Hey guys - finally finished my HC Mags - turned out pretty nice in my opinion. Might try to grab a pair of V2s soon...

I'm sure you'll get it right man.

Update on my own project, my shoes are now basically the same, as in.....the electronics are broken in both/due to be fully replaced as soon as my new batteries arrive but the tongues are now both modded, ribbings and foam removed and the mid sole has been shaped using a dremel. Am therefore ready to paint my mid sole fully and do the splatter.

Big news is that the 'clear blue' paint I ordered arrived and I dived straight into painting my soles yesterday evening...

Ok so maybe this was a little bit more potent than I expected, the effect is quite dramatic! I know its way more blue than the RDs and that maybe I should've thought of a way to dilute the paint to make it more of a subtle blue but overall I'm kinda pleased. They look pretty cool and the EL still shines through really well due to it being clear paint.

Main things are that they are no longer yellow, it was less messy than rit dye and only required one coat to have a very good effect. It could obviously be thinned to make it less blue, and I would like to see the effect it has on brand new soles that hadn't experienced any yellowing at all.

Now its just a case of seeing how well they hold up to wearing and general use.

Next up is the replacement ribbings, then mid sole paint.

Lookin' good! That little bottle looks just like what I remember using for the Star Trek model ships - but when I mentioned it on the forum a while back I couldn't remember its name which would have made finding it harder. Hope it's flexible enough for this! It's oil-based, isn't it?

I'm not sure if it is, doesn't say on the bottle. Strong stuff either way....done some walking around today and its holding up alright so far the bending of the sole. Unfortunately my shoes aren't in a position to be worn outside yet but hopefully soon. Thanks again for the suggestion!

My ribbing arrived today, and after a lot of fiddling and sore fingers i've ended up with these.

The material is different to the RDs but crucially its mega thin and stretchy meaning that it can be pull tighter to keep the shoe looking slim and after a session with the iron the ribs are almost non-existent.

SO happy with how these are looking now. Hopefully mid sole paint and splatter tomorrow.

These will look great when you finish. Did you do an outrugger sole here?
Are you masking these up or going to free hand it?

Masking probably only took 15~20min, so I probably should have done that each time I added a new layer of rubber. For the grey, I would have just needed a mask at the bottom around the sole. I've done the whole shoe here to do the splatters.

Thanks man, yeah I took what you did with your outrigger soles ages ago and did that but using hot glue to keep them open, I think glasses did that on his also(?)

I'm probably going to free hand the main paint, because that's pretty simple, but for the splatter I will be masking them as last time had a go to see what it would look like and I made a right mess!

Also, I think glasses used acrylic paint for his midsole and it help up very well (correct me if I'm wrong obviously)

glasses did his in two sections where I made mine as a single flared part and looks like you've done the same. From some angles, there is a dip in the middle and I am sure I even attempted that on mine before making my first set of clears.

Yeah good splatter is an art form. The best one I have done was on the pair of soles off the old V1s. I used a paint brush, stood back and flicked and let it do what it does best.
Some parts of my latest rubber effort came out good, but most is too thick. The best part about the rubber is that it won't peel now. There is a small window when you can pick off some of the rubber, but that time has passed now and it is there for good now. The rubber bends and flexes like rubber should and this won't ever crack, fade or turn yellow in the usable life of the shoes.

Not sure. I was really disappointed in the paint I used. It was an almost perfect shade and it was easy to apply and once dried didn't see to want to come away, but after my first wear, there were tiny little fracture lines on all the parts that bend. After a few more wears, it was apparent this was not going to last. So I used acetone to strip it all back and on went the rubber.

Yeah I went for the single outrigger with a kind of flare out at the back, could've been a bit more aggressive with it I reckon, some photos of the RDs look like it really sticks out and others not so much. It's a tough thing to get perfect. If I want I can cut into the hot glue and add more flare so it's not a huge thing.

I'm going to do the splatter with a toothbrush I think, when I tried before it came out with really nice small dots of splatter that were suitably distributed. Just got to hope a few coats of acrylic will hold on the actual mid sole. Maybe some kind of clear coat after it's all done to seal it.

