Limited Run Oblivion Movie Rifle - Second Run Capped!

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

I think the longest I've waited for a replica run to start shipping was like a year and a half. It's not unheard of around here.
Sometimes quality takes time. :)

Lol, I was making a version of that and HCG got my thread removed from the forum. I was gonna make a working trigger and lights and I think they felt threatened. ::)

I can see why they would feel threatened by your version, okay the HCG version is fine the detail is good but & it's a nice item but it's just a big lump of resin with a stand & a small green LED nothing else. From the pictures I've seen of your work on this rifle anything you would have produced would have been far superior to the HCG one I have. :)

Did you ever end of making one for yourself? The HCG one looks nice but like their Korben Dallas gun, it doesn't really do much. At least that one had an ammo counter.

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

Much slower then I wanted. Casting small parts at home while I wait for shop time to open up. Its been crazy with holiday schedule, but things are moving along, just too slow. I beg for everyone's patience as I deal with family issues at home as well. Why do the holidays have to be so complicated? :)

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

Thanks for the updates - and the long daunting task of bringing this project together. The communication is good and updates are appreciated. Time is tough to squeeze out. The build pics and progress is awesome.

Just a few words of patient encouragement. GREAT JOB - thanks.

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

I don't know what urethane god I pissed off, but man, this has got to be the hardest casting job I have ever done. Not to worry, I will persevere until done, but its just one issue after another. Someone remind me after this to not do runs over 10 PCs. :)

Yes, we need an update please! Still very excited to receive the rifle!

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

UPDATE! - Ok New year, new resolutions, and for me that means to be honest and beg for mercy from the crowd.

I was trying to cast the parts at the shop I work at from time to time. But the Urethane was taking all day to cure (way longer then it was before), I thought it was the cold, so I bought a pressure pot to work at home. Unfortunately the compressor I had at home didn't have enough pressure, so I bought a larger one (technically my wife did as a Christmas gift:)), that didn't solve the curing time issues (if anything it seems to take longer). I tried warming things up, but the air from the compressor is still cold and the curing times remain at 10 to 12 hours.

I was still having air bubbles in the castings, so I tried patching with second pours, but that still takes overnight to deal with. I found a way to solve the air bubbles with injecting the urethane, but then I have to leave tubes of additional material in the mold while it pressurizes to make sure it fills completely and I'm wasting a bit of material to do this (which added up a lot over time:cry). But now I'm getting weird shrinkage pockets? I also was having the molds start to break down on me in areas, and so I removed one of the molds from the jacket to be able to peel it backwards to help it release from the castings, only to discover in horror that the mold had shrunk almost 20%!!

This was the last straw, I have no more silicone to make new molds (I actually bought additional RTV to finish the original set of molds). I have very little urethane left and I'm realizing I won't have enough to even cast 10 sets, let alone if the molds will survive the run of 25-30 I need to complete all the requests. I have already gone to the chemical company (Smooth-on) and talked to their manager, she says to talk to their main chemical guy on Monday. I am hoping he may be able to solve some of these issues, but at this point I need to buy more material and I have no more money left on this run:cry. I am already out of pocket on numerous other things (switches, screws, springs, etc) and have turned away some people who want in on this run because I'm afraid I can't deliver.

I have two choices as I see it. I cancel the run and pay everyone back (this will take months because I have to earn money and then make payments to each of you), or I finish out the run, but it will be as I can get money to buy more materials and god forbid I have to send some of you castings with problems (which I don't want to do). I'm telling you all this because I don't want to be another one of those people on the board who drags on for years lying to the members and saying their stuff is almost done. I want you all to know that I'm months away on this and I'm not sure that the parts will fit together based on the shrinkage issues!! I have been so depressed over the countless problems I haven't been able to cast anything for a month:cry:cry. Granted the holidays always take away from anyone's ability to meet deadlines, but these issues have been so disheartening to me. I really want to give everyone a good piece (don't be fooled by the way, my gun I put together has countless problems with it, but admittedly I could be a bit of a perfectionist), but I just don't know what to do to make this right.

