"Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - June, 2013: MUST READ Goggle Info! (Page 5)

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - HOLY @#!$ I have *Real* Goggles (Page 4)

I'll be keeping my eye on this thread! I want a small collection of Dr. Horrible props/costumes. :)

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - Original Headstraps Available! And Fabric Update (Pg

Grats man! Looking forward to the pics once you've modified them!

All these will need is a muddy brown/bronze acrylic wash!

I now have just as many of the real, Fibre-Metal, goggles as the production. They may have had three sets of goggles, but only one was the proper flip front.

Once the other 10 goggles I have are painted, they'll be 100% accurate too...if I didn't already have people committed to buying them I could have a whole Dr. Horrible Army at my beck and call!

...It's a strange dream, I know. :p

Just assume the people buying the goggles are going to be that army :p

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - HOLY @#!$ I have *Real* Goggles (Page 4)

Today, the friendly postman had a very nice present for me...and I couldn't help striking my best "lamenting Billy face" while wearing them:

I probably wore these for a good few hours today...kinda pathetic, but kinda awesome at the same time.

And now I can finally work on my gloves, which badly need suede gauntlets.

Amazing work, thank you so much for sharing your lab coat pattern, Nick. I hope it's not too complex for my wife to sew up, or for me to scale (I'm 6'2). It would be the perfect complement to my Analytical Chemistry lab.

Others in my class are wearing Dr. Carlyle from Twilight lab coats.. *sigh*.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - HOLY @#!$ I have *Real* Goggles (Page 4)

No problem. Like I said, just make sure you rough out the pattern in paper and muslin (And use my newsprint pattern as a further reference for mods) before you commit to good cloth. I've made a lot of changes to my pattern in paper that isn't in the free version. (yet) I just don't want anyone to cut fabric to the wrong size because of me. I'll try to release a FINAL-FINAL pattern after my seamstresses schedule clears up and she can help me out.

Also, NPH is 6'1" so, knowing that, if you grab some screenshots of him in the coat you can probably use them to discover the original length of it. And if you use the original length, your extra inch in height won't make that much of a difference.

Good luck, and rest assured that your classmates are all...I don't even have words, you're just cooler than they are. :lol

I think I'm gonna take the copout path on the gloves and spray the gauntlets with some flat (or maybe satin) black Krylon Fusion paint, we'll see how it turns out...

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - HOLY @#!$ I have *Real* Goggles (Page 4)

If you want a cheap fabric to make your gauntlets out of, you can always get some black felt and spray it lightly with some flat black spray paint. Not perfect, but it'll give you a different texture, if not exactly suede.

Let me know how the gloves turn out either way!

That's true, though I think my hesitation is from a lack of sewing skills. We'll see! The nice part is I can always cover up what I'm doing now with the felt/suede later.

Thanks again for all of your creativity and hard work Nick!

The goggles are amazing.

Goggles really do look great! I'm searching for a pair of my own.

Don't mention it.

And don't forget, for something like felt, glue is always an option. For something as simple as the gauntlets, though, even if you're not the best hand stitcher, you should be able to create some pretty decent results with just a needle and thread.

Thanks for the compliments guys, it really means a lot to me, especially because the hard work really hasn't even begun.

I still have a few surplus suppliers who are supposed to call me if they get the right goggles in. So if I ever get that call, I'll be sure to let you goggle hunters know.

I ended up getting one of the custom-made coats from eBay seller 96BellyAcres, and was very impressed! The coat fits perfectly, looks great, and he even overnighted it so I would get it in time for Halloween.

Nice! I'm impressed with mine.

I've just been watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and in S6E08 Rene Auberjonois plays a teacher, and in that he plays Dr Frankenstein.
Guess what lab coat he's wearing? :D

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - HOLY @#!$ I have *Real* Goggles (Page 4)

Alright guys, now that I'm finally settling into my new job in my new city, I'm looking at getting back into this project as best as I can.

The first thing I'll be doing is redoing my pattern from the ground up! I want this thing to be obnoxiously accurate.

I'm talking to a real lab coat manufacturer about the possibility of making my coat for me, too! It sure beats hoping my poor sewing skills will be enough.

I've also been hitting every fabric store I can find in NYC in hopes of finding the proper ivory/bone/natural color herringbone fabric. I've found fabrics in the right weight with the wrong weave, I've found them in the right weave (The herringbone pattern was exactly as wide as the SA coats) but the wrong weight, so I know I'm getting close.

One bit of good news: I don't have to baby my victorian buttons as much as I have because I just found a supplier that creates buttons that appear to be identical to the screen used ones for the coat! So now I can make a few different coats for myself if the mood strikes me.

I'll let you know if I have anything else to report.

Shoot me a PM. I have an agreement with them to be able to import under their minimum,so I could probably help you out. I'm just waiting on a sample, myself, to confirm they are as they appear.

Re: "Red" Dr. Horrible Costume - HOLY @#!$ I have *Real* Goggles (Page 4)

On my way home from work today, I stopped in yet another fabric store...and lo and behold, they have a HUGE roll of what appears to be fabric identical to the screen used stuff!!!

It is a cotton fabric that is light beige/bone/natural in color with a herringbone pattern that repeats every ~.14 inches...just like the screen used.

I'm so excited. Now I just need to finalize my pattern so I know how much I'll need...then double it so I can have a red coat and a white one!

Here's a quick picture with my cell phone (Sorry, I forgot to bring my camera with me when I moved)

And this one was snapped right outside the store...I was very excited.

AND! The lab coat company has said they would be more than happy to work with me on this project. I provide them with fabric, buttons, and the image of the caduceus, they send me a finished lab coat!

It's good news all around!

...so many exclamation points.

-Nick

PS: The bad news is there appears to be only one roll of this fabric left in existence!
