New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

While I certainly think can hold a show all on his own, It would take some of the fun out of it for me. A huge part of my enjoyment of the show is the dynamic between the companion(s) and the Doctor.

Indeed, the companions are an excellent, and often essential part of the show, always have been. BUT...

11 is shaping up to be "Amy Pond's Doctor". I never once considered 3 to be "Jo Grant's Doctor", or 4 "Sarah Jane's Doctor", or even 9 or 10 "Rose's Doctor", though 10 did get close to it.

A little alone time never hurts with the Doctor, all it takes is an episode or two, then wiz bang, new companion, new dynamic, fresh new program.:thumbsup

My problem is not with the companions, but when the show becomes so focused on the companions that The Doctor takes a backseat. This is further made worse by the fact that Smith is so goofy around other people that we have never gotten a chance to see him on his own.

Its been 2 years since Matt Smith took over the role and I still have no clue who the 11th doctor is. What his feelings are or what he thinks about. Hes too busy running around like an 11 year old on crack and acting silly that they missed all opportunities for development.

I actually think that all the running about is a massive part of who he is. He runs around being silly just so he doesn't have to ruminate and such. In essence, he is running form himself. Though I thought Amy's Choice provided us with some good insight into the Doctor. Albeit through the dream lord. Moffet I believe is actively attempting to avoid the sad/broody sort of Doctor that we saw in Tennant and to a lesser extent, Eccleson.

Yea, that would be nice, but we'll never see that from Moffat. (science)

While I agree with this statement for Science Fiction in general, I don't think it's appropriate for Doctor Who. Doctor Who has NEVER been "Science" fiction in the truest sense of the word - it's always been "Fantesy" which happens to use elements of science when it suits them (much like Star Wars and Ray Bradbury's "Martian Chronicles"). If you try and turn fantasy into science fiction the end result is "midiclorians".

I appreciate the lengths the writers/producers go through now to keep it from being pure fantasy (at least there's an explanation rather than "it is because it is"), but I think part of the adventure of the show is the willingness to throw reason out the window to make something possible that reason says is purely impossible.

Agreed completely. Matt Smith is your 19 year old cousin who shows you around New York City via Segway on the subway. He's excited and wants to show Amy and Rory how awesome and amazing everything is and jus throws caution to the wind.

In addition to running from himself, though, I think he's trying to be Peter Pan after having left the island and grown up. He wants to show us "fun" rather than the burden and responsibility Tennant and Eccelstien showed us. Tennant tried to be fun, but it was in that 28 year old, let's go for drinks after work and hang out, but I have to be home in time to pay bills and call the contractor.

Its not broody, its giving the Doctor a bigger range of emotion to make him a more well rounded and believable character.

While il agree that Tennant got a bit emo at times, I atleast believed him as a person and could empathize with him. Smith is just always goofy all the time. Even when something signifigant happens that should resonate with him (like finding out there was another timelord alive) its like it barely fazed him. Just more sillyness. I wish he would just settle down just a little and let us get to know him. Let us inside his head a bit. I think Eccelston hit pretty much the perfect balance.

This is just who #11 is. He has shown a pretty impressive range of emotional geography even if his natural state settles in Goofytown typically. The Doctor's Wife showed the full gamut. In Let's Kill Hitler the line about showing him someone's life he hasn't ruined...umm, wow. I couldn't ask for more.

In my opinion, wishing for Smith to be less goofy is like wishing #4 wore a shorter scarf, or #6 was less of a jackwagon, or the Tardis was a little less blue. This is The Doctor. There absolutely is a character arc taking place in his two seasons. It's not as bludgeoning as Tennant's megalomania slide....but that's what he was emerging from! This seems like a completely natural progression from Time War>9>10>11.

Obviously, it's not for everyone. I get that. But this is The Doctor.

I think Matt can stand on his own. I think he has done an excellent job and is quickly becoming my favorite Doctor. However, since he took over, the show has almost become all about Amy with the Doctor as a side plot. Rory, to me, is still the "tin dog" I'm afraid. The Doctor's companions should always play a sizable role in the shows, but when they start to become the main attraction...

A friend once observed that the first new Doctor as portrayed by Eccleston was a very damaged individual, still reeling from the Dalek war. The second new Doctor that Tennant essayed had healed a bit. This new Doctor, and I do rather like Smith, has gone through a period of recovery and re-discovered his inner child. Oddly, he reminds me of Pertwee, in a way.

That's because he's tall and thin with a mop of hair, right?

BTW - I love the new coat that they have him wearing from time to time. It gives a bit more of an old style Who feel to it.

He runs around acting goofy because Moffat can't write emotion, only timey wimey and jokes.

I don't want there to not be a companion, he just needs new companions. Like Shadow said, he's Amy's Doctor. It's the Amy Pond Show, with Rory and the Doctor.

I wish BBC America would stop showing that stupid opening with Amy saying how when she was little she had an imaginary friend. With that opening it sure does sound like it's her show. I wonder what they will do when she is finally gone.
