Pee-Wee's Big Adventure Bike

On my CMC wheels its got a Suntour front hub and a shimano coaster in the rear, the rear has three little indented bands in it. Its a single speed. You used to be able to get NOS ones on ebay. Its the same as what is on the bike at the Hollywood Museum.

You can also have a New Departure model D on a CMC rim, I think I have seen it both ways. In some case I thing they just used the ND arm as the brake arm and kept whatever hub can with the wheels.

Make sure to double check the spoke/hole count if your are buying a hub on ebay, sometimes it is not listed. You most likely are getting 36 hole if you got the correct rims. The used to be a seller on there that would sell you the spokes for a good price also.

I cleaned up and did a quick and dirty paint job on an upper saddlebag. Still waiting on more red acrylic sheet for the fin, should be here today though. A couple things about this, this is actually a reject casting, but I cleaned it up with some bondo and it looks pretty good. The hinge is recessed, I don't like the sticking out of the top look, and it has magnets at the other end to hold it closed. The tail light is attached with a wood screw through the center and has a circle of chrome tape under it. I thought that might make it look a little better, not sure if it does though. The base is plywood and is attached with small wood screws at the front back and sides. It could be better, but I wanted to clean one up quick and see how it looked.

Here are the side bags I've done so far. The openings are cut out and the hinges are just like the movie chain scene, except that I used rivets instead of nuts/bolts.

And lastly, I decided the side bags weren't symmetrical enough in the rib section, so guess what, I'm redoing it and remolding it. It's more money, but I want it to look right.

That center tank looks great! I can't wait to see how the bags turn out.

Can you take a pic of how you did the hinges? It's been kind of the bane of this whole project for me.

It's really easy. First I marked where the hinges would go before I cut out the openings by making pencil marks through the bolt holes. Then I drilled out the holes. After I cut out the doors with a dremel and a cut off wheel I marked where the hinge part needed to be notched on both the door flap and the saddlebag. This way only the hinge portion shows from the top. I also chamfered the meeting edge of the flap and the bag so it could open easier without hitting itself. You'll have a small gap, not bad though. I plan to solve this by putting a small strip of something under it glued to the bag, and painted red.

One hinge seems like it would be a little wobbly. How is it for you? I wanted to use the same type of hinges as the movie bike, so that's why I did mine this way. What is the name of the type of hinge you used?

It's wobbly when it's open but when it's closed and latched it's fine. I honestly forget where I got it but it's a concealed hinge. I'll see if I can't dig up some info on it.

So the screen used bike had the screw heads or robots poking through?

That I'm not sure of. In the chain scene when he opens the bag you can clearly see two 1" hinges with a bolt and a nut on the inside. If they recessed the top of the screw and hid it under putty and paint I have no way of knowing, but I doubt it. The way everything else on the bike is slapped together I bet you can see the bolt heads from the top. The hollywood bike has non-functional saddlebags, so it's not a good reference for this.

Yeah...neither of the two other bikes I've seen had functioning bags either. It's hard telling from screen caps too because the bike looks so much better on screen than it ever did in real life. I figure I'll just stick with mine because honestly I'll probably never open it except to take the chain out of it at bike shows.

Oh man, I'm gonna be using mine all the time. I've put 100's of miles on this bike already, and the whole time I've been wishing I had saddlebags to hold stuff in.

I can't wait to ride my bike. Hopefully by Wednesday it will be ready to take out. I've been holding off riding it until everything that needed to be put on was mounted, so I didn't have to take apart the bike too many times.

Great job on the bags Ryan, i love that you used rivets, please post a report on how they hold up over time. Two hinges was a pain to get set right without binding funny.

I found a mint front cmc wheel yesterday but it has a kk hub? The kk is stamped along with a crown, looks nice but not sure if it was the hub the wheel came with.
