Re: Gundam Costume

I got something very helpful in the mail. When I finish the mannequin I might actually be able to move on. I at least can now start planning on a WAY better way now I have I good reference.

Re: Gundam Costume

And plan my body with it. She's luckily quite an easy model to make. Unlike the model next to her :lol

Re: Gundam Costume

the only thing hard about the scyth, is the wings. they are all just a rx79 with some extra parts.

Re: Gundam Costume

So, I drew the areas that would give me trouble and how to fit them around my body. This is pretty much all I can do right now, but it feels good to know how to tackle the proportions.

Re: Gundam Costume

It is all a balancing act. A human can never fit those proportions. You just have to create a good illusion.
From looking at your drawings, I think you have the idea.

The top of the legs will have to be shorter for you to fit correctly.

The wider the shoulders the smaller the head looks.
So if you use that princilpal for the skirt. The wider the skirt, the narrower the waist will look.

You have to be careful nothing gets too big.

Wear all black and the black areas could give the illusion of empty space. So you could wear the waist higher, but not too high.

If the heel of the shoe isnt working. You could fill in the space between the heel and toe with black.

Re: Gundam Costume

Yeah pretty much. I have thermal underwear in black, and a snowboarding scarf that works as some kind of mask. Its for underneath helmets, so it's ideal.

These areas will be planned carefully. That's why I'm going to need my boyfriend and lots of ducttape soon. :lol I think working on a dummy is better than to work on myself and guess proportions. If you can see it on a distance, you can see the total picture. That's important for the illusion to work. So yeah, it's less costume building now, and more preparations.

Re: Gundam Costume

ok, i am going to help you with the feet so that you dont end up killing yourself.
here are the boots that i used for my feet and you can kinda see the rubber that is on the bottom. i forgot to update with how i did the boots in the end.
what i did was sand down the foam so that the texture was off it. then i used contact cement to attach all of the rubber tread. then i used contact cement again to position the boot inside the gundam boot. finally i used screws to make sure the boot didnt move. the screws went through the rubber into the tread of the boot. make sure you get the right sized screws. this is the only good way to do gundam feet without getting stilts.
leg test
boots and feet
rubber and glue, watch from 3:08 on
mobility test
as far as ive seen, i am the only gundam made that can actually run, jump and fight.

Re: Gundam Costume

and if you increse the thigh deign past you groin you can get a much better illusion to where your waist actually is, this will however reduce mobility

Re: Gundam Costume

the whole thing is about mobility. the asians may have awesome looking gundams, but they cant move without 1-2 people helping them. mine might not look as good as theirs, but it can move without anyone. i can climb any set of stairs, walk, run, walk backwards, dance, side step, jump, kick and jump kick all on my own without any assistance.
and in 6 months of its life, its won 4 awards.

Re: Gundam Costume

I'm glad to say that I have been paid for a photography job again. Was about time this year! Last year I had around 7 jobs now just 1. Oh well, at least I've ordered plastic and I'm about to go and buy some foam.

My boyfriend is saving up ducttape and I also ordered other supplies. Not too long before I will recieve my salary too. It makes me happy!

Re: Gundam Costume

for ****** sake! i am so sick of "gundam" style. i dont even want to count how many people spammed me with that after it came out. or the emails of people asking to "borrow" my gundam head,

Re: Gundam Costume

i just asked if you were the same person. click on the messages tab on the left side. im not on your list, it may be hidden.

So I got a bunch of materials in. I decided a few weeks ago that the helmet would be more detailed than planned but went along. Finally a layer of 'bondo' is put on. This stuff is way better than what I used before. I noticed this is an actual polyester substance, while the other wasn't. It feels quite smooth. Happy times!

EDIT: I see on some pics it looks like there are gaps in it, but that's the black side of the foam. :)
And it's really dirty so I need to clean it up a bit.
