As this project finally turn into serious idea I edit the first post, please consider it, and understand some replies from other members may not be accurate as I replaced pictures or deleted them.
My plan was to buy and modify a relicmaker idol, removing the original finish to bring it to a real antique precolombian artifact finish.

I also wanted to replace original eyes, for genuine glass eyes:

First because they were much more accurate on the statue, because of diameter and color.
That choice was also for aesthetics, as the finish looked much more natural.
Here is scale comparison,
On left side by side relicmaker vs screenshot, really enlarged, on right side by side modern vs antique glass eye:

From what I remember, my glass eye had 12mm iris and 3,5mm hole, I think the best would be a 3mm hole.

Sadly I lost those eyes, so I come back to A plan, which was much more elaborated, as the idea was to make stone or shell eyes.

So that is my ambitious plan for the next steps: carve eye body from white shell, and iris from rock crystal, it will have a backside, painted with pigments and I will use some black glue, preferably natural, to seal all together.

The shell base will be thick, but ot that thick, as I will drill entirely, as some people shared pictures later in this thread, precolombian statues had shell eyes, and drilled through, with different material insert, rock crystal was used in antique egyptian statues:

Egyptians did flat cabochon, with intaglio on back side to make the pupil, and pigment all around
I modified the cornea design a bit to get something even more realistic
Egyptian on left, my idea on right.

I'm really interested to see how this turns out!

After a discussion a different thread, I wanted to make a ceramic version of the idol. I did make one, but I need to revisit the project and make a new one fixing the mistakes and things I'm not happy with.

Just in case you don't have the scale; the Colombian artefact you've linked is quite small and these type of figures (thought to represent a shaman) are typically under 10 cm high.

The first step has been to remove all the original finish to get raw bronze.
I put the statue into fire.
The base is bronze but there was a kind of primer, like in car painting on it, then a chemical nickel deposit and finally a small amount of gold and if I remember, a final warnish on it, to protect gold.
All flaked into the fire, and after some sanding down and cleaning, this is the result:

Historically precolombian artifact inspired finish, on a Relicmaker idol.
I will sand down, make special finish, and put antique glass eyes on it.
First picture is idol , eyes removed, before I burnt it to remove all paint and plating.
It's already very different now, I started removing the orbital tool lines, to get a hand finish, I use a stone.
Second picture is original eyes and the antique eyes, smaller iris pupil, better color, will be more accurate.
Third picture is side by side (photo from Relicmaker)
Last picture is precolombian gold artifact for the reference.

Very nice!

Did you make the antique eyes or find them? Are they available somewhere?

Hello,

Ater quite a lot of time without working on that idol, I was starting to think bout something crazier than the first project.
I think I will finish that modified relicmaker, which will get gold plating, and those old glass eyes.
I am also thinking about making a complete sculpt and get it made from bronze, but I am thinking about getting a flame gold plating, not electrolytic plating.
As chachapoyan culture is from Peru, and chimu culture is also from peru, I am thinking about making the eyes from shell instead of glass so it could possibly match historical item, which would be 2000 years old.
I will see, first finish that one, then, see in future.

Hello, some news.
as you can see on my previous pictures, the relicmaker eyebrows are too sharp, so I reworked on them.Tomorrow the idol will get new sandblasting and metal brushing, slight polishing, and after that it will be gold plating time.
No fire gold plating sadly, as I never got any reply, shame, because it would have been much better!
This will be the most expensive non-production fertility idol ever made, ahaha.

Good news : the statue has it's gold plating, I will get it back on next week.
Bad news, I don't know where i put my old glass eyes, it means I don't have any glass eyes left and impossible to find similar, those were antique hand blown glass eyes...
I had a much crazier idea in the beginning, but finally chose the easy path, when I found that old glass eye set.
But as I lost them, I may finally choose the hard path, that was my thought for several weeks already.
And today I saw publication about ancient egyptian art and specifically about eyes.
So I will carve them from white stone (jade) and include a yellow citrine cabochon, whcih I will carve on back side to add colors and black pupil, for realistic 100% stone eye set, that will make it even more authentic!

Ouch! Sorry to hear the antique eyes have gone missing, that's a blow. Rest of your idol is looking great so far.

A while back I was considering making a historical idol and put quite a bit of research into the materials used to craft South American artifacts. My plan for the eyes was to inlay them with sections of sea shell. Probably would have worked OK for the whites, but the irises would have been a pain to figure out. Look forward to seeing how you work your solution. I've never cut stone, sounds challenging.

Sea shell also was my first idea, and I may use that material in the end, I will see, I bought two stone balls, but in the end I may use sea shell, much more accurate material for precolombian artifact.
I remember I used sea shell on my tintin arumbaya statue, which was inspired by chimu statues, and those had shell inserts.
I will search for that material.
