Re-inventing Lukes ANH Lightsaber- And Vaders too??!?!

Yup.

Okay, geez, I hate to jump in. I'm pretty much with you all on the 7 Grip thing. But I was staring really closely at the now famous 7-Grip photo of the saber on the ground, it's laying right on the ground at Luke's feet. I mean it really looks to be right on the ground.

Shouldn't it be propped up a little sitting on at least one of those grips?

Chris, could you post it one more time on this page? Thanks.

I see it propped up on two grips. There's a bit of a shadow on the ground from the rear grip.
Here it is again:
<img src=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/lonepigeon/sevengrips.jpg>

Now, I went digging for more pics that we don't have up here yet. I found a few.
One- the infamous B&W photo of Hamill in the poncho talking to Lucas on location-Tunisia.
<img src=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/lonepigeon/anhlucas.jpg>
It's one of the clearest shots showing the onscreen clamp orientation (actually top half orientation). Also notice the lever sticking way out. It seems to be this far out onscreen several times (could be the result of switching around the top after promo shots). Also notice the grips, sure looks like 7 to me.

Two- promo shot of Luke and Ben looking out at Mos Eisley (shot on location).
<img src=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/lonepigeon/anhmoseis.jpg>
I know this one sucks, but we need everything. I count four grips (two are overlapping in the shadows on the left). Interesting thing here- check out that gap on the right. I think that is the B.A.G., not enough for a whole grip but big. Maybe one fell off in the Tunisia heat and they stuck it back on off center. The grip to the left of the gap is awfully close to the next grip.

Finally, the shot in the Falcon. I found this one in a book from the UK that is completely illustrated with nice quality screen caps. I thought it might be a bit sharper than what we've seen.
<img src=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/lonepigeon/anhfalcon.jpg>
I still have no real conclusions on this scene.

I'll keep digging for more.

PS- Scott I think that D-ring assembly looks good. The inside bend has a nice angle. Could we see a profile?

Okay, yep. I'm convinced. You can see it's on the front grip, and it would be rolling backward if it wasn't sitting on another. Then there'd be the seventh!

Thanks! I've got a grip set on order to make the fix...

Chris, you beat me to it, I was going to scan 2 of those photos from the George Lucas Biography and post them.

I also bought a LD player off of e-bay last night, So I should have 425 line resolution Screen Caps in about 2 maybe 3 weeks directly from a digital source of ANH.

The video on LD players is analog.

I'll make the caps I promised tonight.

It's an old punch rivit. I don't think they used that style on the saber itself...rather, they probably drilled it out and used a screw or regular pop-rivit. Punch rivits are done by machines on assembly line type runs.

Sure can Chris, I'll take a bunch more pics of it when I get back to work on Monday and post them here.

In the above picture posted by Chris... I wanted to also point out the lever position as Chris mentioned!

It's not closed all the way.

I've got a DVD of ANH mastered off the LD - it looks pretty crisp onscreen, but being a bootleg, I have no idea how it was transferred. I'll see if I can get some better caps this weekend.

Well, I just got my grips from Blas-tech...Unfortunately I ordered them before the 7 grip discovery..
Anyhow I just put the grips on my Graflex and I can without a doubt, 100% confirm that the saber shown in the "publicity" pics has 7 GRIPS!...I positioned all of the grips (except for the other one I still need to order from Blastech) in the exact same spot as all of the saber pics showing the saber from different sides..And they all match PERFECTLY, even the spaces in between!..And, If I remove the top half of the Graflex and flip it around so the control box is on the opposite side it matches PERFECTLY with the pics of the screen used saber.
Also, the D-ring IS in fact 1"1/16 wide and the bracket 3/4" wide...After I placed the d-ring attachment from Blas-tech on the bottom of my Graflex I compared it to the "toe" pic and it was very clear that it was just a tad too small and the brackett not wide enough.
Just thought Id let every one know...

Yup, I put seven grips on my graflex a few days ago...I decided a practical test was in order.

Refferring to the "toe" pic if you put seven grips on a graflex in the same orientation, it will definately sit on the ground the same way.

It would sit on grips #5&6 according to the pic below:

gripcount.jpg

BTW just for the record, you can also see in the pics that Lonepigeon posted, the gap between two of the grip remains centered on the control box, further reinforcing my theory that the clamp and bottom are joined together.

Made the caps. Since I have trouble with printroom sometimes, and since it only presents pictures over a certain size at full resolution if you're the owner of the album or have been granted special access, I made a password-protected album.

Go here:
http://www.printroom.com/ViewAlbum.asp?userid=treadwell&album_id=105567

password: rpf

Although out of order, you'll see the entire movie frame and also a blowup of the saber within that frame. Contrast was adjusted for the blowups.

If any photoshop gurus would like to try additional tricks, I will gladly email you the unaltered .tiff files I saved the complete frames as. (Blowups exist as .jpgs only.)

Verdict? Not sure about the "missing" grip, but I do count four visible grips in several instances, with gaps narrow enough to support 7 grips IMHO.

There are a few other pics in the album you can just ignore.

I welcome any additional efforts from other cappers out there, but be aware a DVD boot of this same LD source will have undergone compression so the caps won't turn out any better. In the end we're still talking a 720x540 image, with the saber only a tiny part of it.

If anyone has a PAN AND SCAN LD of ANH, as someone suggested, we can get higher res caps.

Feel free to link and post away with these pics.

EDIT: Looks like my little trick didn't work, it still won't show the complete movie frames at full res. Oh, well, the blowups seem to be okay.

Chip, youre absolutely right, it matches perfectly with the "toe" pic all the way around...
Also keep in mind that if you remove the top shell and rotate it around you'll get the axact placement of the screen used saber.

The grips are spaced approximately 5.5mm apart..

Also I think I might have found something else too...Chip, take a close look at the clamp from your first (numbered grip) pic...Look close enough and I think you can make out part of the letters that make up "GRAFLEX" on the band...Most likely part of the "E", only thing is that the positioning seems to be a bit off, but none the less. If this is so this could mean that no metallic tape was used...

Teadwell- Great screen caps,...I looked at them and compared them to my saber which I just converted and heres what I think..
Pic- SAB13Z- The pic from the Falcon cargo hold seems to show alot of space between grips...Im guessing 6 grips here

Pic-SAB2Z- Scene in bens house, you can barely make out any space between grips so Im guessing this had 7 grips

Pic-SAB3A,B,C,DZ- This is the dead Jawa discovery scene and shows the "Big ass" gap, while this gap isnt quite big enough to accomodate an extra grip in that space, it is however QUITE a bit of space for a 7 grip saber...And not only that but theres another space next to it just about the same size...
Im guessing 6 grips also..

Pic-SAB4- This is the scene where Luke jumps out of the speeder in Mos Eisley..I can barely make out any space between grips so Im guessing 7 grips....

While I am 100% convinced the "publicity" pic saber has 7 grips and I do think the screen used saber is the same one in the "publicity" pics I do however think the that while this saber was on screen it had both 7 and 6 grips at different times during filming...

Metallic tape on the Skywalker ANH was ruled out awhile ago. It was an ESB innovation which continued to the ROTJ V2 (Graflex band from ESB with tape still on it?).

Just thought I would post a pic of the D-rings I have on hand here:

deeclip.jpg

The clip is .750" accross, and the ring is .875" with an outer measurment of 1.125"

Those numbers sound right to me. A 1" D looks too big, and the .750 D looked a little on the small side when I tested it.
