Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as a Predator

GREAT build. I'm always amazed at what people can make from sheets of foam! :thumbsup

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as a Predator

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as a Predator

Wish i'd seen this 2 weeks before i started making stuff for my iron Predator. I'm nearly done but i may use your pictures of the wrist panel for reference. Your work is incredible, so clean and neat. Your daughter must be ecstatic with that.

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as a Predator

Again, the BEST DAD OF THE YEAR goes to.... (drum roll!)

Indiefilmgeek :thumbsup

Absolutely fantastic work my friend... you make ordinary things "EXTRA-ORDINARY"...

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as a Predator

I like the way you create this!!! Cool works

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as a Predator

I'm overwhelmed by all the kind words and comments! You guys (and gals) are all SO talented... it's just a thrill for me to be able to share with you my projects! :$

I should probably post the rest of the build....

Let's start with two quick pieces: shoulder bells and bicep armor

For the shoulder bells, I just cut out template pieces and then glued them together so they curved into the correct shape.

Then these were painted and weathered before I attached them to the chest armor (as described on the first page).

For the upper arm armor, I wanted to get a sharper corner look. So, after I cut the template pieces out, I used my dremel with a stone bit and 'scored' the back side of each piece where I wanted it to sharply bend.

I then applied hot glue along the 'scored' groove and bent the piece - holding it until the glue dried and held the shape of the sharp angle. I did this for all of the pieces for both arms and them glued them together.

Here is the good shot of the score lines and the finished shape...

Then these got plasti-dipped, hit with adhesive promoter and painted with the hammered steel paint.

Then I weathered them and glued two bands of black elastic straps to them so they will stay in place.

Next up is the Belt...

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as a Predator

This is too good to be foam. This is like a cooking show where they assemble everything and pull it out of the oven done and delicious looking. I want this man tested for use of illegal substances that enhance performance!

THE BELT

This actually started as a Goodwill purchase. It's a nice Michael Kors belt... well, it WAS nice... I immediately cut it down to size and drilled two holes in the flat buckle. :lol

I then took some generic brown Hobby Lobby craft foam (2mm) and sliced it into 2" strips.

I then glued the strips (at different lengths) to the belt in a sorta overlapping way...

I then created the groin flap. Again 3mm white craft foam and green 2mm craft foam.

Same with the butt flap...
8060910284_3b65b749ee.jpg

I masked off the top parts (which should look more like leather) and then hit them both with a quick coat of plasti-dip, adhesive promoter and the hammered steel paint.

Then the top parts got hit with a brown textured paint...

And finally some weathering.

The side panels were next. These were a bit more complicated (template-wise). I decided to start off with the backing piece split in half and glued back together at an angle. This should give these panels some more shape.

Again, I'm using 12" x 18" 3mm and 2mm craft foam from the Hobby store...

Here is an out of focus shot of one piece with the angle completed and the other one ready to glue.

The scale pieces cover the seam well... so it looks pretty good (even with pink highlights).

Done and ready for painting process...

Plasti-dip, adhesive promoter and hammered steel paint.

I also did up a belt buckle piece and painted it...

And this is what the weathered versions of these looked like on the belt (with blackwashed foam strips done).

To add some detail, I took two bubble gum containers I had and added some foam and stuff.

My favorite time of the year, because I get to see what incredible costumes you make. Thanks for sharing.

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as Predator 10-24 upda

Now I have to admit that I used a 'life-line' on the undersuit... :unsure

I don't own an air-brush (and suck at it anyway). So, I friend of mine agreed to bail me out and air-brush the basic white underarmor shirt and white leggings I bought from wal-mart.

Here's the shirt we bought...

And here is the amazing job my friend did on short notice!

For the netting that goes over this, I bought a fishing net (for her torso) and two sets of $4 halloween fishnet stockings (one for her arms and one set for her legs).

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as Predator 10-24 upda

Wow, dude it's very good and ingenious.

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as Predator 10-24 upda

Looks amazing dude! Did you use Wandy Foam?

I LOVE Caroline over at Wandy Foam and all of my 'serious' builds are 100% her foam. But for this build, I was under a time crunch and I just picked up a bunch of the foam for this build at Hobby Lobby.

The exceptions to this are the Helmet and anything over 3mm (like parts of the wrist armor) are from Wandy Foam on this build.

NOTE: You can usually tell what's Wandy Foam on my builds cause I ALWAYS order grey colored foam from Caroline. Any OTHER colored foam is just Hobby Store foam.

For anyone interested in trying out foam building, I HIGHLY recommend Wandy Foam. It's the smoothest, easiest to work with stuff you'll find! :love:thumbsup

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as Predator 10-24 upda

I just bought 30 sheets of the 6mm in Tan from her haha. I ordered it on the 17th and it got from New Jersey to Detroit by that Saturday on the 20th. I ordered some LEDs from a dude on eBay 45 minutes from my house and didn't get them until yesterday and I ordered those on the 16th. So she has amazingly fast shipping. I hope 30 sheets is enough to do my Iron Man build XD

Re: IndieFilmGeek 2012 Halloween Costume Contest - My Daughter as Predator 10-24 upda

Good Lord this is a winner! :thumbsup
