New to RPF - Catwoman costume project

Just to clarify it is not woven, it shows a knitted fabric base. And all vinyl/PVC for wear has a knitted base.

The texture is very much made up ;) You won't be able to get that gloss and that texture seen in the very hi res render:
http://mycheats.1up.com/view/imageraw/61478/catwoman.jpg
But you can get close. I spotted a cire fabric locally with that chunky knit texture and as it was a cire the surface was glossy. It was black though or I'd offer to get some for you :)

Cire is a knitted fabric that has had the surface essentially melted, in finer fabrics the surface looks rather smooth and can look like leather. In this heavier knit you could see the knit.

This place has purple cire and it has stretch in all directions it seems. Just not sure if the texture is chunky enough.

PVC/Vinyl only looks cheap when it isn't handled right, wrinkles are especially obvious most notably around the waist and shoulders. And it definitely requires in person fitting- part of the problem of those premade items. My PVC bodysuits look good because I piece them carefully and make sure to get them to fit into all the curves of the back of the knees, waist and elbows etc:

If you can get hold of an overlocker (serger) it will help greatly as it speeds up the basic sewing process so you can try on and and make those small fitting changes.
And if you would like any advice from someone who has been there let me know :) I'm thinking about another bodysuit soon and it should be quite fun to make up :)

Hmmm, thinking about it you may also be able to get a chunky knit fabric and coat it in a thin layer of latex and shine that up.... If I knew where to get liquid latex from locally I'd be tempted to give it a try and report back :)

I 100% agree with m.d.b. PVC only looks cheap when it's not handled right or when it's cheap PVC. Baggy PVC makes it look like a trash bag. 2 way stretch doesn't fit well and is uncomfortable to wear. But 4 way stretch PVC, the good stuff anyway, is easy to work with and even easier to wear. It's why I suggested it as an option back on ohhhhhh page 4 of this thread. The BEST advice I can give about PVC is this....cut it out to be the size you are without needing it to stretch much while on you. It just should fit like a glove but not be stretched like you would with other stretchy fabrics. The stretch will be used for getting in and out of it and moving around. I found that this is the most comfortable way to wear PVC for long periods of time.

Amen to that, brother!
I'm expecting my Indiana Jones fedora any day now, and it feels like every night is Christmas eve...the anticipation of waking up the next morning and finding the 'Red Rider' under your tree...

AYE! I'm expecting 3 parcels any day now. It's killing me!!!!!! :cry

The PVC doesn't look right, in my opinion, because it's too shiny. The purple material only looks to have a slight sheen to it, barely any at all. That cire material was close, but still a bit too glossy.

But yes, you're right about the knit.

I just need to make time to do more research. I found one cosplay company that would make my costume for me for $330.00. They were unable to send me fabric swatches. So I am either going to find a company that will or perhaps go to Joann Fabrics and see/feel materials for myself and possibly see if they have that material. I also agree about the PVC looking shiny. I know it's hard to match exactly considering its from a video game but darn it I want to get as close as possible.

Thanks again for all of your continued support. It is much appreciated!

The render is made up but looks like rubberised fabric, but I bet that would be really hot to wear. I've seen velvet a Catwoman suit and unfortunately it just looked like a romper suit. :angel

Some kind of spandex or maybe textured neoprene perhaps?

You could probably take them to a boot shop and have the heel replaced with a thicker one. Most shoe shops will replace souls. :)
Really? And here I thought they just replaced soles.

Replacing souls sounds difficult and expensive, if not down right immoral and illegal. :lol

Personally, I could never wear heels like that, I'd be afraid of turning my foot and breaking an ankle! :unsure

Not all PVC is shiny like that.

Unfortunately that colour is only 2 way stretch and it's been sold out for as long as I can remember.

Neoprene would work, and it's easy to sew. However, you'll never find that colour. Zam purple is about as close as you'll get and it's way too light. Neoprene like that tends to have a lycra laminated to the neoprene so there may be potential to dye it though. I've dyed lycra but not once laminated so I don't know if it would work. Neoprene isn't that uncomfortable to wear.

Personally....I'd go for a really nice and thick moleskin lycra. The thinner the lycra, the less "substance" there is. The wrinkles on her suit definitely have some bulk to them.

Here's a couple of options for you....but the purples are not the greatest matches....

There are a lot of different options in the miliskin lycra from the same company and you might find a better match to the purple, however it will be thinner lycra.

This one is a miliskin so it will be thinner but it's still thicker lycra than you'll usually find in fabric stores or at least for WAY less than you would find them for there.

Hope that helps.

The Miliskin one looks like what I would pick.
As a side note, Miliskin is what was used for the Superman Returns suit:thumbsup

Look what I found in the garment district today. :ninja Sorry for the webcam shot.
And I have to say that I have had to study worse photos for detail. :love

Hello all! I've been lurking for a while...also a past Catwoman costumer here! Though I went with the Batman Returns version, I LOVE this one and hope to make it in the future!

Wanted to throw in my two cents, something woven. Lycra is a GREAT idea cause it's stretchy and breathable which can be VERY useful in a full body costume.

Fangs, LOVE your Catwoman! Wish I had found some 4-way PVC stretch...I bought a catsuit off of Ebay since there was NO PVC to buy around here, cut the whole thing apart and sewed it all up again seam by seam ( taking off about an inch all the way around since it was a SM and STILL too puckery/baggy ). Mine was 2-way stretch, and though it didn't make for the most comfortable outfit, by the end of the night it had molded right to me and looked fab! So in the end it wasn't a terrible plight with having limited resources and little budget.

Oh WOW aelynn! Yours looks FABULOUS!!! MJ Trends has the nicest 4 way stretch PVC that I've found. You can just tell the difference as soon as you touch it. It doesn't stick to itself really badly like cheap PVC can and it doesn't feel like a plastic bag. They also have an amazing no stretch version that works well for the corset. The 4 ways stretch is $12.50 per yard I think...right around that anyway. Sometimes even on sale for less!

Yay! It's my buckle. You get to make my very first custom made thing ever. How does that make you feel? :lol

This makes me incredibly sad because I'm Canadian and have no idea what MJ Trends is, though I wish I had one near me. :confused

Back on topic: Nice buckle, there! With all the bits and pieces I've seen so far, I'm sure it's going to come together great!! Let me know how you go about ( or where you go about ) getting the goggles...love them!

So I figured I would worry about the costume itself last and focus on the little things. I want to tone my body up more anyways before I get anything made to fit me. My next search is for the gloves. I found a pair on wilsons leather site. I like them and they are on sale for 35 bucks compaired to the original 70 bucks. It is not certian that these will be what I get because I want to continue to look to see if I can find some that are more similar to the ones from the game.

Haha an old old picture ( from 2005) I found of me and my kitty. I am the ultimate cat lover for sure. If it wasn't for Frosty talking me out of it I would be the cat lady who has hundreds of cats. I know this is off subject but I figured I'd share.

If your looking for a good quality whip I am that guy around here. I make them in many different styles and from many types of materials to fit most budgets (nylon paracord, cowhide, and kangaroo). My new website is www.classicbullwhips.com, check it out and let me know what you think, I can do any style you may be looking for.

I found these and unfortunately they do not have them in black. It's a woven material and I am sure if I picked these I could dye it black
