Playmates First Contact Phaser

Hey guys, I wanted to share a project that has taken me close to a year to complete: my rework of a Playmates First Contact phaser. It's one of the first props I started after discovering the forum, so it means a lot to me to share it here. I surely could not have completed it without all the great info found on the RPF.

My goal - which seemed like a simple one before I began - was to make the toy as much like Capt. Picard's phaser seen in Star Trek: First Contact as I could. Of course, this turned out to be far more involved than I imagined at the time. I had already done a lot of hole filling when I decided the seams on the sides had to go, so I cut a new door in the bottom with my Dremel. My cutting skills weren't so great, but through the use of generous amounts of Squadron Green, the door turned out pretty good. I had the most difficulty with the painting. The paint pealed up where it was masked off and I had to sand and repaint several times. The whole project was frustrating, took way too long, and in the end was extremely rewarding!

That's beautifully done, and the finish is flawless! I had one of these back in the day. Ahh, the memories...

Ditto on the paint work. I think this looks better than my MR version.

airbrush or rattle?

Fantastic! You've done some amazing work on that. I've often considered trying that with mine.:cool

I have a question for those that have an accurate First Contact phaser. On the Playmates version I noticed that the black emitter seems to be pointing upward instead of straight ahead. Which to me would make aiming it very uncomfortable on the wrist because you would have to have the front of the phaser body tilted down to shoot straight. I find it most noticeable when having your arm straight out. The Nem phasers don't have that issue. Is that aspect of the Playmates version correct?
