New to RPF - Catwoman costume project

Re: New to RPF

I will be wathcing this thread closely, there are some really good ideas here. (Not that I'm going to do a "Drag queen catwoman" for myself, or anything. :lol)

If you haven't ordered your whip yet, you may see if there is a member in Mexico, on here, that would look into one for you. I picked up a real leather one down there in the early 90's for $4. at one of those markets. I'm sure the one on ebay, is probably better quality, and/or more accurate, but mine was $4., and I used to "crack" it all the time. I don't have mine anymore (got lost in a move. :( ), or I would have just given it too you. (Anything to help a gal, dress up. ;) )

So after serious consideration I am thinking about not wearing the open hood cat mask. My hair is really thick so I am afraid it would look weird plus I cannot find anyone to make it without getting a mold of my face. I am however still wearing the goggles.

This might be one of those cases where something looks great in a cartoon or comic page but not so good in real life. She does have a thick head of hair which would be troublesome to hide under a full hooded mask.
Fortunately, this costume choice is open to personal interpretation and can be modified as the user sees fit - not like when one of us is trying to replicat a movie costume - in which case we pretty much HAVE to do it by the books...so to speak.

I have not kept up with this for a while so I figured I would let everyone know where I am at. Just started to go jogging 4 days a week to get the cat woman body ( this took a lot of effort lol)

I am pretty sure I will be using these gauntlet gloves and positive I am buying the goggles.

let me know what you think.

At this point I am waiting a few months to order my costume so I can fit in it. I can't wait!

You don't need an industrial sewing machine for this. Not unless you're using heavyweight leather, and then you'd be better off with an industrial walking foot.

I'd love to know, what would you say is the highest weight of leather you can run through a standard home sewing machine? I've got a couple things I want to make out of thin garment leather but I always thought it would be impossible with my machine, so I put them off.

Sadly no I can't take credit for making them. I did do some alterations and customizing of them. But no I didn't make them. Maybe one day get some pics. Good luck

Looks like you are making some major progress! I am sorry I missed the picks that caused a stir though.

This should be really cool!

I should add regarding a cowl. You could probably have one made from the same fabric or close to the suit.

Tracy (my wife) had hers done in the same black PVC as the suit and she has a lot of hair crammed into it. I think it looks fine

Does she have a lot of thick hair? Mine in long and thick. I dont see how I could manage it stuffed in a mask. I guess I could try some experiments on it before I decide too free mask it.

You might be surprised how much hair you can fit into a cowl, bald cap, etc. You just have to know the right way to do it.

That's definitely true, all you have to do is take a look at Jolene Blalock as T'Pol on Enterprise to get an idea how much hair can be hidden. As T'Pol she had a really short pixie cut but in real life she wears her hair quite long but you'd never know that watching her on Enterprise.

Yep....I have a ton of hair - long and lots of it and I don't have any issues with cowls other than they fit me a little tighter than others. Wig caps definitely help and perhaps even leaving your hair wet and smoothed down. Sometimes I'll even braid it while wet so it stays tighter to my head.

This is all really helpfull information. I need to find someone to make me a cowl :wacko

Re: New to RPF

Braids rather than pin curls also help educe the bulk under a cowl. You are essentially weaving your hair flat rather than adding bulk with lots of pins ;) I use a few pins to hold my plaits down but nothing like how many I use with pin curls.
French braids that go across the head, alternating direction, were what were used on extras for Jack of All Trades when we got wigged up. It's fast and secure for all day shooting. We had 15 hour days most of the time and those wigs didn't go anywhere.

I can nearly sit on my hair so it takes a fair bit of work to put away ;)
