"Obviously you're not a golfer"...X-Wing Hockey Helmet

Yep. On the hockey helmet it's called the crown (at least I've always heard it called that :lol)

The "construction" around the facemask is great, just needs the thick lines sweeping back along the top. Ie: the rest of the mohawk. :)

I don't know hockey equipment that well, it probably is called the crown. I was meaning on the pilot helmets its refered to as the "mohawk" because its so pronounced.

I think I caused some confusion by using the word contruction. I was just refering to the yellow lines along the top of the face cage that I believe come from Lukes helmet and are located on the tab at the base of the mohawk that would slide up it on the real world helmet to raise the visor.

I understand what you mean now.

Looking at this more the way the forehead piece rounds the cheekbone I may paint that a solid color.

I am at least going to do the off white, grey's and yellowing today and then I will try to map out the rest tonight or tomorrow.

Pics to come.

I'm not going to lie...I wish I had a helmet like that, and I don't even play hockey.

I sort of like the approach of painting this helmet like it was found and painted for the movie as a pilot helmet. I suggested to him that it'd be cool if I could paint the face cage yellow like the visor.

But here is a quick photoshop test. Hopefully he likes it.

Any other suggestions? All help is welcome.

Don't freak out yet it's just a photoshop rendering.

I have airbrushed before but not a helmet. I am a pro at photoshop this was just a 10 minute render, but since I am familiar with layers I think I have all the layers properly separated in my head. We'll see what comes of that tonight. :love

Well I got a good base down. I am going to sand it a little bit before I do some color. The yellowing will be done last, and before I do the darkest shade of gray I want to make sure the color is on there first.

But for now I was messing with what layers I will need and I think this will work for the progress I am making. More Thurs and Fri.

I took a few more liberties with the rendering. But I didn't have to do the underbase in Photoshop, which means I am just doing color, then afterwash.

***Important Question***

For those that are experienced in airbrushing...

To thin out the paint a bit so it's more transparent, do I add water or paint thinner to the mix?

To make the paint more transparent try mixing it with some clear. Thinner just makes it more, thin :D

depending on the type of paint you use, some manufacturers, already make clear paints.

Tamiya acrylics, have clear colors - red, orange, blue, green and purple. They might have a few others, as well.

Yeah I am using Tamiya and Floquil acrylics. So if I got a clear yellow and mess around with mixing some other colors that would work?

Or can I use a little clear and thinner with the desaturated Floquil yellow I have?

If you want to make your own custom clear colors, I suggest going to your local grocery store, and getting a bottle of "Pledge with Future shine" (formerly known a Future Floor Wax).

And here is everything you wanted to know about Future, and more The Complete Future

It will mix with most acrylic paints (always test on scraps, first, kids :lol), and sprays without needing to be thinned. You can make every color of the rainbow, and every color in-between.

Great work on the shading! As for the new design it looks less X-Wing and more Clone Pilot to me. Still nice, but I prefer the first. :)

I use thinner to thin paints for airbrushing but have never tried to make them clear, just thinned them enough to go through the brush better. I'd be wary using tonnes of filler. Go for an actual clear paint or the floor wax. :thumbsup

What an amazing project! I love the way you designed the artwork to meet the contours of the helmet. I will watch your progress with great interest :devil

That's going to look awesome. Is it the B-wing helmet that looks a bit like the one you are doing?

When I was researching helmets, I think the b-wing had the y-wing helmet, and another. Then the a-wings had two as well.

Someone might correct me on that.

I know xwing helmets are more desirable, but there are so many out there I can't wait to see what I can do with a Y-wing.

A lot of fans cookie cutter the helmets to match a style with a craft, but if you study scenes in the briefing room and the hangar in ROTJ, you will note many instances of various helmets mixed with different flight suits. It makes more sense to believe rebels used whatever they could rather than ensuring that everyone in a squadron matched.

Well I got a little further tonight. I got round 1 of the red done. I over did it on some of the black so I need to go back over it with some grey.

Anyway more pics coming.
Still not bad for my first helmet...so far...