Here are some pics of the problems I'm talking about.

I'm not even going to get into the mess I made by saying free shipping for the first ten, man what a fool I was on that one! my estimated shipping costs for US is somewhere in the range of $70.00 - $90.00 per kit, I'm scared to even see what the international rate will be. I knew I was in trouble when I got my rifle done and felt the weight, but I hadn't realized how many of you were international! Ultimately I promised something and that was a cost I was prepared to eat to make people happy. But seeing as I may have to spend almost as much (if not more) on new urethane to finish the run, as I did to start it, that may be more then I can bear.

I guess what I'm asking members is what would you like from me? I want to finish the run and give people the product I promised. But as my personal costs rise, I'm not sure how to manage all this. I feel horrible asking for more money, because I set a price and you paid it, fair and square. But it's become obvious to me I underbid this thing and future runs (if any) will have to be at a much higher price.

I do have another alternative that's not too much for me to eat cost-wise, but will be a very different piece to some wanting a rifle quickly and that is that I make castings of the rifles as one solid piece, not painted. It will have a skin of urethane with Hard foam filler inside, the weight will be very different and obviously it won't fit over existing Airsoft rifles. I admit, this is what I intended to do originally, make it a solid resin cast kit like my D9 Arc reactor gun, but when people stepped up and gave me a rifle to work on, then I started getting reference from studio sources to compare to, I let myself get overzealous and get the better of me and ended up making the gun I wanted to make all along, but for the cost of the gun I should have made based on my original price.

If you are wondering, I did ask other professional friends of mine for their help, and everyone says almost the same thing, I should have used a much more expensive material (Shin-etsu, UC-41), both in molds and in resins, but I'm married to this and I'm trying to figure out a way to solve this problem quickly and still make people happy.

In the end, that is what I really want from everyone - to be happy. I love this community and every time I make something and share it, I want everyone to be as happy with it as I am when I create this piece. But sometimes I forget the real cost of something and let my enthusiasm get the better of me and I'm sure I'm not the only one, I guess others are just better at hiding it then I am. :) So New year, new options, can you all wait for the piece I promised? Or do you want the solid rifle, your money back? or my head? I don't blame you for any anger you may have, I'm sure I deserve some of it. But help me to figure out a solution so you can all be happy. :):)

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

If it helps to just make fewer kits, I could cancel my order. The international shipping is likely to be pretty high too it seems given the price on US domestic shipping. I certainly couldn't wear an increase in the cost of the gun. I tend to have to be a bit picky as to which props I buy as my funds are limited. You always have a great rep for quality though.

A recent project by Kenney Palkow had to be cancelled on here which was sad. That unfortunately was due to people not following through when it came time to commit financially. He based it all on sufficient numbers and only half the people came good.

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

I'm in the same boat as Peter, you can cancel and refund me as well, I'm gutted this isn't working out. I also have to pick and choose what I can and can't do, plus I'm international as well, it sounds like the postage is going to be in the $100s. :-( very sad, I was looking forward to this run a lot! :-/

Re: Oblivion Movie Rifle - Taking Final Payments!

In my experience with resins, especially Smooth-on stuff, it really needs to be 75-80% throughout. The temperature makes a world of difference with this stuff! If you don't mix, pour and cure at a high enough temperature it may never set properly.

I've waited 9 months for this so far, I can wait a little longer. I'm first in line on this run and I still definitely want mine!

I have invested so much in this project already myself. I'm working on a complete Jack Harper Oblivion costume and so far I've already acquired the following:

pistol
holster
all buckles and straps including the magpul sling
boots which I'm still working on modifying
custom gloves
jacket
leatherman
goggles
locking carabiner
and probably more I can't even think of right now

The rifle will be the crown jewel of this costume!

I'm domestic shipping, so hopefully that won't be an issue. Will everything fit in a priority medium flat rate box?

I'm not as interested in a static solid piece. I'd really like the kit with all the parts because everything you have done so far looks amazing!
