New Green Hornet Trailer just released

It's just my humble opinion and I don't mean to diss any Green Hornet fans (are there any?) but the character is so cornball anyway that I think a dramedy might be the ONLY way to make this remotely work.

And after seeing so many movies that take themselves WAY too seriously and sucking to one degree or another (X3, Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, Jonah Hex), I can kind of buy into this as a dramedy type of movie personally. Heck, this even seems to follow the concept fairly well while explaining why the Green Hornet always takes a back seat to his driver's fighting skills. (Sort of like Batman and Robin but where Batman is incompetent and Robin does all the real work.)

Which is NOT to say that it won't suck... that's a very real and likely possibility. BUT it's got my interest piqued at least.

Kato is looking sufficiently badass, as is the Beauty. My only serious concern is Seth Rogan.

And that is a seeeeerious concern.

Ok, a few thoughts.

1.) It could be entertaining IF they can find the right balance between action and comedy. Frankly, I felt Pineapple express did NOT find that balance and was merely mediocre as a result. Interesting concept, poor execution hampered by too much self-deprecating stoner humor. Not that I don't like that, but I don't like it mixed with action. Other "genre mashups" have been problematic, too. Club Dread, for example. Is it a horror movie? Is it a comedy? It couldn't decide, and suffered as a result. Not funny enough, nor horrific enough. That's gonna be the biggest issue with this film.

2.) I remember when this character was called The Pink Panther. He had a sidekick named Kato, too, who did all the heavy lifting.

3.) My understanding is that (setting aside the 1960s cheese-ball show, which, you may recall, ran alongside the 1960s cheese-ball Batman show), the Green Hornet is NOT a comedic character, and that while Kato can certainly kick ass, it's not as if Kato does all the heavy lifting. I can understand wanting to downplay the "Ah, my trusty minority manservant" angle, but you don't have to flip the roles or downplay one's competency in order to do that.

4.) Seth Rogen isn't really all that funny to me most of the time. He seems like a fun dude to hang out with, but I don't find his films to be all that funny.

Could work, I like the very light tone of it! Campy, but not as much as 1966s Batman campy, loads of action and martial arts.

A bit like "Inspector Clouseau" (who had his own Kato) meets "Sherlock Holmes" meets "Batman".

Why do they have to make the Green Hornet a complete "doofus" and Kato the Man In Charge? A 360 degree opposite of the TV series.

I would figure that the movie would be a serious flick not a comedy. I'm a bit disappointed. Seth Rogan could have taken the role in a serious form rather his typical ROM COM format!

If anyone can cull a dramatic performance from a comedic actor, it's Gondry. (Jim Carrey was never better than in Eternal Sunshine.)

I'm delighted to hear (and now see) that he's toned down his directorial "vision" for this movie for the sake of the story. I was getting tired of his "style" (The Science of Sleep killed it.) but I think we was, too. Glad to see he's not all ego.

From the trailer, it seems like they've got the character dynamics down. As a Hornet fan, I'm willing to give it a whirl.

Dueledge already read my mind and made my post for me! :)

Look at other TV shows that were turned into campy movie comedies (although some were comedies on the small screen) that have bombed!

Charlie's Angels
Starsky and Hutch
The Dukes of Hazard
Land of the Lost
Lost In Space (I liked it though)
Josie and the Pussycats
McHales Navy
The Avengers
Wild Wild West

and the list goes on and on and on and.........

I just can't wait for Manimal to be made into a feature film!!!!

Wasn't Stephen Chow going to play Kato? I haven't heard any news on this movie in months, but I thought he was cast. Anyways, it looks pretty good to me, even with Cameron Diaz in it, and I hate her so much I can barely even watch a movie she's in.

i cant be one of the 4 people alive to love the frank miller/gabriel macht spirit and not give this a chance. ive poo pooed it from the start, but after watching the trailer, i really want to give it a shot.

Minor point, but Charlie's Angels did not bomb. In fact, it generated a sequel.

Starsky & Hutch did reasonably well and is generally enjoyed by those who like the Stiller/Wilson approach to comedy. >shrug<

The rest I couldn't care less about.
