New Futurama Episode Discussion..LOVING IT!

I just watched the 2 new episodes and wanted to see what others thought.

I am so happy to finally have Futurama back so no matter what I'll be a faithful viewer (well I'm in Canada so I had to cheat since we aren't privileged enough to see it air here yet).

I enjoyed the episodes but they just seem a little off to me. I realize we have a lot to accept as normal for the Futurama universe but everything just seems a bit too off the wall IMHO.

A few little things in the first episode bothered me. The stem cells used to remake their whole bodies from the dead...well that's a bit too convenient. They can always be brought back if this is the case it seems. How the heck did that even work on Bender?! They coudl have at least made up some silly reason to acknowledge that he is NOT a human being so human stem cells wont do anything for him.

The professor seemed a little bit too goofy and the mention of him killing people to get their stem cells..I just don't think that would have flown in the original series run. A small joke but seemed a bit too dark and eccentric to me.

The Planet Express ship was demolished yet it shows up later. Did the professor rebuilt it that fast?

Zap's head making a comment as it hung without a body seemed ridiculous. In an older episode when Fry's head gets severed Zoidberg has to quickly attach it to Amy's body to survive. Yes that was a plot device but we all know a head cannot survive without a body.

In the second episode Zap seemed a little too clever to pull off what he did to fool Leela. The fact that they were forced to "consummate" seems too convenient. It may lead to Fry and Leela breaking up, but I'd say the old Leela would have said "no way" to sleeping with Brannigan again no matter what the cost. The fact that she slept with him once was a big deal for a lot of the run of the original episodes yet here we are 2 episodes in and they have done it again already.

In spite of my criticism I am very very happy Futurama is back and I will watch and enjoy EVERY episode. I do fear that they may have developed so much of their own "verse" that they now play with that instead of the satire type humor they made in the past that was based on Sci Fi movies, TV, Video Games, etc.

As a comparison the first Austin Powers (as a comparison) was great because it was clever and original. The rest became jokes of themselves and weren't nearly as effective to me.

I felt the same way after watching the 2 new episodes. The V satellite that was destroying the planets was based on the 1st Star Trek movie. I was really disappointed with Leela making out with Zap as if it was nothing & having Fry look on.

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

My favorite line was from Zap.

"Mr. President. What the hell?"

:lol

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

I loved them, if you watch all the other episodes the professor makes a lot of off the wall comments about murder, LOL.

I liked the Zapp quote "I wax my rocket everyday!"

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

I thought they were a great return to the series. 'Much better than the DVD movies they released! :thumbsup

My favorite line was Farnsworth - "I suffered a little brain damlage."

In response to your post, Hankey, I hate to simplify it to this, but it's a cartoon! From the same people who brought you the Simpsons! They are not meant to make perfect sense or be logical. I think that's been part of the show's charm. It sounds like you're over analyzing a bit...

And regarding your statement that a head cannot survive without a body - I don't know how much Futurama you've seen, but there are talking heads (sans body) all throughout the series. Now of course it's a bit more believable because the head is in a jar of fluid...wait, what? :confused

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

I am well aware of the heads in jars and have accepted that as Futurama canon (I have seen everything Futurama many times), but like I said for Fry's head to be saved it had to be attached to Amy's body so from that we know a head needs to be attached to something to survive. Why was it important in an older epiosde for Leela to save Fry from the guys in the alley when they were about to remove his lungs? He would have died!

Oh man..I'm not over analyzing..I just had a few opinions about things that IMHO were a bit too off the wall based on the canon established by the original run. My fear is that it gets too over the top and becomes ridiculous like the Simpson's did.

For us to ever feel the crew is in danger we have the believe they could be killed. If they cram as many characters, jokes, decapitations, sex, etc it will lose it's sharp charm. I love Futurama and am very glad it's back so I'll watch and enjoy every episode, but that doesn't mean I can't find some things a little too campy if they don't seem to follow the verse I have grown to love. Yes it is a cartoon, but it has to be based in some sort of reality for us to relate.

If the ship is destroyed...it can't miraculously appear 5 minutes later..and Bender cannot be reborn with stem cells. At the very least a clever joke or line explaining it would have sufficed. They know Futurama viewers are smart and don't miss a thing (from listening to commentaries).

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

I gave it a resounding "Eh..." The writing was better than the Simpsons has been for the last 10 years but not as good as the original Futurama episodes. Still, glad it's back and looking forward to more.

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

If my favorite cartoons had to be based in reality for me to relate, i wouldn't relate to any cartoons...or really anything on tv. :)

I liked it. Zap did steal the show with his one liners. Hard to believe they're back!

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

The first episode was decent, it had the task of tying up loose ends from the movies. The second episode was great IMO. Classic actually. I did feel a little weirded out about Leela and Zap, but I trust the writers that there will be something more to it.

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

You are criticizing Futurama's use of science?

Really?

Actually yes. A lot of the commentaries explain how many things are based in science and are actually possible. Something the writers seemed to be proud of.

A whirlpool that makes people age rapidly.

A space ship that doesn't move, but instead moves the universe around it.

A robot devil that can just swap hands with a person using a cleaver.

Water breating pills that are suppositories.

A robot that picks up one arm by an arm laying on the ground, which is then picked up by the arm he just attached to his shoulder.

Candy hearts burnt in a star destroy countless civilizations, except Earth.

People's heads kept alive in jars. People who died hundreds if not thousands of years before any kind of science could have preserved the head properly.

A bowler hat that makes a monkey smarter.

A box that holds our own galaxy, held within our galaxy.
Really, if you're getting your science from Futurama, turn off the TV and read a book already.

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

I liked the second episode.......... Leela running around with nothing but fig leafs.............. All right!!

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

So, the orgy's off? :cry

Loved the new episodes. They felt just like the ones from season 4 with a bit more zazz to them, and definitely a step up from the boring and long-winded movies. (y)thumbsup(y)thumbsup

For some reason, that portrait of Fry from episode 2 was hilarious to me. :lol

Re: New Futurama Episode Discussion

Prof. Farnsworth: I'm going to make one final attempt to awaken Leela. After all, there's always hope.
Fry: Really?
Prof. Farnsworth: No, don't get your hopes up.

C'mon, what's not to like? :D

I am THOROUGHLY enjoying these new shows more and more with every episode. I am laughing out loud many times. The show seems to have recaptured it's groove and is working great in it's 30 minute format.

I did feel the first couple episodes seemed a bit off, but I am enjoying these soo much! I am in the middle of last Thursday's episode where everyone is switching bodies. Hilarity ensues!!! :) I had to pause it to refill my coffee and share it here.

I may have bee too harsh o the first couple of episodes. FUN FUN SHOW!

Yeah the first few episodes weren't quite right. But there have been several great episodes. The time machine episode, the Bender's mortality episode, and the body switching episode have all been great. They feel like they are straight out of classic Futurama.

I think the first few episodes were testing the waters. They seem able to get away with more stuff than on Fox now too. Futurama has always been kinda hit or miss at times but so far i'm glad it's back. Now if comedy central would just bring Drawn Together back and cancel Southpark (its' comedy central's version of the simpsons, long in the tooth and dull).
