New Van Halen single "Tattoo"..

I hear ya! I slammed this album hard the first week I had it. I do hate the lyrics, but it's got some crunch to it. Hard for me to get past no Mikey.

For a guy the VH brothers say they're better off without, they're trying really hard to capture his backing vocal.

I'm angry with myself for liking the better part of this album. If dave would shut the **** up it would be great! :darnkids

Still hate the single though. It's the worst song on the album.

*sighs* They've done it again. I am actually liking this new album, DESPITE the horrendous lyrical writing of "Tattoo". Dave does come up with some good lines like "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" on "That's the Trouble with Never". The musical work is as amazing as ever. The harmonies are well done in places, but I don't think they can pull it off live without Mikey.

I feel so dirty.

Agreement all around, Rylo. It's looking like they will be a better studio act though. There are videos on YouTube of them doing the "Friends and Family" show before the tour starts. It looks like Dave has lost all of his steps and is trying to James Brown it up. Also like he can't believe he is touring again.

Here's "That's the Trouble with Never" at that show.

I'm kind of of two minds on this...

I liked how they sounded live on that video. I don't put too much credence in how Dave dances around simply because I don't care too much. If I was going, I'd go for the music not his dancing. In watching a lot of the video's they've posted of themselves (bad editing aside), the 3 of them seem to really be enjoying themselves, which is a good sign. On the flip side though, it seems like it's going to be a short period of time before someone tells dave to STFU already and just sing. On the DVD that came with the CD there are 3 acoustic songs - which aren't too bad - but there's a way too long intro to yer and yer blues where I found myself saying STFU already. Then on Beautiful Girls he intentionally botches/adlibs some lyrics and thinks he's being funny. He's not.

Another issue I think they're going to have is Wolf. Sorry, but being 20ish and being in a bad with your dad, uncle, and Dave - all at least 30 years older than you has to beyond strange.

As much as I'd like this to work, I think Dave's personna will get in the way eventually. Dave's mantra for the tour should be less talking more singing, and singing the right words. Do the job and don't be so desperate to be liked.

I don't think the song's that bad. However, the video is. It's actually worse. The videos that come with the CD aren't much better either although the songs are. Whoever they hired for those videos needs banned from the business.

Damn. I was just listening to Diver Down in the shop.

Just a different band. Little guitars, Where have all the good times gone...sad again.

Edit/update: And, to make it worse I was just listening to Mikey's backing vocal on "Little dreamer"...
OH MY GOD! It's amazing...been a while since I listened to it.

Go do it right now!!

Cover Down is still one of my favorite VH albums. Mike may not have lead singer chops, but he hits harmonies like no one else can. I am not ashamed to own this album as they did use some studio trickery to have the harmonies tossed into the mix, so I AM enjoying "Truth".

I'm a life long Halen Fan, well up to 5150 anyway. I do like some of the Hagar albums but its no classic VH for me, I got the new Album via itunes last week and gave it a listen on my laptop whilst I was out on tour, it didn't feel that good a buy. I tried it with headphones last night for the first time. It def gets better with a closer listen but I have to say the production and Eddie's Tone (or lack of it) is the thing that ruins the vibe. The guitar sound caries so many frequencies it drowns out everything in its wake. There is no space anywhere to get into a groove, this is something the old VH stuff was laced with, space. Alex has def lost his touch even if his best days where a little wobbly on time keeping the new album has some bad drumming. I was impressed with Wolfgang, even if his dads tone drowns him out a lot of the time. This album needs re mixing and re mastering.

Agreed with the above comments re Mr Roth he does need to wind his tongue in as it just gets boring after a while, and the amount of words per song is just stupid, in some tracks it just doesn't work. Hand on heart I was hoping for an album of "Me Wise Magic" quality. Sadly not this time............Fair Warning before bed I think!

I'd be shocked if it wasn't Eddie playing bass on the album as well. I'm not a drummer, but Alex has always left me in awe. He is no Keith Moon, or Buddy Rich, but he is still a damned fine drummer.

Agreed re Alex, he can really pull out some fine drumming and is def an individual but this album is flat re what he can do best, never thought that it could be Eddie playing bass? I hope not, kinda slaps Wolfie in the face a bit if so.

I'm loving the new album. After hearing "Tattoo", I wanted to wait until I heard everything to comment on it. It's definitely vintage era Van Halen to me. It's a shame they released "Tattoo" as the first single, because that song made me cringe.
The rest of the album is aces, in comparison.
Mike

Still can't get into it. I've listened to the unreleased stuff so much now that this new rehash just doesn't sound right. Diamond Dave has lost his voice.

I keep singing "Let's Get Rockin'!" when I hear "Outta Space", so I kinda feel ya there.

Well at least we all have the new Tribal Tech album to look forward to, roll on March 27th for some real guitar tone and grooves

My fav band of all time, last album was nearly 12 years ago........ Jazz fusion at its best.

If you like guitar players, I can highly recommend em, Scott Henderson is the guitarist

check out these 4 albums, not for the faint hearted and may be a bit over the top if you like your music to be well.....normal.
