Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Just letting people know...another good battery to use for this would be a replacement PS3 controller battery. 1800Mah and very small and thin, you could even stack 2 if you wanted. And they are like $7 for 2

Your a legend dude! Thanks for sharing that!! Best battery find to date in my opinion not just for size, weight and mAh but also it is the safest option as it already has the +/- already soldered up.

Again thank you so much for posting this in my thread :)

Two ordered!

I agree. Now can someone figure out how to run all the EL's and LED's off this battery with the correct brightness, along with a charge port?...

I'm on it mate, two ps3 batteries ordered earlier with overnight delivery so will get them on Tuesday, got another 3v inverter arriving, soldered up 12 LEDs (green yellow and red) also got a A5 EL panel ready to hook up.. So I will have this question answered this week and will also implement the dc charger.

great work,
which 3v inverter are you testing out this time?

struggling to choose one
thanks

Looking forward to this report! :thumbsup

On a side note...I thought I would try to start taking photos of my V2 conversions and match them up with photos of the real MAG's for comparison.

Here are my ankle bubble/LEDs compared with the real MAG's

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Nice photos Brad! Great comparison shots and your camera really picked up on the EL tremendously :thumbsup

Airair - hopefully if Don has his old one I can try that to start but I have ordered one from elwireshop so I have that as a backup, so long as its a 3v inverter anything will do for test purposes.

i read somewhere the dimensions are 35 x 55 x 5mm

I just looked at the v2 buckles, that even if you stick the thinnest inverter and battery combo, because the buckle is not hollow, its very hard to hide something in there.

Thanks for checking the dims Airair, ill have to measure it out in the Cloneprops buckles and see, my plan was though to use these on my black mags :D

For anyone perusing my straps I have a junkyard thread now listed so that this thread stays on track of modifications rather than sales.

I am sure most of you have seen these by now, so here is a 3D image of cloneprops Ankle Buckle from Shapeways.

Plenty of room in there :)

If you wanted even more space you could shave probably 2mm off the PS3 batteries...they come cased in plastic (they have a seam around the side) you can cut around it and split it very easily and that will leave you with this. For a even smaller battery, make sure you cover up the board with electrical tape before you use it though. (I do believe it's a protection circuit on the battery)

As for having troubles powering everything off one battery, I myself don't have much experience with EL products but have tons of experience with LEDs. I have powered about 50 LEDS off a single PS3 battery. I am assuming the EL pieces draw a lot of current? You could always hook 2 batteries together and use resistors for the regular LEDS and the EL wire should have plenty power then? That would allow you to charge the batteries at the same time and have a single switch, and DC port ect.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Thanks for sharing the 3D buckle Cavx! :)

ModsBro some interesting photos, when I seen the ps3 battery in the plastic case I did say to myself "that needs chucked" haha good to see it stripped :)

Ye my plan is to use one battery to start with a higher resistor and if it doesn't work I'm going to have to decide another option possibly using 3xAAA rechargeable batteries and a 5v inverter.. Hopefully not though

well this or virtually any thin battery should fit easily in cloneprops buckle or a scratch build buckle like i made.

But for a v2 buckle, im trying to figure out the easiest method just for lighting up the strap. For 3 of the pairs i have, im just doing the EL Strap modifications, and leaving everything else.

The other pairs i'm going to do a full rewiring on them with the above type of batteries.

If anyone's got the best solution for just lighting up the V2 strap buckle, so that the strap is not sticking out or anything, feel free to share.

The single coin cell inverter i found is about 10mm thick, so that would stick out of the v2 buckle, unless the cover is removed.

No Probs :) Glad it works for you. I don't own a 3D camera so I am making these 3D shots with a standard pro-sumer (wannabe D SLR) camera. I essentially take 2x 2D shots from different angles, then level and space the images in post. I add the 3D text to give you a point of reference for focusing. I've done a really cool shot of my build 2 MAGs. My avatar is from one of the images. It has really good depth and I think 3D just allows you to actually see the detail.

Re: Nike Mag V2 mod discussion and builds

Hi guys sorry for the non posting of my progress

Caloss there is a mod thread for stuff like this...

I'm taking this back to the proper thread.

Caloss, I am looking at your images and impressed by your work, but I do have to ask why you followed the K-MAG with that top collar seam. The RD and MP MAGs DO NOT have this. Both of those shoes have an internal seam which is not visible from the outside.

What are the tabs for?

Yes EL can be a bit weird. The frequency needed to drive an EL lamp at a low down voltage (say 3V) is around 250Khz from memory, that will also make it Blue/Green in colour. As voltage decreases (say from a battery like the PS3 ones or any battery for that matter) the Khz output the inverter drives slowly falls and can change the colour of the lamp as well as the brightness.

Most inverters need to boost the 3v dc input out to An AC and to do that require a hell of a lot of juice. Some around 200ma which doesn't sound a lot but is. The EL panel I bought from ELwireshop runs at around 150ma I think and whines like a goddun!

The circuit I made runs at 10ma at 3V but doesn't have the "ummph" to give a nice bright glow on an EL panel. I have found a couple of newer IC's that should be capble of doing what I want now so am in the process of getting some samples and making a PCB for a newer/modified circuit to go onto.

Brad the huge sole EL looks sick. I'm curious, which inverter are you using with these V2s, and where are you hiding it?

I'll answer that for ya :)

He ripped the V2 circuit out and replaced with the 9v setup so his have batteries in the sole. They are a LOT better as they last over 4 hours like the RDs. The V2s (as I found out on Sat night) barely get 3hours.
