Ninth Gate Balkan Lecture Lobby Card

What do you think about the pics, birds or angels?

From what I gather, angels/winged demons or whichever were usually used in Martyrdom illustrations, like if a Saint was executed by an inquisition or whatever. Which keeps me on the track of it being some Martyr punishment. Angels/Imps mourning, as sometimes Imps were used as good.

I posted my pic because of the similarity of POSITION of the objects. If you look to the right of my pic in my pic, you will see Balkan's pic.

There are birds in my pic and things in the air in the other pic, the guy with the ax and a person in that same position in Balkan's. On the ground in my pic is a cut up body and in the other, some person or body on the ground.

My pic is NOT about chess, I'm not sure why the caption on the right says that.

The two pics seemed to have similar design.

Started going through the engravings/etchings/woodcut collection on the BritishMuseum website.

46,512 results.

At present, on page 115 but will take a break for a while. If anyone else is searching, and wants to do a few pages, and leave a note on here of what page numbers they finished up with, would be cool. If it's not part of these 46K results, I'm giving up :D

Working from this list of German engravers. Category:German engravers - Wikipedia

Up to "D" at present with Google image search results and the names in between "_______" inverted commas. Anyone want to start with Z and work backwards, please do. Must take a break soon.

Done! My Google search didn't come up with any results ... So german engravers are out!
Thousands of engravings ran before my eyes so now I need a break! Am having a bad feeling that we'll not find it. Maybe a member with good drawing skills could give a try in replicating the engraving?

The things in the air could be angels, flying demons, or even birds like in my pic, since CROWS can be harbingers of the afterlife in certain mythologies. (literally a horror movie called, CROW, in 1994) Without knowing WHAT they are, recreating them would be a guess at best.

Ah we'll get there. Google image search results are us putting our faith in google.

Museum collections I can imagine have a lot more than what google displays unfortunately. Which is why getting through the British Museum collection would probably be better time spent. I presume other European museums share the scans between each other for their own collections.

Got to page 118 of the BM stuff after I posted. Gets addicting not wanting to give up.

Oh man! I totally forgot that British Library has quite a number of their copyright-free stuff posted on Flickr!
British Library | Flickr
So I'm looking for demons as a keyword in there now. These won't show up on Google image search either!

Edit: so demons, witches, witch, trial, occult, court, inquisition, devil nor engraving yielded any hits! Well...these were somewhat similar (I'll post them here as they might spark some ideas):

Forgot to update, I've searched the BM official site / collection yesterday too, for like eight hours, for all the usual keywords, demons, devil, cleric, bishop, preacher, Testament illustrations, trial, witch, bible illustrations, inquisition etc. Came across an image on it that is like a similar vibe / more stylised depiction of what I remember that the one we're searching for is.30-20131114153235_original.jpg

Has anyone ever tried to contact Gérard Viard, the Art Director? From what I gather, he is 75 years old, and still working designing costumes for theatre stuff in France, even one debuting today. (Seems he used to be a French rugby national player too, which is pretty cool!). I don't have Twitter or Facebook etc, so my use of trying to see if he has any social media ends at that.

On that note, I did email OrlyFilms at orlyfilms@orlyfilms.com yesterday asking if they had any information, as they were one of the production companies. The company finished in 2005 I believe, and the domain is down, but I've yet to get a "failed to deliver" email notification.

Side Quest mission:

Anyone stumble across this photo of Lena Olin which is in the frame during any of their Ninth Gate paper prop hunts? Presume it's probably some promotional photo she had maybe?

Still no luck on this. The last few days I've spent looking at every result on the BritishMuseum.org collection for "woodcut" in "book illustration" and "image only", with 7300 results . Was positive I'd fine it in there. Oh well.

I'll change the search parameters and search on.

"Woodcut" - "Object: Print - Image only" - 16,510 results

OH !!!! HEY !!!!!
I saw you in the comics Today.

That really *IS* today's comic. And it was so perfect that I really only altered the last speech bubble. Nothing else.

Finding this illustration is a personal life goal for me at this stage. I was even thinking about it earlier, that even when it is found by whoever, I'll still be left wondering where I originally saw it. Quite the curse!

Something that might be of interest to people following the thread. Been wanting to track down a copy of this for a few years now. Never got the email notification from Ebay that another had popped up for sale. Just seeing it sold about 10 days ago.

Kind of shocked by the price it sold for of €1250 though. Think the last one sold online for 300 on some German book site a couple of years ago, but the leather was a bit more brownish.

If it was someone here, congrats though! Magnificent looking copy of the Club Dumas book.

Attaching pics for a record, for when the ebay listing gets removed.
