still working through these goggles, trying to make them as close as possible.

Just the other day I received a shipment of 4 goggles from the same manufacturer from the same time period that share the same eyecups with the screen used ones. So I've now got those in place of the "close enough" eyecups I had on my goggles before, and it may be a slight change, but I think it really makes a difference.

What do you think?

photo-9.jpg

I'm just waiting on a delivery of a few pieces of plastic so I can finally make my faceplate and flip-front masters.

In the meantime, I've finished a full-size copy of my labcoat pattern. To anyone who downloaded the one I made, please note that you're going to need to add a slight bottom flare to the coat, and will probably need to lengthen the arm holes. I'll try to post an updated pattern once I have the chance.

The other thing I've been working on for my lab coat is the proper Caduceus Charm for the front pocket. There are a lot of Caduceus Charms out there, but none of them look like the one from Dr. Horrible's coat, so I opened up Photoshop, grabbed a few reference images and made one. I figured I could share it here for anyone else who is making their own coat. Just please don't try to turn around and sell it or profit off of it. I give it to you freely, to use for yourself, not mass consumption or profit. I want to keep this as open a project as possible, and that's the only way I can do that.

Anyway, here's the charm:

Enjoy!

I'll post again when I have more progress or more things to share with other Dr. Horribles.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles Almost Done. Labcoat up Next!!

Okay, so which of your fine gentlemen, beat me out for these: Vintage Welding Goggles Motorcycle Safety Glasses - eBay (item 280553521524 end time Sep-01-10 00:53:45 PDT)

Only a Dr. Horrible costumer would pay that much for a pair of welding goggles. I would have paid more, but ran out of time to do so.

Whoever won them, good show, but next time don't bid so early, it just raises the price you have to pay.

Damn! Those goggles would have looked great with my accurate vents and headstap put on. Oh well...

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Goggles Almost Done. Labcoat up Next!!

Okay, I have a source for a few more headstraps if anyone wants JUST a headstrap! Let me know in the interest thread here: http://www.therpf.com/f13/dr-horrible-headstraps-95030/

You'll have to provide your own goggles, but most people already dressing as the good Doctor should have a set.

I've also been looking into finding the proper fabric (for a second coat) and I'm getting close. I just got these two samples in:

photo-12.jpg

The hemp on the left has the proper weave width, but the fabric and weave are a bit too heavy. The cotton sample on the right has the proper body and weave depth, but its weave is too wide. I'll keep looking and let you guys know what I find.

...More updates coming when I have some free time.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Original Headstraps Available! And Fabric Update (Pg

this is all looking excellent. Glad to read about the goggles too!
I got some Showa Best Neoprene gloves, th edo look to be the right ones, now I just need to make the gauntlets.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Original Headstraps Available! And Fabric Update (Pg

Thank you so much for posting a free pattern. I just printed it out and it's HUGE (88 pages tiled!). Any idea what clothing size you made this? I'm a girl, 5'6", would be wearing about a men's XS, women's Medium.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Original Headstraps Available! And Fabric Update (Pg

I scaled it to the average men's height, 5'10." The pattern does need some work though, (Make sure you adjust it to your size) it's not perfect as I've been finding. The main thing you'll want to add is a flare to the bottom of the coat.

Basically just get a measuring tape, measure your neck, your shoulders, chest, waist, and height and adjust it all to fit.

For instance here is my pattern that I made out of newspaper, and modified because a lot of my original dimensions were WAY to small to be comfortable.

photo-13.jpg

And if you fit into a men's extra small, we're probably in the same boat (I'm tiny haha) So use the pattern, that image, and your own measurements as a guide and make sure it fits you before you ever cut your fabric.

Good luck!

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Original Headstraps Available! And Fabric Update (Pg

Double post, but for good reason! I may have identically shaped goggles already (Which become identical when I add the proper headstrap, vents, and paint them) BUT I still wanted an original set of silver Fibre-Metal goggles...and I found a pair.

I just bought these a few minutes ago (These are pictures from the seller, and now previous owner) and I couldn't be happier!

It's official, I'm obsessed. BUT at least I can officially call my goggle hunt over! I just cant wait until they come in!

It would take a hell of a lot of money to make me part with these things now that I finally have them.

Grats man! Looking forward to the pics once you've modified them!
