P-51D Mustang

Wow, that's beautful, Gig! :thumbsup :thumbsup

What years did the P51 fly in combat?

And what were the planes Affleck and Hartnett flew during the dogfights with the Zeros, in Pearl Harbor? Were they P38s? Were they also called Mustangs?

The Wook

Mustangs even flew into the Korean war as F-51s.

And check this........

"Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic (FAD) was the largest Latin American air force to employ the F-51D with 44 acquired in 1948.[clarify] It was the last nation to have the F-51 Mustang in service, with some remaining in use as late as 1984."

I actually just read this not more than a week ago and was completely blown away:eek. Imagine a P-51 "engaging" an F-15 in the '80s. The US pilot would think he was in some time warp for a split second. Right out of the Twilight Zone.

More impressive is how they kept them maintained for so long. I'd love to hear more on that.

When you guys first mentioned the F-51, I was thinking to myself "how did they fly combat missions with a photo recon bird?". Then I remembered the photo recon bird was the F-6 variant (a refit P-51C/D) :lol.

Funny how the mind goes when there's all sorts of junk up in there...
