R2D2 Build

Thanks. That's what I was going to use if I ever finished mine. But then they figured out it was the machinist's blue. But said it was difficult to apply.

here is what i'm doing for the panels.. Hot glue on half side to keep it in place, JB weld on the other, remove hot glue, repeat JB weld. i'm doing this for the panels on the back front/back frames. Do I need to do this for the ones taken off the front back/front frames as well?

I love delivery day. jag foot worr deep pocket vents. looks like I might have to buy a alum backing for the vents to have something to screw onto the frame..

no major progress.. I'm getting the top vent finalized with light jb weld. I JB welded up the holes in the back skins. before that, i made sure both front and back skins where perfectly even and met in the middle of the skin holders. Then i marked the hole placement, jb welded over the holes, and tommorow i'll drill final holes to get them all into place. THEN i can replace the power coupling and other odds and ends on the front skins.

after that, it'll be re-attaching all of the panels to the skins. has anyone done this before? curious of your method.

just airing out my thoughts here so I get some things straightened out in my brain, so sorry for the non update update :).

- I got the first front vent finalized. Held in with hot glue and jb weld. that'll go in it's final resting place tommorow.

- I'm going to try and focus on the rear inner/outer skins. I've got them all perfectly lined up. they fit on the frame like a glove. The first step is to try and invest in some clamps (soon as i find some good ones). can anyone recommend something i can get at sears or amazon?

- second step is to jb weld the frames together. third step is to make sure that once everything lines up, and it's all welded in place, put the panels back onto the frame. Then the back of the droid will be complete.

If I can get all of that done, I can then easily remove the back frames all in one piece. Then I can focus on the front. Once the front is done... I can then focus on getting the dome properly spinning. After that, it'll be working on the legs

Here are all the back panels properly arranged..

Here is the finished front grate..I have to dremel away some of the bottom part to get it to fit right

progress today... hopefully the top vent looks good, cause it's done. bottom one soon.

The start of the front coin return is done. that took forever just to get that far. I have no idea how tough the rest will be. the dremel sparks on this thing so much i'm afraid to use it..

The Deep pocket Vent fits pretty good as is..I think I might wind up jb welding that one in once it's painted. All in all, the body is almost done...

Well, this was one hell of a pain in the neck, but it's FINALLY done. All the bad holes where filled up on both frames. And now I've got the back frames perfectly alligned, and once I drill three more holes on the front frame (not pictured here, that's the inner front, inner/outer back) those will be done. The front frames need a bit of sanding and a final paint and they'll be done. Then once I get some clamps, I can put a dab of JB weld here and there and weld 'em together and be done with it.

Next step is to paint the deep pocket vent and glue it in to the rear frames. However, I REALLY need clamps. anyone recommend a good brand?

R2D2 - Life Size - Dome Construction - January - July on Vimeo

And since people seem to like the head video (don't be afraid to comment there :) )...I'll be doing one for the body. There's so much information out there, but if you're looking for something specific, good luck finding it :). I think it'll be a great help to new builders to see a highly documented construction job being put into video form, with all the mistakes included along the way to show you what not to do :).

plus, i've gotta look for more fun space music that people might not expect. The first video had Short circuit, Batteries Not Included, Out of this World, and a sesame street song in it :).

What kind of clamps do you need? Harbor Freight has those squeeze clamps which are nice. If you have an Ocean State Job Lot, they have them for a good price. You can also find spring clamps there. They may even have some in dollar stores or Dollar General. Big Lots has them too I believe. If you're looking to hold things temporarily you can use binder clips.

just something to hold the body panels together tight. all the reviews i saw on amazon where a tad confusing. Some seemed to fall apart with little to no effort, others seemed to leave dents in the material being clamped..etc

Harbor Freight's plastic ones are OK, and very cheap. Believe I bought (for the same purpose) some metal clamps from Home Depot. They are very strong for their size (inch, inch and a half long), and if I recall, were only like $0.25 - 0.30 each. Not a bad investment for something like this, and small enough to fit within most of the body panels.

If you want to check them out, they're usually where all the clamps are (duh), but in a plastic bucket/container, not on a pegboard.

Good luck,

I found a new blue that looked a little closer to R2 than the one i'm currently using. mine now seems too dark. this looks lighter. I made the first mistake of the day by removing the tape on the bottom pocket. I'll have to repaint that one silver. other than that, the deep pockets are done and painted.

The Front Coin Vent that WAS done pro is fitted and sits rather nicely.. IT might be upside down or reversed, will check before I glue in. I was going to do my own front coin return because I thought the steel used was a tad too thick and protruded above the front skin a bit much, but I guess it really does sit a bit nicely... now I just need to d

Hmmm.... I was going to say the same. You will get a much better finish with light coats of paint rather than one thick coat.
it is...

I WAS going light.. but this is the 2x ultra cover stuff..even light it goes on thick.. will never master the art of spray paint

the next part i'll have someone else paint it :)

I've decided to JB weld together the warped front frames. I'm done with drilling on the right side, so I'll tackle that first. I just put a small dab of it in the warped areas to keep them held together for panel placement later. This should def make them easier to take on and off in the future.

the bottom front vent is done. only this one doesn't fit right either..I'm going to have to figure out which area to sand to get it to slide in just right.
