Following the release of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," I finally ordered the Harry Potter "Locket From the Cave" by the Noble Collection. I hope the following is helpful for anyone who might be interested in purchasing it. (Please forgive the poor lighting conditions of the pictures.)
Appearance: The locket is a nice size and has a decent weight to it. It comes with a mostly wood display case; the locket hangs from hooks on the lid and the chain hides behind the rear mirror. It appears similar to the case which comes with the Time-Turner.
The locket is looped into a single link of the metal chain and does not slide freely. The metal has a matte finish and is not very reflective. Its "gems" are plastic, not glass, but are quite hard and shimmer nicely in sunlight. On the front of the locket, there are larger sized runes written around the edges, along with "Salazar Slytherin" repeated in a circular shape in the middle. The reverse side is covered in small, indeterminable symbols/words.
Opening the locket reveals two green felt surfaces and the note from R.A.B.. On the bottom right side, there is a painted trademark, which can be scraped off with a fingernail. R.A.B.'s note is quite small and folded in an origami style. Unfortunately, they still managed to include a tiny trademark on the bottom left of it. The hinge is a simple pin system and the clasp is effective; the locket doesn't open without a little effort.
Comparison with Screen-used Piece: The locket contains a few differences from the stock images/presumably screen-used piece. For reference, here is the image from the catalog:
On the screen-used piece, a miniature chain appears attached to the outer edge of the locket, but the Noble piece has a raised simplified pattern molded on the edge. Also, note that in the stock images, it appears the metal edges bend over and secure the gems, but on the Noble locket, the gems reside in the middle without being touched/secured by the metal. Also, the closure clasp seems to be on the outside of the original, instead of the inside.
Cost/Value/Workmanship: The locket retails for $49USD (plus tax and shipping), but I purchased mine during a 25% off special. Overall, I'm very happy with it for the price I paid and probably would have been happy paying full price. My only real disappointment is with the display case. While effective in function, it is poor in design and workmanship. I would have preferred that the lid lock better into place but unfortunately it leaves gaps due to not fitting properly. Also, on my particular set, the mirrors leave gaps in the corners and there was also a bit of excess glue used on the locket's interior right panel, which seeped into the opening.
Final thoughts: Overall, it's a pretty cool set with a few differences and flaws. Aside from my issues with the display case, I do recommend the "Locket From the Cave" and believe it would be a nice addition to any HP fan's collection. I'll be interested to see how the "real" locket ends up looking when/if it is released for the next movie.
Well, that's about it for now. I also have the Horcrux ring coming to me next week; if anyone's interested, I'll add a review of it. Thanks for reading...
Edit: All photos removed due to Photobucket being garbage now.
