"Obviously you're not a golfer"...X-Wing Hockey Helmet

So I bought an airbrush kit and before I do my y-wing helmet I wanted to experiment so a guy from work asked if I could do his hockey helmet like an x-wing helmet I said sure.

Gonna mess with this in photoshop. I know I can't do it exactly like an x-wing helmet, but I think I could almost get away with making this look like it's its own pilot helmet from star wars.

It looks more like a Y-wing helmet than an x-wing, but I know I can have some fun with this.

Best of luck with this dude. What about just using decals, and a ****load of clear coat?

I sort of like the approach of painting this helmet like it was found and painted for the movie as a pilot helmet. I suggested to him that it'd be cool if I could paint the face cage yellow like the visor.

But here is a quick photoshop test. Hopefully he likes it.

Any other suggestions? All help is welcome.

Looks pretty awesome to me!

I would do the crown more like the fin on the movie helmet though. Thick broad lines. :)

The photoshop paintjob looks good, go with that. Definately look more like a y-wing pilots helmet though.

Does anyone know what the v's in the circle stand for? Or the circle with lines through it or did they never explain it?

Who's helmet did you base the paint job off of? I think in one of the EU books it was mentioned that the crew chiefs had to start painting Wedge's kills onto his X-wing by the squadron. Wedge is also the only rebel pilot with two Deathstar kills. (He was there with Luke, shut up hippys!!) :D

As I recall, they had to start painting his kills in gross lots to make room. A dozen-dozen (144) each.

TxBabyHuey, they never specified what any of those are, except for the forehead markings on Red Leader's helmet that were called "Old Republic squadron markings" or some such in the old Visual Dictionary.

I was basically going with Luke's, but like I said doing this just like it would look a little weird, so I just decided to use the helmet's lines to make it work with influence from Luke's and maybe Bigg's helmet.

I hope this guy skates at Grapevine. I cannot wait to take a couple of shots at him.

Along the top ridge from front to back. :)

I believe we are talking about what is typically refered to as the "mowhawk", the area that houses the tab and mechanism to raise the visor on the base helmet. Looks like you've got the "construction" lines that start the "mohawk" just above grill hole.

MOD EDIT: Please do not post Junkyard links outside of the Junkyard.

Yep. On the hockey helmet it's called the crown (at least I've always heard it called that :lol)

The "construction" around the facemask is great, just needs the thick lines sweeping back along the top. Ie: the rest of the mohawk. :)

Yeah I don't want to add any construction to the helmet. If it cracks or something I know the whole thing would be worthless.

So I just wanted to keep it along the lines of the helmet.

I am going to do pinstriping tape, and just do the lines and such. The Circle V and Rebel emblems I will do with vinyl and a plot cutter.

I am going to try to do the base/distressed whites and grays tonight or tomorrow night so we'll see how it works out.

It's my first time airbrushing a helmet so since I might just ask him to re-imburse me for paints, otherwise its free for practice.

I bought some Floquil paints for the airbrush, I know they used those on several of the helmets and such, so I think it will be kind of cool on this. They have some nice desaturated colors.
