Suppositions and statements of "fact" should always be backed up with some form of proof.
Without proof, there is no reason for discourse. Statements will only be taken at face value and can be easily dismissed by personal bias, other proof-less statements, ect...
There are a multitude of valid reasons that can prevent one from revealing their sources. In that case, one should refrain from participating in the debate for the reasons outlined above.
If everyone followed this rule then no one would be talking.
Saying someone else told you so is not fact, it's heresay.
