Questions About Bond Films that You Have been Afraid to Ask SPOILERS

I would file under "it's a movie." Not snarking at any of us, I just accept some plot points as necessary literary license.

Watched Thunderball, :thumbsdown after watching Dr No, FRWL and GF. Keeping in mind I haven't watched old Bond in many years. I found myself laughing alot because Austin powers scenes suddenly became much funnier! :lol The Jet pack pulled me out of the story from the start, and the really lllooonnnggg underwater fight with no music? :confused It was still fun, but on a whole I don't have much good stuff to say about it. Going to watch YOLT tonight, I'm looking forward to OHMSS (it was the 1st one I ever saw @ age 6!)
I'm trying to watch all the Bonds in the order they were made :cool, however, I'm finding it hard to resist the urge to get Casino Royale before I re-visit the Moore era films. I grew-up (sort of:)) seeing RM as Bond in the the theater, and SC on TV (before VHS!), so will seeing CD as Bond lessen my enjoyment of the other movies? Everything I have seen and read about his version sounds really cool :)

Thunderball is one of those movies that required multiple viewings to grow on me. I used to really not like it but now it's in my top 10. It's certainly not a FRWL or GF though!

YOLT is where it really became a bit of a parody. It's still a good flick though.

OHMSS is truly an awesome movie, as is Casino Royale!

Seeing DC in the role, IMHO, will make you role your eyes a bit more at Brosnan and Moore but have a greater appreciation for some of the other Bonds, Dalton in particular. In the end though he's great and as long as you take a step back and appreciate the campier films for what they are it shouldn't hurt the experience for you.

If I posted about this earlier I apologize for the redundancy. I just got done watching Goldfinger again and decided to finally come clean with my standing towards it. Again, my standing, my problems and my opinion.

I don't see Goldfinger as a great Bond movie. It's certainly an ok movie, but there's just something about it that leaves me scratching me head. That's not to dismiss the film's legendary status when it comes to giving the Bond franchise it's iconic elements. Goldfinger is a very important film over all, I just don't consider it a good one.

For starters, there's a lot of stuff in this movie that doesn't make any sense. The opening shot with Bond using a fake bird contraption on his head is pretty goofy since he'd be less noticeable if he didn't have it on at all. And did he just jump over that big wall? I've tried climbing walls with rope before and trust me, you can't catapult up and over the top like that. And who was that guy who tried to kill Bond when he went to see that dancer? I know Bond's job is dangerous, but this just felt like it was danger for danger's sake.

And like Skyfall, Bond seems to suck at his job. Throughout the course of the film, he gets caught/knocked out by the bad guys a total of five times, and most of the things he does in order to stop the bad guys pretty much fails. The only thing that seemed to work is when Bond forced himself on miss Galore, because women are easy to convert to a man's way of thinking with sex. I am SO GLAD Thunderball gave us Fiona, a Bond Girl who not only didn't convert to his side after having sex, but actually mocked him for thinking that it would work.

Did I mention this film has some lousy exposition and padding moments? I honestly don't know why Goldfinger had to explain his entire plan to a bunch of guys he was planning on killing regardless if they said yes or no. And why take the one guy who wanted nothing to do with this plan, put him in a very nice Lincoln Car with gold bars, shoot him, and put them into a crusher? Why not just have Goldfinger tell him to wait with everyone else while he gets his payment and gas him along with the rest of them? There's efficient, and there's completely wasteful.

And in the end, why doesn't Bond ask anyone where Goldfinger was? Fort Knox was a heavily fortified area and he couldn't have escaped in his helicopter. Why was everyone celebrating this victory when the brains behind the whole assault was still at large? Shouldn't Bond have stayed for a little while to find Goldfinger before he set out to have drinks with the President?

And I barely touched on the treatment of women in this film, but I figure everyone here knows where I would go with that. I'll just end this rant by saying that Guy Hamilton got freaking lucky with this film, because his subsequent Bond films sure don't rank anywhere near the top lists of anybody's best lists.

All valid points, however this level of logic can be used to dissect almost any action film and certainly every Bond film. No matter how bad Bond appears at his job he always comes out on top ;)
My daughter has seen the 1st 4 films, and she has come to the conclusion that he wants to have sex with every woman he meets (hard to argue with her on that :lol) So far she likes SC alot more as Prof. Jones or Ramirez

In the end the old film making adage is that you should never let logic get in the way of a good film. :)

Yes, your points are all valid Jeyl. Fact of the matter is that if Bond did everything right it would be boring. If the villain did everything right it would be boring. And on and on. :)

The laser table scene in itself is worth the price of admission.

For some fun here's a tag we did on one of our shows when Skyfall came out:

:thumbsup :) ...and that video is great, The BTTF one though, :lol:lol:lol

Watch the move again. The decoy bird is a snorkel.

I just wrote some about GF's PTS, but Chrome lost my text loading cloud print nonsense. Maybe tomorrow.

I am not in for GF too! To me the best thing about GF is just the DB5.
Jeyl brought a valid argument there.
Thunderball on the other hand, got a bit of impact on me, but that's just personal sentimental experience.
After rewatching TB again, I had to admit, it is not as good as I first saw it, but again, it's a classic movie.

On separate topic,
I mentioned before Maud Adams appeared twice in different role, but the guy that play Blofeld appeared twice? Really????? Did they really sort on people?

CD=DC=Daniel Craig? Did I miss something?

Film is a much smaller business than you think. ;)

There are LOADS of repeat actors throughout the Bond films.

CD=DC=Daniel Craig? Did I miss something?

Typo. Ya, it should be DC, Daniel Craig. ;)

Not going to get into it but you guys are nuts! :lol

I have two :lol:lol, Bond has only one :lol

No, but seriously:
Avro Vulcan (delta wing aeroplane)
Underwater landing strip
Propeller scuba pack
jet foil boat hidden in a big cruiser
one-eyed villain
Homing device shark killing machine
Jet pack
emergency breathing apparatus
Those are ahead of time (except vulcan)

compare to
duck snorkle
sexy women pilot (which is not to my taste)
laser (okay you win on this one)
DB5 (okay one more shot, but TB had DB5 too)
metal trim hat (which it might be good if it is a boomerang)
chubby and grumpy vilain

Let's see if I burst into flame seconds after I hit submit button.

Anyone else smell smoke? :lol

People have their preferences, I can respect that. I'll never understand it but I respect it. ;)

I am not a big fan of Goldfinger either. Its not a bad movie, but in my opinion it is way down the list of best Bond movies. I just dont like the "playing dead" ending, and how Bond doesn't really do anything the entire movie other than being Goldfinger's prisoner.

My favorite Bond movies are Skyfall, OHMSS, Casino Royale, and From Russia With Love.

I also really like Never Say Never Again. I consider it a Bond movie, even though some dont.

The only two I really DIDNT like were Moonraker and YOLT.

Same thing applies if everyone did everything wrong, which Goldfinger has a lot of. It's not a bad Bond movie, I just don't look at it as one of the best Bond movies.
