not a recaster, confirmed

I was informed an ebay user *might* possibly be recasting the Medal Of Yavin castings I have been putting out over the past year or so.

This is unconfirmed at the moment. I did see the medal in question, and it's no doubt one of the medals I've casted, if not, one that SDSTUDIOS put out awhile back.

I didn't initially have suspicion because he was only listing one by itself, and after I messaged asking to see if he had anymore availble for purchase, I recieved no response and just discovered that he *may* have pulled the item down. the bidding "ended," with no buyer.

I want to be wrong about this, and if I am, I sincerely apologize, but I want to be sure.

I'm not going to post the Ebay name until I am almost 100% certain this person is recasting or not

Re: Possible Recaster? Unconfirmed though..

I normally HATE recasters. I have had many, many items that I created over the years recast, so I know how it feels to spend many hours creating a pattern and then seeing re-pops of it on five different tables at a convention. To have all of your hard work stolen...

Oh, wait...

All you did was recast my re-casting. (WITH my permission, I will say for the record). You didn't really have to do anything but pour some rubber. You had asked me if you could pull some castings and I figured you just wanted a few for your friends...so I said "sure!"

THEN, came your 25 sales threads: YAVIN MEDALS IN RESIN, REJECT YAVIN MEDALS!!!!!...YAVIN MEDALS IN METAL!!!!!!!...YAVIN MEDALS FOR EVERYBODY!!!! WHEEEEE!!!!!!

I think you did ok with those. :lol

You made a butt-load of money for just remolding my casting. What do you have to complain about? I didn't even ask you to kick me back anything...not a casting, not any cash, not a single quatloo. Nuthin. Zip.

Don't worry, I am not angry, I just think the whole thing is kinda...funny. :)

I figured that it would be recast 25 times at some point. It is a perfect target. Does that make it right? Nope. But lessee...

*I* recast it...*You* re-recast it...*he/she/it* re-re-recast it.

Consider yourself lucky, swim around in your pile o' money, and let it go.

Not worth the effort, IMO...

I understand what you are saying, and I know I put out quite a few medals, but I can tell you I've lost more money then earned doing runs..

I'm truly thankful that you gave me permission to do so. I've already decided to retire the existing mold that I made, so there will no longer be any resin castings put out.

I personally hate recasters with a passion. I just learned this guy is NOT recasting, so I am happy. Yes, I recasted, but I asked your permission. Had you said no, I wouldnt have even bothered, because it's not right had I gone through without your permission.

I'd honestly be more upset about someone recasting these for profit, pumping them out and completly de-valuing the prop overall. I want to bring the value of the prop up, and that's why I am no longer selling the resin casts. I can assure you, that whatever little profit I did make was for painting and finishing medals for those who wanted me to do so.

when these runs were going on was sdstudios given credit as the pieces originator?
just curious.
On my first runs, I did. I mentioned the fact that I recieved permission from him. These first runs took place between the RPF and TDH. In the latter I did not. I have always marked them as screen cast, and never as my own.

This whole Re-caster situation is a mistery to me it seems a very grey area indeed. If someone recasts (with a recasters permission) then complains of someone else recasting.

Or am I reading the thread wrong ?

I can't see how it can be reported??? I cannot get my head around this situation.vey strange state of affairs.

Did TC get the rights to this medal from SD or does SD own the rights or does the original caster own the rights? I see and understand what SD states but the rest is beyond me.:angel

That's the thing that gets me on these types of situations. Basically Lucasfilm would own the rights. If you didn't sculpt it, then you don't have the rights, unless you pay for the rights. But if we took that idea into effect how many itmes for sale would end up not being for sale since they were recasted from original items and molds?

Thats why I FULLY 100% support our own sculpters and artisans which take the time and effort to sit and sculpt out a piece of art that resembles the idea of the item as close as possible. They are what keeps this hobby alive!

I do have to agree with SD on that this item WILL be recasted and you probably will find it on ebay:unsure It's just a matter of time.

From what I understood or believed, is that SDstudios had OWENED the original MoY mold, and that's what I thought. If it's now a recast, then I was wrong, but that's what I believed.

He said that his mold was "toast." I asked if I can re-mold the one I had got from him, and he agreed.

From what I understand, this is not the case.

I believe SD was given a casting (with a tell put in) to use as the basis for the MR medal by a private collector who owns a screen used original.

I'm pretty sure that awhile ago in one of your for sale threads, that I mentioned that what you were offering was not an unaltered from original mold casting.

Alright, well if thats the case, then I'm wrong about it. That was never explained to me before. I don't recall your post though in one of my threads

Or are they the problem with this hobby? They are the reason for making the intellectual distinction between putting the effort into stealing and just stealing the easiest way possible.

What "keeps this hobby alive" should be enthusiasts, not collectors. If you want someting that wouldn't be otherwise available, BUILD IT. If you can't or won't, suck it up and do without.

If the only thing that can keep this hobby afloat is to operate in a "grey area" (it isn't really, just within some paper thin rationalisations) regarding studio rights, you really can't complain about someone else operating in a similar grey area regarding your precious "rights".