Just made this little comparison shot for myself to see how my shoes are looking right now. I know the V2's will never be exact to the RDs but this was kind of encouraging. The lacing ribs have made such a difference. Also, considering doing the full toe slim again, to try and get it more rounded and with no wrinkles.

Reckon I'm going to do a little more dremiling on the midsole to give some extra definition before I paint later.

I've been scoping aliexpress for the past few weeks tryna decide when/from who I'm gonna get a pair of V2's. I'm figuring after the Chinese new year celebrations are over im going to take the plunge. I have been trying to chat when the sellers are online to not much success.

so far I have spoke to "Dora life" who has decent feedback. Price is around $245 and $3 for epacket shipping. They seemed to be pretty responsive so they are a maybe.

tonight I seen a new seller called "nj sport co" . In the title it says Karen Chen so I clicked in but there were no pics. The seller was online so I tried to chat and got an instant response. The seller said that they were Karen Chen, so not sure about that. I know she was reputable but had stopped selling so maybe she's back?? Price was $250 with free ems shipping.

other thing that seems to be is that the blk/gold colorway a is not in production anymore from the few sellers I have spoke to which sucks as I wanted both colors.

I got the next couple of weeks to decide who I'm going to buy from so any adivice/suggestions on sellers? I don't mind paying like $260 shipped as long as it gets to me in a timely manner, I wouldn't want to wait a month or pay and not getting anything. Also any experience with epacket? Should I only go for ems?

Thanks

The shape is really close, I love it!
I just can't flat the laces area enough with an iron but don't want to completely remove them.

Thanks man! I'm not going to lie, changing the laces is an fiddly, horrible job. But the results are pretty good.

I decided not to change them out because whilst they are over sized, so is the SWOOSH and Cuff, so it kind of matched. This is also in part why I took my Outriggers out as far as I did. It was all about balancing the proportions. And why I then decided to increase the size of the Heel Cup and MAG letters. The more I plat with this rubber, the more I am learning about how and when to apply it during the transition from a liquid to a gel. Last batch was almost an hour and it allowed pimples to be attached to the surface which could be used to add the texture back onto the Mid-Sole. The challenge is taking the existing splatter off as it has pretty much fully cured now and is bonded really well.

The MAG letters came out quite good, but I will be re-doing those in the near future. Mine are now 25mm tall Vs the V2 letters at 20mm tall. I made them by using a graphic printed on paper and laminated, mixed aqua rubber and poured that to cover the area. Once it was set, I was able to cut them out, peel off the template and glue them to the shoe. They are not 100% because they were hand cut out and given my NIKE letters are the same size as those on the V2, might just go back to the impression mold for those.

There is a product I found that allows you to take and impression of something like the lettering and then allows you to stretch it out to increase the size. The PinkySil Putty I used initially only allows the imprint to be flattened out, not increase the size.

Jedifyfe airair I need a bit of help please. The original shared template for the EL was this.
attachment.php

Is this not the same template you guys used? :confused

I printed it out, and no way was it going to fit.

So I drew a new template by importing a photo of a 2011 MAG into Sketch-Up and copied the outline of the EL sheet. I then imported a photo of the V2 with soles removed into the same model. Granted neither photo was 100% on axis, so some "creative license" was employed.

I had to use the scaling tool to squeeze and stretch the each half of the EL panel to fit the V2.

This is the bottom template printed at 100% (95% on the print set up to give me 100% on paper) sitting in a V2 shoe (US13) sole recess.

I wanted to cover both of the cutouts and still have a decent area to glue these clear soles to. I just want to get the OK before I cut up EL sheets.

Thanks in advance.

Good luck with the EL cutting. I was at the airport today and got asked about my V2s by someone who thought they were real, again. No-one ever asks 'are they fake mags?' So I told him to check out Aliexpress and search for Mag. Anyone else get this so much? I'm the only guy in Melbourne who's got them apparently. Well I've never seen anyone else with them. Maybe if I went to Supanova this year I might, lol but I just wear them as regular sneakers not a costume.

Awesome! That is what I had hoped would be the case. I'll continue with this then. Thank you.

Same here.
I would make the el shapes even smaller, as once its behind the rubber, it will look bigger than it actually is, although not sure what it will look like behind your clear soles.
You need to leave a good gap around the edges to glue the clear soles back on.
