New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Here's what I'm not getting... Oswyn erased all records of The Doctor from the database and supposedly caused the Daleks to forget him... but the ones in the Parliament *just* saw him a few hours ago. They're still organic creatures, they have brains... at least the ones on the ship should remember him and could presumably re enter some of the information. Kinda like wikipedia I guess.

Favorite quote

Oswyn: Do you know how you make someone a dalek? Subtract love, add anger... doesn't she seem a bit too angry to you?

Amy: Well... somebody's never been to Scotland!

To me the difference in the real Cybermen and the Cybusmen is that in a newer episode they ran into just a cyberhead, BUT when they picked it up it started lashing cables around out of it's neck, and you just FELT that if a cable got hold of you, you were going to be converted. Cybusmen don't have that feeling of danger, as they have to drag you to a conversion chamber, giving you some hope of escape.

Fair point but I see the "hive mind" mentality as almost being a reflection of the way our current society is headed. I've noticed people seem to be retaining less information about many things since the advent of Wikipedia and other such sites because they can always have that connection to the content.

I agree. Phone numbers from childhood? I can remember them all. Anything after I got a cellphone and didn't have to look at it after I entered it? May as well forget about it, because I can tell you I have.

This is why everyone freaks out when they aren't connected to the internet.

"OMG! What do I do in this emergency!"

"I don't know! I can't ask Wikipedia!"

:lol

I'm completely new to this show, as I just got BBC America in HD, so I figured I'd give it a shot. It's pretty damn good, I must say. Still learning as I go.

I highly recommend watching from the start of the 2005 series. A lot of things will make much more sense. :)

Exactly.

Especially loved seeing all the classic daleks in the latest episode though :D

It does make you appreciate certain things more that's for sure! Although I wouldn't recommend it for the casual fan, if someone started with 1963 Who they could be put off really with with the dated production value.

Best to watch the 2005 series & then go back if you want some more. :)

I've just gone back to 1963 and I'm seeing some of the old stories in their entirety for the first time.
One you accept the slower pacing and multi-part nature of story-telling that was the norm back then, you can enjoy some great episodes. It's amazing the alien worlds and other settings they could create with no CGI, small studios and very quick filming schedules. The first Daleks serial stands out as amazing and makes me appreciate the original design even more.
I will say, tho, that I'm glad we have stronger female characters nowadays. Sure, they'll still scream occasionally, but not every five minutes, and then burst into tears.

Agreed. Although it annoys me just as much when they do the opposite, making them seem like they're not even human.

It helps to think of them in their context.

To me, watching the classic series start to finish has not only been about the stories and the adventure, but it's really the evolution of TV itself. Seemed obvious in the first episodes that it was the transition from radio and stage plays to TV. Taking pains to really 'search through a desk' or 'read a book' etc. Effort was put into things like that that slowed down the stories because on radio and even in a play, they were things that you couldn't really do before. Even the dialog seem to have been performed as if on stage (enunciating).
