New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Just watched the Confidential. Good stuff. Amazing that Gaiman started writing this ep so long ago.

One thing I remember that seems significant is when Idris/Tardis touches Amy on the face. I have a feeling they'll be referring back to that moment later on this season.

Also, we were on the road so I watched it on BBCA for the first time. Holy crapfest! Is that Amy opening monologue in every episode??? It's so bad. And the commercials (even with DVR) are so horribly placed. The UK version is 1000x better than what they are airing in America.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of BBCAm and Doctor Who this season, so I've switched to buying the episodes off iTunes (and, eventually, the DVDs).

You're right that the editing is horrible. They cut for commercials every 6 or 7 minutes and half the time you can't make out what the character is saying because they fade out the episode audio and fade in the loud "theme" audio. VERY annoying. :angry

Also, the Amy intro (which isn't present in the iTunes version) isn't really a great addition. If they somehow combined it with the previous week reminders, then maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

I donno. I don't remember it being this bad last season...

Yeah, the "Amy monologue" is in every episode. Fortunately, it's far less annoying when you record the show on a dvr and can fast-forward through it. :D

As for the commercials, it seems BBCA has no concept of timing. Episodes of both Doctor Who and Top Gear can be ruined by their use of commercial placement. The other thing I find annoying (and I don't know if they do this in the U.K. as well) is the "teasers" they use just prior to the commercial breaks during Top Gear--instead of showing a tease scene to whet your appetite for the next segment, they show the best moment of the next segment which completely ruins the effect.

Still, considering most of the rubbish being shown on American television, I'll take BBCA flaws and all.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Count me in as a Matt Smith fan.
LOVED series 5 and so far, digging series 6 although a little confusing at times, it's not like pulling teeth to rewatch the episodes.
Am I the only one who rather likes the 'Amy' intro?
If felt that what they did with series 5, as far as introducing the companion as a child - was a beautiful thing. I really think how series 5 was set up and continued really helped to get the popularity of the show in America kicked up a notch. The new Amy intro is playing with that popularity as the show has a new and fresh concept.
For those who don't like anything new and fresh, just remember that it DW went off the air for a long while simply because it was not current anymore. RTD brought it back by breathing fresh air into the ideas behind the show and that is what is happening now. There is nothing wrong with it at all.
DW still has all the things we like about the show - interesting monsters, aliens and robots, impossible situations, and of course the wild and brilliant doctor.
My guess is that the people who do the most complaining about this new series are the ones who are first in line to watch it on Saturdays:)
I really enjoyed the most recent episode The Doctor's Wife. The concept was something not explored before (so far as I know) and I'm happy we finally got to see some corridors in the Tardis....still holding out to see other rooms which we NEVER see, like the pool and Library.
I really like where the show is going and the flavor it has. There is alot of good momentum built up with the Matt Smith era of DW and I am glad I can enjoy the adventures!

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

God, I apsolutly hated Idris. What is Moffat's obsession with turning the "wacky" up to 11? If we were going to personify the Tardis (an idea in itself that is debateable at best) can't she just be someone easy for the audience to relate to and not immediatly thrown in as an off the wall comedic sidekick? When picturing the Tardis as a person, the first thought that comes to mind is not a Helena Bonham Carter impersonator. God this whole thing reaked of Tim Burton.

The character was ALOT like Helena Bonham Carter...wonder if that was intentional?
Anyway, I thought it was a fun idea...and at least they didnt keep her around for future episodes!

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Something I thought of today... in one of the past episodes, River said that the TARDIS wasn't supposed to make the grinding sound and only did it because the Doctor left the brake on. If that were true, wouldn't it have made sense for "Sexy" to point that out to the Doctor? She mentioned the door thing...

Yeah, I thought of that too. Honestly, River's line about the break should not have even been written - the sound didnt need to be explained like that....oh no...I'm nitpicking!!!

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

I thought "Pull to open" only referred to the little alcove where the phone is (on a real Police Box)?
If Idris/Tardis was going to point out that, then why not mention that the wording on the sign isn't true to a real Police Box, either?

I think River was lying or joking about the brakes, what she actually did was activate some sort of stealth mode. If the Tardis herself says she goes "whoooo-ksh" then I believe her.

Oh, and E-Wan... you stole the reply I was going to write!

I'll just assume you read my post and then popped back in time to write it before I did.

Haha! :ninja

I also had the same thought about the PTO sign only referencing the alcove door - but it's a minor nit to pick in an overall excellent episode.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

And another thing....did the TARDIS always have a cloaking device, or was that just written in as a gimmick to only serve that one scene in episode 1 of Impossible Astronaut?

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

Tardis has always had a broken cloaking device.

That one was convenient to say the least. I have a feeling we won't see it for another few decades.

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

This 'two threads' thing is getting kinda dumb...any chance you guys could post new episode discussion to the Season 6 thread?

Straker, aside from the Ironside, which was pretty awesome, I think Victory is all kinds of dumb in every aspect. The only thing I can say in its favor is that it wasn't as dull as the Silurian episodes, which I can bareley even remember.

That said, it isn't as long to sit through as DIM (never noticed that acronym before..) DIM did have awesome Dalek tommy guns though :lol

Every aspect? Even when compared to the bad "American" accents, the pig slaves, the part where Sec shoves a guy up his rectum and comes out with phallic head tentacles and the idea that gamma radiation strikes like lightning and that DNA can be transferred by lightning, the only parts of VOTD that was off was the professor being defused by thinking of love and that people don't like the new Dalek design. The writing for the most part in VIctory was solid IMO and it certainly wasn't the worst Dalek episode let alone the worst of the modern series or hell, worst of the Moffat run. I think the Beast Below was the worst of Moffats run.

I know the chamelion circuit is busted, but a cloaking device that turns it completely invisible is news to me. You'd think the Doctor would use that more often so its a shame they used such a cheap trick in that episode...

Re: Dr. Who New Season SPOILER

You saw how many times he ran into the Tardis when it was cloaked right? Seems obvious why he doesn't use it more often, he'd forget where he parked.

VOTD started out well then went downhill in the second half. DIM was awful start-to-finish and it was a two-parter. :sick

I think they mentioned that somewhere in the old series (Baker?) that it just changed shape and was not invisible so that you could find it.

I have enjoyed all of the episodes so far this season but I do think the initial Silence episodes felt rushed. I think they should have done a bit more.

A question, is the ship that River kills all of the Silence in the same one that is in the lodger? I remember the Doctor mentioning in the episode that he had seen one of the ships before and wondered why it was abandoned. If someone showed up and shot everyone that would be a good reason for it to be abandon. It would have been sitting there since 1969 but they really do not specifiy where the ship was in the episode.
