Official AT-AT pilot rear tanks found part search

Although some efforts by people to scratch build these components have been pretty good, lets focus on trying to find the real parts used.

At one point, I thought someone had discovered something close, but I forget what the pieces were. Maybe that is a good starting point if anyone else remembers.

I originally thought some sort of aerator or filter.

The faint grooves on the main bodies made me wonder, however, if the things weren't lathed. I couldn't really tell if the undercolor was white or bare metal. I also know some folks lathe solid resin too, so it could have started out as white resin.

I lean toward it being a found part, but thought I'd point out the possibility of it being entirely fabricated.

Looks maybe like some kind of plumbing accessory? Like a reducer of some sort. Just an impression I get, particularly if that grey is the actual colour of the item and not a paintjob.

Absolutely not a plumbing part. I would look at aircraft filters or solenoids.

Right. Using plumbing couplers and pipes are fine for modifying when doing your costume; that's how I scratch-built my tanks. But for the real thing, I don't think so.

And if the tanks are a found part, chances are the thing is one unit and not slapped together.

I could certainly believe plumbing parts since I'm sure the originals were white and then painted. The type of material we use over here for plumbing doesnt take paint too kindly hence the flaking.

I've just knocked the following together. Hope it helps. These are original tanks

During a previous search for these parts Paul troopermaster showed a picture of plumbing parts that were almost identicle. It was straight pipe an end cap and couplers only bit we couldn't get exact was the couplers.

Scaling the pipe with the mohawk strip it is approx 2" outer diameter.

Sure they aren't plumbing parts :) I really think they are and I think the top cap also holds the hose with the wing nut at the bottom.

The cap can be 1.25" or 1.5"

Wow, Jez, seeing those pics makes me believe what I cobbled together is closer than I thought before.

Regardless of whether what I have is right or not, I'm very happy with them.

A long time ago, someone posted pics of their build up using found parts.
I don't remember who it was, but from what I recall it didn't look half bad.

Gino,

Could you be talking about the ones Troopermaster picked up at a plumbers yard? It was the correct sized pipe and end cap with no bolt and the hoop couplers were not exact. If it is the pics I am thinking of they are gone from the old ATAT grebblie hunt thread.

I think the cap with the bolt on it is the correct type of part. It is just finding the exact one.

Cheers Chris

Have spools been considered for the center portion? For thread, whatever...

Also, there seems to be a seam or indentation in the center, so the center cylinder might be two joined together.

Mine are made from modern plumbing parts.....not super-accurate, but they are found items.

I used this 40mm fitting...

...perhaps it was a vintage example???

There are also cap ends that fit in the coupling.
