NIKE MAG Knockoffs

thanks.

do any of you guys know what type of material the kmag buckle is made from? it feels like plastic and its very flexible and you can bend it easily. Or is it a rubber material? I cannot tell.

Im looking for something similar to this for the casting material. What would you guys suggest for a casting material close to that kmag one?

Difficult to tell. At least the pricing is good, so risk is not too high if this does not work out. Maybe you need to ask around in the general modeling section and see what the other guys (with more knowledge on this) come back with.

i got some white polymer clay by Fimo thinking it would be the same as Sculptey, but it was terrible. Its very hard to smooth over and join pieces together, and it just seems to crumble a lot. Eventually though after a few hours, I shaped it over a glass bottle and put it in the oven to harden it. still needs a few things changed and added and smoothed, but this is the best I could get it by making it entirely by hand.

I definitely won't get this Fimo classic again, might try some other brands.

here are some pics, its slightly smaller than my previous attempt, and ive put it next to the kmag buckle for comparison.

I'm thinking of doing a cast of the foam strap pads that come with markpoons mags. Just wondering if anybody knows what type of plastic is best to use for buckle? Obviously need something with a high tensile strength as there's a surprising amount of pressure on the buckle when fastened tight. Thoughts anyone?

great job, looks great.

on the subject of fabric. does anyone know what the material is called that is on the back of the kmag tongue and the inner lining at the back of the shoe?

its like a soft mesh type material. Is it polyester mesh fabric? i was wondering if this is available from any shop, or will any soft material be ok?

for the front of the tongue, we can use leather or pvc fake leather, but for the back of it, been trying to find some good material to use.

the kmag one is nice as i think its the same stuff used on most high end sneakers. the fabric on the inner of the kmag is one of the best things about it, thats why its quite comfortable.

for you guys who have bought craft foam sheets.

how strong are they? if you stretch them, do they rip easily?

i bought some "funky foam" sheets which are approx just slightly less than 2mm in thickness. but if you stretch them they rip quite easily.

So i searched on the web and found some suppliers of eva foam sheeting with the following densities.

low density - shore 30
medium density - shore 50
high density - shore 65

they have sizes of 1mm, 3mm and upwards.

no 2mm though.

which density would be best?

yeah, i did a quick test on the craft foam. even though it says 2mm on the label, i measure it as 1.5mm.

so i glued 2 square pieces of it together using some pva glue and its quite strong now.

Caloss said he has used 3M super 77 spray adhesive for glueing his grey fabric to the foam.

Ive been trying to find which spray adhesive is the strongest and will last the longest. I dont want the foam glue to the fabric to suddenly come off one day!

i was unsure on whether to get 3m Super 77 or Super 90.

if you have any tips, let me know.

or maybe there is another spray adhesive which is proven to be the strongest?

thanks

Yeah, thanks, i guess i will try that, but in UK they don't have Super 77, the only have 3M craft mount and a few others.

So may have to search for it.

im thinking of doing following.

1st foam layer glued to faux leatherette, then to grey fabric.

then 2nd foam layer glued to faux leatherrete then to grey/inner lining fabric.

so with 3mm of foam in total, together with an extra few mm of fabric ontop it should be strong and wearable.

I'm also investigating whether to get these 3mm EVA low/medium/high density foam sheets instead which are available from these medical supply places. Since they are 3mm thick already, it may be easier using these, but not sure yet.

i'm guessing the medium density (shore 50) will be good enough for strength and flexibility.

yeah, im going to rip the uppers off, and create new ones with foam. trying to make them as strong as possible.

i figure the existing kmag uppers are made from thing faux leatherette glued to foam and another thin layer of fabric, so it should be possible to make something wearable.

Might as well give it a go.

On the subject of knock-off Mags, maybe it's just me but the official Nike Mag just does not feel like the same shoe that we see in the movie.

On the other hand, many of the Mark Poon conversions feel much more like the screen-used Mags and that's what I want in a replica of that shoe.

But what is it about the 2011 Mag that feels off? Anyone else have the same opinion? I've been cirlcing a pair for $4000 but can't bite the bullet.

$4K is allot to throw at a pair of shoes even if they are a collectable.

I think airair hit that on the head a few posts back when he made comment about the tongue and cuffs on the 2011 MAG being made from leatherette and where the tongue of the shoe in the film looks like cloth.

The tongue and cuffs of the MP shoes are also cloth and stretch to give that extra height that the 2011 MAG does not seem to have.

From the select images of the film shoe I have, the tongue and cuffs are not leatherette. The let down for the MP shoes is those yellow soles and the one size fits all thing where NIKE offer the clear soles and your size.

As tempted as I am, i'm probably going to pass on the official Mag. It IS a lot to spend for a replica that isn't even accurate to the screen-used prop. Even Nike admitted that the 2011's are inspired by, but not an exact copy of, the BTTF2 shoes.

The cuff/tongue is one area where the MP shoe again is more to my liking. The shoes in the movie seem a little less rigid. The MP just feels like it's going from those screen caps more than the official product.

Plus...the lack of toe cap after the toe slimming feels damn good. Anyone else with me? Damn nice being able to wriggle my toes against the fabric in these shoes.
