PropShop announces TFA Props!

Watched the vid... looks nice... looks like a lightsaber...

But the 1000 dollar box and medallion it comes with... Couldn't care less... and since that's what you're really paying for, meh.

can't agree more buddy, you can get a nice vintage one on eBay, and a complete kit from Roy cheaper then buying this prop shop one

At these prices, I'd venture a guess that lot of fans are willing to go for some inaccuracies so long as the product is obtainable. I mean, which sounds more appealing? A Kylo Ren helmet that's ready to wear for only $300 at Anavos, or one that is not meant to be worn for $2,000? What ever inaccuracies Anavos' version may have, at least they're confident in their product enough to say that you can wear the bloody thing.

they most likely say you can't wear it because they don't have a costume license, but a prop replica license I reckon. It'll still be wearable, I bet.

maybe they have made it unwareable? I've seen this done in the past, where they put a bar across the opening, so you can't get it over your head?

3D printed is what is dead accurate to TFA, though. Apart from Han's blaster, Rey's blaster, and the Graflex, nearly every other major prop and even some armor was 3D printed. All trooper blasters, burnt Vader, the C-3PO suit, helmets, Phasma's armor, you name it. That's just how they were made.

I'd imagine the description on the sale site about the Graflex saber being 3d printed is just an error due to them copy pasting the same marketing blurb on each listing. Presumably they'll be doing some metal flash replicas.

Edit: Price is a separate issue but accuracy is not really in question here for the most part. Not yet at least, apart from the Graflex.

I know that exactly. I don't want resin or plastic props. I want a replica of what that item in universe would feel like, like the original movies. I don't care that they are 100% accurate. I'm just saying that, accurate or not, they're way overcharging when MR props were made out of metal and a fraction of the cost. I guess they think the accuracy warrants that money. I actually don't care, I'm just arguing the point because I don't want any of the TFA stuff. :)

Saw the Graflex. :eek

Saw that they [may be] printed. :unsure

Saw the price. :wacko

Gonna stick to my plan of getting the upcoming kit ala Roman.

I think this is a bad trend, and will affect the prop collectors in the long run if they are successful. Let me explain by using the 1/6 scale figure market. Before Hot Toys come along, 1/6 scale figures are pretty cheap and usually goes under $100 for good quality figure, but ever since Hot Toys comes along, and put out high price figures, now the 1/6 scale figures in general are going about $300 or more. Yes, they are high quality figures, but because of the asking prices from them, now all 1/6 scales figure command such prices. Just my 2cents into the trend of collecting props if this is what holds in the future.

After shipping, duty, and tax, the $1250 Rey lightsaber ends up being over $1500. Yeah, no thanks. I'd rather get a replica Graflex and convert it, then build a nice presentation box for it. Shouldn't cost anywhere near that price. The COA, medallion, and RFID chip just don't justify the expense for me. The provenance doesn't enhance it any for me either.

That Melted Vader Mask is $3,500? You'd think at that price it would come with JJ Abrams' signature, or something like that. [...] From the looks of it they're not even including an acrylic enclosure which would be essential for a replica like this since dusting this sucker would be a hassle.

Just store it amidst the ashes of your enemies. No dusting required.

Don't forget that this is a prop making company which is actively working on films. It isn't a replica company. They are just offering to sell additional copies of certain props they made for films they worked on.

I don't think they intend to spend a large chunk of their time making and selling these.

Agreed. These replicas are pretty expensive but I think a big part of the price is paying for the pedigree. These definitely aren't for everyone but they are being made available for those with deep pockets that want high end TFA prop replicas from those that made the screen-used originals.

Anybody done the finance due diligence on this... it all stems from the historic AA lawsuit (please do not derail this thread) BUT the result was that England is now legally the Hong Kong of propforgery. Industrial design VS work of art.... why are they produced in England, With HUGE shipping and import duties to the USA. and possibly not available in other countries????? its a frakin digital file. ......

(I'm not the target audience, and I don't normally get involved in this sort of discussion... but it's Friday, so...)

I really don't see the difference between being a "replica company" and selling "additional copies" in this case.

It's not like they discovered that there were 3 extra blasters left on the paint rack, and have decided to eBay them. Instead, this is a case of mass-production of high-end consumer items, none of which were ever destined for use in an actual film. So, to me, yeah, they are definitely replicas.

To me, these props seem excessively over-priced. But my response is twofold, and probably contradictory:

1) Horses for courses. People can buy whatever they damned well want. It's their money, not mine.

2) A fool and his money are soon parted.

An aside: the part of me that is allergic to marketing superficiality and fakery must protest at the alleged shop environment with all the dark lighting and red bars. Yes, obviously it's just like that for the video shoot. But it'd be nice if they showed the _real_ process behind these things, instead of some fantasy version. The version where there is dust in the hair, moulds everywhere, and actual shop lighting.

I watched the Nerdist's unboxing video on facebook - the whole kit for Rey's (and I'd assume Kylo's) hilts are cool, but I'd just as soon get Roman's replica if I wanted a static hilt (and may do so in the future anyway). The stand is pretty nice looking, and the medallion looks good... but as a whole I'm unimpressed. If this sat in the $500 range I think it would do really well, but at probably 3x that for most buyers, no way.

Cool, he mentions in the video that he has the Black Series version as well, and it turns out to be very accurate in comparison to the PropShop original. Good to know! Love the velcro-in prescription lenses he worked up too, hehe.

Edit: The video also confirmed that the Kylo Ren helmet replica is a finished 3d print as with the Vader.

LOL yeah I love Adam and l love his videos but I never have understood why all the celebrities get free items when they have way a lot more disposable income than the average collector it would take me months to pay off the propshop helmet. LOL It is interesting that the black series is similar and WAY cheaper.

The reality of the situation is that it takes one dedicated person to invest in one of these pieces, mark my words, the kylo Ren and trooper helmet, and is going to be on ebay shelling out recasts like no one's business.

Not a matter of "if," just who's gonna be the first to get theirs in to do it
