P2 Closed Mouth Build. Raw Latex 1St Pull P24 24/11/11

Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce you to Captain Humble...

Damn it, Lee, take some credit for your God-given talents. Simply mimicking other people's work is not what you do, nor is THAT even a simple task would that be the case. Hell, if was so easy to just sit and look at pictures and take advice to come up with your finished sculpts, we'd all be running around with home-made P2s that look straight off the set or would have poured our own P1 redos (That no one else gets to have) and hugging them and snuggling them at night. Sure, there are some awesome artists on this site and yes some of them are better than you, but this constantly downplaying of your own true skill set is just BOGUS!

Oh, I can't wait to see this thing start up this weekend! **** Jersey Shore and all the crap my wife watches, this is reality, BITCHES!

I am not playing down anything, people are too lazy to sit ,and study, and try IMO!

And you can bitch about the P1 all you want, I think I have shared more than my fair share of work on here. :)

Not bitching; just poking you, buddy. :) Totally understand your point and how it's cool to have something that is yours and no one elses. Didn't mean to offend you...

I'm not offended, hense the smilie :)

I honestly believe more people can do great sculpts, they just need a push in the right direction, and to be stubborn .

If the journey wins, I will try to go into detail as much as I can, and explain what I personally do, obviously there are other ways and techniques, but at least people see how sloppy my masks start off hehe.

I would like to thank you Lee for even giving us the choice. And taking the time to share one of your creations with us.Everything you share with this board has been insightful and inspirational .Hopefully we see a Journey and watch how a Pred truly comes to life .
Cheers
Rhonda

I say Journey, always learn something from your sculpts. :)
Hopefully i will be sculpting soon too :)

journey def lee,i myself an amature sculpter would like this set up!ps if someone could put up what exactly the sculpting tools do would be great!

You are obviously really good at sculpting Predator masks. There doesn't really seem to be any dispute about that. I think you should do what ever the hell you want. What ever is easier and convenient for you to sculpt a mask and still live your life. Your work is awesome and I think no matter what you decide to do on an internet thread, people will still check it out and give you props and criticism. So I say you do what ever is the best for you man

That was not the reason i posted but thanks.

I have to go out this morning, but then i will make a start this afternoon. ( 1st day off yay me ) I will 1st show the armature and tools. then start blocking.

I hope this is of some help to someone, ( along with me getting help from you )

Well heres the start. Basically this is EVERYTHING i use, except my main tool ( fingers )

The Head is a rubber/plasticy foam filled mannequin head from ebay, i have 2 of these but the other is resin and alot heavier, so i prefer this one as the heads are heavy enough as it is. ( he is in the festive mood )

as you can see i cut off the nose and ears, then fibreglassed over the holes i do this so it makes it easier for me to dig the head out of the mould after it has been moulded.
The turn table was £4 i think from one of those discount stores ( where they sell crap tools and basically cheap end stuff ) called TJ's, its real purpose was a pc monitor stand with trays for pens etc, but it serves a purpose here, sure it groans and complains alittle when the sculpt starts gainign some weight, but otherwise its real handy to swivel around to work on different parts of the sculpt when i get bored working in the one place etc.

Tools. on the left we have lighter refill, which fills my little blue butane burner. ( have to be careful with this or the clay can literally melt off. ) Under that are a set of wooden calipers, 1st time i have used these on a sculpt, so should help save me staring at the sculpt wondering if it is close to symetrical etc.

on the right there is a small jar of white spirits with brush, i use this sometimes with the butane burner to quickly smooth down sections ( often leave those sections for a few hrs then for them to harden up again )
Then we have a set of those chrome dentist tools you see on ebay, mixed with some random wooden ones, some i made some i got off ebay. also a big spoon there ( not sure why, but i definately have used it before )
Also the most powerful sculpting tool in the known universe, a MAGNUM ice cream stick ( ok poor joke but whatever )

Underneath are a mix of homemade and a few bought loop tools. and a penknife for cutting up blocks of clay to smaller peices, as chavant is nowhere near soft even in the soft variety. thats it apart from my fingers.

Then there is a bag of clay from the bubba sculpt, you can see sections of his neck and a dreadhole section from the back of the head, i will use these straight away on the head to help block out big areas, the rest is just slithers of clay i dug out, that look like big worms usually. also have 2 blocks of clay that were not used on the bubba mask, i have another bag with approx 2 -3rds the amount of this , again from the bubba scultp.
I think in total there are 19 x 2lb blocks, i expect to use maybe 18 blocks roughly on this, but i will weigh it at the end of the scultp as i am curious myself.

anyway thats how i start, i should have a hour or 2 later to start putting some clay on him, this time i will be starting with the neck and ill post a pic when later if i can.

hope ive made sense
Lee.

Question Sir. Does the lighter fluid or the white spirits effect the clay in any way? I guess what I mean is there any type of reaction from the clay from putting the fluid on the clay?

Look forward to seeing your sculpt, a journey thread is always something to look forward to with noob sculptors like myself...

The lighter fluid ONLY fills my burner , the burner makes it VERY VERY soft, and if used too much will melt the clay off as it will get so hot it will turn to liquid.

The white spirits, turns the clay into a mushy mess, so again you need to be careful, i hope now i am using soft chavant, i will hardly need to use it, but when i did use it with chavant medium, i often had to leave the sculpt overnight to harden up again if i used too much, and to be honest, even then it will still softer than the rest for a day or so more, depending if i had used to much.

Again i am sure there are other or better ways, but until i get told about them, this is how i do it hehe.

Thank you so much for starting this tutorial from the basics.I'm going to pay close attention and hope to pick up a few tips and tricks from you Lee.
This is going to be an exciting build thread more than most I think ,cuz I've never seen a P2 closed mouth mask yet.
And if theres any out there I haven't seen them.
Thanks Lee

no preassure the lol

I am going to be taking SOME eference from my open mouth P2 to begin, its easier than looking at pictures. then i can correct the mistakes i made on the open mouth, and ten try to get the bloody P2 head shape correct , well at least make it lean more towards the hero shape.

obvioulsy need alot of help along the way :)

i have a lot of Soft NSP and it is not much different from the Med. (my local guy ordered the wrong stuff)
you notice the difference most in blocking. but, you will still need the spirits for fine smoothing.

EDIT: i made the sculpting tools thread for people to post their different stuff they use.

ps you armature is very sad you cut off his nose.
