Limited Run Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit - Shipping 10/05/15!

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

Im hoping i get mine before the 25th (halloween party). To answer your question about the strap, if you watch jedifye' videos on youtube he has a tutorial for this exact mod. No need for a new strap if you have the chinese mags

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

I got my kit today and left you feedback. Thanks markpoon. :)

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

This will be my first ever attempt at soldering something (having an absentee dad growing up resulted in a deficiency in many manly skills). Can anyone suggest a good soldering kit for this project? I'm not sure how often I'll need a soldering iron in the future, so I don't want to spend a fortune on what may turn out to be a one-off project. That said, I want to make sure I get a kit with the right kind of solder and an adequate amount of wattage to do this right.

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

jhk1976 everyone will have a different opinion on what soldering iron to get. I suggest to go to your local electronics store and tell them your new to soldering and what your requirements will be and they can guide you from there. Ill throw my opinion in and recommend a soldering station with variable power and an armature with magnifying lens

Thanks for the guidance. How about the solder itself?

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

jhk1976 there are many types of solder. For me personally I prefer lead based solder usually a 60/40 ratio (tin/lead) mix. Lead based solder melts at a lower temp which can save your electronics. Then there is lead free solder which is good too just melts at a higher temp so be careful with small electronics and dont hold the iron tip on for too long.
The flux core typically comes in acid and rosin. DO NOT buy the ACID core its used for plumbing. The rosin core is used for electronics. Hope that helps mate
Oh and you will need to 'tin' the wires. Basically run a bit of solder on the bare wires so it gives good contact and hold when soldering to the board. Unless the wires are already done. I haven't received my EL yet hopefully today so im not sure

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

@Greeky04 Gotcha. Thanks for all the advice! I'll go ahead and get the gear I need. By the time I have it, perhaps some folks here will have already put theirs together and I'll have some examples to follow. :)

Also, something just occurred to me. My lights both have the contact on the right side. If one of these is for the left shoe, and one is for the right, shouldn't they be on opposite sides? Is everyone's kit this way?

hi jhk1976,

Hmm. I was planning on using the Jedifyfe video tutorial on how to take apart the strap for this. In his video, he takes it apart starting at the cuff end, moving towards the existing Nike logo that comes on the V2 strap. If both contacts are on the right, wouldn't this only work for one of the two shoes? Wouldn't the contact need to be reversed for the other shoe since the strap is reversed? The mod he shows in the video has the wiring running to the left of the face of the Nike EL.

hi jhk1976,

you can run the wires behind the EL towards to left side :)

You are right.
the nike logo has been stuck down incorrectly on one of them.
Have a look if you can peel off the decal, turn the el cutout 360 degrees and just put it the correct way round

I really don't see what is the point of putting on the decal the wrong way to begin with? Its creating a problem which shouldn't be there.

Its fairly straight forward, peel off the decal and stick it back down correctly.

hi jhk1976,

you can run the wires behind the EL towards to left side :)

What is the point of that though?
Its just creating a problem for no reason.

The wire tape or wires should run directly from the pins straight. You should not need to fold them behind or anything.
Its just an unneccessary problem for nothing!

Can we just take apart the stock strap on the V2's and put your EL panel in there? Or will we need to make our own strap

Use a hair dryer and peel off the original V2 or Halloween costume strap.

On the V2, since there is a nike logo embedded in, you can simply cut that shape out.
For HC shoe, you need to measure and cut out your own shape.

Follow Jedifyfe's tutorial, really explains in more detail than you could ever want.

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

Here's the back of it if that helps. The front seems to be one solid piece. I'm not sure there's a decal to speak of.

Re: Nike MAG Strap Upgrade Kit

Hey jhk1976You can heat the back up with a blow dryer and peel the wire tape (two copper lengths) and then reapply them the opposite way or you solder the wires like the other strap and just place them behind the logoI personally used new wire tape because I had some
