Opinions on Wizard of Oz remake

I would personally love to see a proper adaptation of the book - The film is a classic in its own right, but it and should be seen as a separate entity to the book(s).

Return To Oz tanked in the climate in which it was released - But with the subsequent successes of Tim Burton/Neil Gaiman/Del Toro style media and the popularity of the "alt. scene" ( Whatever misnomer you want to give it... Emo / Goth / whatever ) I reckon a proper adaptation would do well.

I still cant believe they are remaking "True Grit".

Holy crap! Really?

Like what DS was saying about OZ, True Grit only uses a portion of the book. There's a lot more after Cogburn saves Mattie. There's a section of her grown up after her arm is amputated because of the snake bites. She's a spinster and it's heavily implied that she never married because she's been in love with Cogburn since he saved her. It's a good read.

Although no one could play Rooster like Wayne, and he's really playing the character as it's presented in the novel, Kim Darby and, YIKES, especially Glan Campbell are terribly miscast.

I wasnt aware that they were making a remake of Wizard of Oz per say but I know there is a few films being made about Oz

Dorothy of Oz
Oz: Return to the Emerald City
The Witches of Oz (this one looks interesting)
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

and of course
Wicked

However a remake of the classic would be awful. What would be next, Casablanca?

This is what it would turn into...

"The Wrath of Dorothy" with Angelina Jolie coming summer 2013!

The real problem with adaptation these days is that filmmakers think they are all fantastic artsy creative types and must **** in the soup before they like it.

Until a few years ago people were doing fairly straight adaptations with a few changes for cinematographic reasons. These days they betterify everything even if it's a timeless classic that has influenced generations. Most adaptations nudge you in the ribs, winking a lot with a big phoney smile going "We really improved Shakespeare this time, huh ?"

Burton dropped the ball on Alice. He waded in with a truckload of what he believed was drama and depth ... Hello, reality to mr Burton ??? The point of Alice in Wonderland was to tell a little girl not to mind all the people acting weird because they are people without depth ???

I'll stick to the books and the movie and wait till all this crap blows over and people get their senses again and do justice to the original story as intended instead of choking it to death with their arrogant, talentless hackjobs.

Name one. Up until recently there were very few adaptions that stayed close to the books.

Heck... even Wizard of Oz isn't like the book... so...

I think he did great for a continuation of the original stories - Alice returning to wonderland.

And what reality and point are you talking about?

No, it shouldn't be remade.

Hollywood is awash with the capsized scum of remake failiure, let's not willingly agree to letting "them" add to that ever-growing pile of cinematic sewage.

They might make a few bucks, but how will we as an audience actually benefit? Artistically? How will cinema benefit, progressively?

The book is the book, the old classic film is the film, let that be an end to it.

I'm still naive enough to believe that risks should be taken on new ideas and franchises, rather than taking up the safe, uninspired and corporate perspective of rehashing what they think will sell.

I know cinema is a business, like any other, but dammit I wan't to see intergrity and heart in stuff. Not just saleable product.

Since there are many Oz stories to start with, I don't understand the need to try and remake it. Just write a good story for the world and make that.

Thats very true. One thing I loved about Wicked was that it was inspired by the Oz books, but it created a WHOLE new look.

Not sure who would agree, but being Oz is the ultimate fave in my mind, Wicked quickly gained a top spot.

Burton has decided to waste more time and resources by pooping in Chaz Addam's pond, for his next film...

So I'm sure we can all "look forward" to Depp as Gomez and Mrs. Tim Burton as Morticia. Snore.

As far as Oz, I really don't want to see a remake. It'd be in 3D, it'd have gratuitous/overuse of CGI for the flying monkeys, and they'd cast lots of well-known actors that I'm tired of seeing.

The thing is that, not only was the 1939 Wizard of Oz a remake as well, but it was also a Hollywood stylized version of the book. The only difference between that remake and the remakes today is that they had sensible people working on films in those days. People who were in touch with what makes a good film.
While that may be rare in remakes today, I still believe that it is possible to make a successful and accurate remake....If that old type of sensibility can be tapped.

I personally don't have the same animosity against remakes.
The way i see it is - If the remake doesn't look good, then I just wont see it. Problem solved.
If I do happen to see it and it sucks, it's it's not going to effect the quality of the original version of the film.

Who am I to say a remake shouldn't be made. Someone out there might like it.

I agree...Oz is great, and thanks to my wife (Who introduced me to Wicked) , I really like Wicked as well (Im actually going to see it on Saturday....For the 4th time.)

THe thing that bothers me about Wicked is some of the hardcore fans who insist on changing the canon of the original Oz books just so it conforms to Wicked.
Wicked should not be perceived as canon. Wicked should be perceived almost as a "What if" type story that was inspired by the OZ books.

Here is my version, well trailer, give me another few years to get it to this stage.. But music and feel etc is what I would do with it..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJWZjTMXTP0

Won't be a musical.. Proper Silver Slippers, not Ruby.. A real four legged lion.. Way darker than the original.. Will have a Harry Potter style to it ( The darker side of it ).. I'm currently writing a screen play for it, based on the trailer I did.. But in talks so hopefully will know more soon..

wow, you are going to see it for the fourth time? where do you live? san fran?

Wicked was amazing. I saw it twice at the pantages. By far the best musical I have seen.
I always considered it as a "what if" story. I dont want to give it away, but the ending was a big "what if".

Also, I enjoyed it because the scarecrow is my favorite character in wiz of oz..He had an important role in wicked.

I live in Miami.
THis is my fourth time over a span of about 3-4 years.
The last time I saw it, Kristen Chenowik (Pushing Daisies) played Glinda.

THe first three times I saw it was in Ft. Lauderdale (About a 30 minute drive from Miami). THis time it's in Miami.

Dorthy Of Oz, the sequel to the Wizard of Oz is almost finished...starring: Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi, Martin Short, and Kelsey Grammar ..it is animated

Pretty good work man!
Can't wait to see more.

Thanx mate.. Trying to get it closer to the novel.. Would love to use that cast too.. Which means no Johnny Depp.. :lol

Wicked witch wouldn't control the story like the Original movie.. She won't come into it til towards the end.. And yes, the Scarecrow will have a Jeepers Creepers liking.. :love Dorothy will be younger, like in my trailer, not older as the Original..
