Presenting my latest adition! RED-2

This got to be my slowest project ever. Not becuase it was especially difficult to build or paint but due to being started right before my move to a bigger place. Then it had to wait on a shelf during the renovation of our new appartment.

Well it's finally ready for display. Good Ol' Capten Cardboard studio scale kit with lots of mods made by me (including a studio accurate pilot). A big thanks must go out to Lee who shared he's painting tricks for me. This one was done with his "trade mark" gloss white car paint/steel wool rub down technique. I was sceptical at first but I have to say that he's technique really paid off. It really gave the entire model the same feel the originals had. As always the goal was to make something as true to the real model as possible without taking any "artistic freedom". Staying true to the real deal so to speak.

A big thanks also has to go out to my girlfriend who helpt me light the pics, our goal was to capture the same look as those wonderful ILM "black backdrop" pics seen back in the days.

I hope you like the final result, thanks for looking.

Cheers,

Steve.

Stunning work Steve. Worthy of a job at ILM back in the day without a doubt.

Many thanks for sharing such a beautiful model.
You are a true artist.

Howard.

Beautiful Steve - as always.

But, wait. - I thought you were sticking strictly to ESB props these days. ;) :lol

Just kidding bro - congrats on another gorgeous addition to your collection,

-Chris

Yeah...it looks okay.
Not NEARLY as good as my Kenner X-wing repaint that I did when I was 12 back in '79, but not bad.

:lol

Man, every time I see one of these X-Wings it makes me all sad and wistful that I didn't get one. . . *sigh*

Fantastic work.

thanks guys. Glad you like it.

Jedipunk, yeah you're right I'm strictly going ESB these days but I figured there's some X-wings in that flick too. Sure, they all have the wings folded together but what the heck. I have no idea if the Red-2 model was used though (I know Red-3 was) but I picked it anyway just because I'm such a big Wedge fan. :)

Oldken, It's probably the pic that gives that illusion, he's actually holding on to the dash board. One hand is slightly raised though, and yes, the original pilot was posed that way. I agree, it looks kind of silly but then again I tried to stay true to the original model so what to do.? :lol

Thanks again,

Steve.

Thats one gorgeous Xwing Steve, the paint just yells studio replica, a joy to behold buddy.......lee
Its funny, all i want now are ESB props. :thumbsup

Steve, sooo glad it worked out for you the model looks fantastic. I appreciate the plug too. Some parts are easier said than done but it looks to me like you nailed it.. Also, I love your pilot too I just built one for mine and kind of glad to see the original touch it adds to it.

All the best.

Lee

Great work. Inspiring. I'm tackling one right now, so this post is much appreciated.
What kind of mods did you do? and can you share the details of the kinds of paint and elaborate on this steel wool method?

I am simply speechless...

This is clearly the best finish I've seen on a studio scale X-Wing.

This is the tyupe of work that is both inspiring and intimidating.

To apply a Home Theater adjective -- "REFERENCE QUALITY".

Awesome work, Steve. I have a CC kit that I want to build someday, but after seeing yours I don't think I'll ever be able to do it justice. Thanks for sharing.

Mike
