New Photo of Marvel's Thor, Odin, and Loki

Well you have to remember they are "gods." When was the last time you saw a "god" wearing weathered, tattered, messy clothes? Well beside Buddha who supposedly promoted shedding your materialistic things.

they're the norse gods. not "new gods". they fight loki, and frost giants. not kalibak and darkseid. it looks too clean too polished, to be gods based off of warrior people. granted, they originally looked goofy, but one was still convinced they were norse gods and rubbed shoulders next to norsemen.

they look too much like new gods to me. or fourth world. no where near what they're supposed to be. the only save face is thor, because he sort of looks like his new costume.

i wont be seeing this movie. it just looks like crap. like everyone involved has no idea what their source material is. the interview we all saw a little while ago was a good example. "uh i play thor. im the thundergod." "im natalie portman and i want this guy bad! im heavily flirting! im his love interest!" they looked clueless.

im glad it looks as bad as it does though. i havent been a fan of marvel movies since after the 03 hulk(iron man is alright, but not ZOMG FANTASTIC BADASSAWESOMEICANTBREATHEBECAUSEITSSOCOOL). this might be a good starting point for them to stop for a while for reassesment and get an idea where everything is going like they've said they're trying to do for so long. it just doesnt match up to the rest of these movies, that hammer at the end of ironman 2 doesnt help what ive seen after convince me that it is.

Hollywood, hire me as a concept artist, or anyone else, because everyone can make a better design than these "stargate" spacesuits...
Or is this a spinoff/mixover of stargate and Marvel universe?

I didn't say I wanted tattered or messy! I just want authentic-looking materials and design. For sure, their wardrobes should be extravagant and very detailed. But it should look like there's metal involved, like there's weight to it. A familiar norse aesthetic, something less futuristic, would be nice as well. I'll reserve judgment for now; perhaps it will look different on screen and they can sell this in context.

It has that crazy cool Kirby design quality to it that exists somewhere between myth and science fiction. I never thought they'd go that direction but I'm glad they have. Super curious where they are going to take this.

The lighting and the goofy smile kinda ruin what could have been a cool promo photo.

Also why does the gold coloring on Odin's armor and eyepatch not match? Totally clashes. Tacky to the max. Fer shur... :)

Here's some classic Thor artwork showing the weird fantasy/scifi mix of style-

All hail the space gods!

It's the only thing that's got my interest so far: These costume designs SCREAM Kirby and for that alone they get my $$$ come opening day. It's pure homage to the legend that was Jack and as far as I'm concerned that's a good enough start.

It's a total homage to Jack Kirby, for sure... doesn't really translate too well in a still image. But, the film has my money... despite the look.

The Thor costume looks the same as the previous pic and the concept art so...no big shock.
The others look similar I don't have an issue with them. I am afraid I can't get too worked up over the background of a still shot.:rolleyes
I am looking forward to the flick and have liked all the new Marvel films so I have no reason to think I will dislike this one.

Hey, cool, another comic book movie.

And it's being converted to stereo.

I'm sure it'll be great.

Honestly, I do.

(How do I convey sarcasm without using an emoticon?)

One pic doesn't make or break a movie. They have a good cast, and a solid director. I'll wait and see how it goes.

Thor doesn't look big enough.

What's with all the pretty boys in movies these days? I'll bet they all have manicures.

Nick, thanks for posting the Kirby artwork. They're definitely going for the Kirby mythic, tech-armor look -- which is great as far as I'm concerned. I have no problem with the design of Odin's armor. I agree, the lighting and his smirky smile aren't good. Wouldn't give up on the movie because of this. Verily, I sayeth, rock on.

I definitely have less of a problem with the design than with the look of the material. It just looks like plastic...

I do think the flick will be good. Kenneth Branagh knows how to handle characters, that's for sure...

Ditto what DarthGordon said... I want to see the helmets! I mean, I don't expect them to wear them 100% of the time but it is kind of an integral part of the costumes in the comics and I hope they at least have them in the movie in some form.

That pic definitely throws me. Thanks for the pics of the Kirby art. That helps me feel a little better about the "look" though it's not at all what I was expecting. The stringless eyepatch thing on Hopkins looks weird to me and I'm not really digging that yet. Or his costume. It reminds me of what I hated about the Wolfman where he requires WAY too much "movie magic" to make him look believably tough and strong.

I mean, maybe I'll wind up loving it. Right now, I'm not feeling ANY excitement for Thor which is really kind of disappointing.

And yeah, it kinda does look like "Iron Santa" peeing in the pool with that expression on his face...

Thanks to many of you.....

I hated this pic until the references to Kirby were mentioned. Jack Kirby always did that amazing/weird zig-zg shading, which on a second look, is what these costumes represent.

....now i'm hyped up again!!!!!!!

Looking forward to this again!!!!

Rich
