Obi-Wan Kenobi ROTS Costume Tips

I did not notice that. Makes sense though since you never really get a good close look at the belt in the movie. I didn't get around to taking those pictures of the back of my belt yesterday but will do it tonight.

Thanks. I think that those details will only achieve more accuracy, but, it is not good looking do no you think? :D

I think it looks better finished, but that's just my preference. I don't think they were concerned about it for the movie since the inside was never seen.

How thick is the leather you are using for your belt? I used belt blanks from Tandy but I think they might be too thick (which makes it harder to work with). Do you have any good pictures of the original belt's thickness? Thanks.

I am working with a 6 or 7 oz leather. Approx 2.5 mm thick for the main body. The belt strap leather is 1.8 mm thick. I think this is a normal belt thickness for this kind of work. I do not know the real thickness of the original belt, but from the photo references I think that measurement is very close for the main body.

I think the used the same leather for the belt strap too. The belt closure was made from the same leather too. which is exactly what I am doing. I tried hooking up my capsules to test the right thickness. :love

I will be posting the first part of my Obi-Wan Kenobi Belt next week and you will be able to compare the leather I used with the original one. :D

I think I'm going to redo mine using thinner leather (7 - 8 oz.). The belt blanks are 10 oz which makes it harder to work with and almost impossible to put the correct "wave" pattern in the leather since it tends to crack instead.

The waved pattern that you are talking about is very light in the Obi-Wan belt. In the other hand, It is very strong in the Anakin one. Here I show you how to get that crinkled pattern:

I rolled 3 or 4 times the leather to get the Anakin pattern. One time will be enough for the Obi-Wan belt. Hope that helps.

Nice tutorial. With the thicker belt blanks I can't do that without it cracking.

I knew it :D . This is why I got this 6 or 7 oz leather. Once dyed, the leather gets strong and will resist any MR hilt hanging from the covertec clip without flap. You know what I mean.

I'm redoing the belt for Halloween so I'll give it a try. I have a large piece of 8 oz. leather that looks like it will work without cracking.

In the Celebration III pictures it looks like the belt may have beveled edges, but in the pictures from the COSI exhibit I took (see below) it doesn't look beveled. Strange.

Not so weird. I saw two different Anakin belts in exhibits. One made with the crinkled leather and another one made using plain leather. This is probably cause they built some many costumes. I think that they had a quality test failure :)

Hey Kyle,

I've made a number of replica Jedi Belts and here's a few things I've learned in my research:

> Leather is hand-dyed from natural color 5-6/6-7 oz leather (depending on scene). The visual dictionary belt is close to screen accurate but not exact as it is thicker than what was used in most scenes.
> Anakin's belt color is around a Medium Brown. Obi-Wan's color is around a British Tan.
> The belt is only dyed on the smooth top of the leather.
> The crinkle look is actually achieved from taking the flat hand-dyed leather and weathering the belt by folding it over itself length-wise repeatedly.
> The edges of the belt are beveled and not rounded.
> To prevent the leather from cracking, treat it with a coat of neatsfoot oil (front and back), let it soak in before adding any acrylic resoline to finish it, then roll the leather to achieve the weathered look.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot. I will use that one that shows the real texture of the original one.

Good news. Today My mom was finishing my pants. Tomorrow we will start with the under-tunic. I printed a lot of photo references. I will post new photos next week. Stay tuned. :D

PS: I cut patterns and used the sewing machine, this is very exciting. :$

Talking about the costume. Does anybody know the measurement for the under-tunic collar? You know what I mean. I calculated that the tunic collar is about 5cm wide, so I estimated that each of the two little collars are about 1.5 cm at the front and a 1 cm at the back of the neck. I do not know If I was clear about.

Hey, hello there. My wedding costume is done. Here I will introduce it to you in parts, cause I took some many photos during the production :)
Let's begin with the pants, the first piece of the costume I did. I took the mold from a nurse uniform pant, they don't have pockets. But you will see by the photos I posted. If you have any question do not hesitate in pm me.

Next post will be the under-tunic. Stay tuned.

Some advice for your leather belts, I would use Super Sheene, or Leather Sheene if you want a flexible finish with a shine to it. Satin Sheene if you want a low shine. Acrylic Resoline is a bit of a pain if you don't follow the directions to the t. If you put too much it will dry out and crack it's not really meant for a flex finish. I use the other three products often and have had no problems.

If you have any questions or need specs for the items please let me know and I'll e-mail them to you once I get to work. ( I work at Tandy Store in San Antonio just in case your curious)
