New Doctor Who Series Discussion *Spoilers*

Soooooo .. "Hungry Earth"

Well, yet again they seem to go out of the way to show what a complete moron the Doctor is in this incarnation. They let him tell the kid it's okay to leave the church and get captured, setting up his mom to be the one to kill the only captive they have. Lame.

LOVE the new Silurian design though, the armor and all looks cool and let's face it, they just completely ripped off the coolness that is the Predator helmet but that's okay. Also, how did that Silurian shoot it's tongue out from the mask?

Anyway, a decent enough episode. Not enough Amy in it. Though maybe we'll get to see the Silurian disrobe Amy prior to vivisection!!!!! :love

I agree. I really want to like this Doctor but his character is being written as totally incompetent and causes more trouble than he stops. It's almost as if he ends up winning on pure dumb luck.

Can't believe I have to pop this thread back up. I feel like I'm the only one watching. My real questions are in the spoiler tag.

So what are the thoughts on Rory and the tardis piece the doctor pulls from the crack? I really liked how the Doctor and everyone else told the mom she sucked. I will admit I was a bit confused in part one when they saw themselves. I assumed since the mom had red hair the doctor was confused. Though Amy's argument that they were on the hill while Rory dies did fit with the doctors point in that it was a fixed moment in time. I thought it was an ok episode but really good character wise. I expect the ring left on the Tardis will bring the memory of Rory back to Amy or else she'll think the Doctor is proposing and we'll head down the "I'm in love with the Doctor" story again.

Next weeks episode with Bill Nighy looks interesting too but even in the promo the CGI looked bad.

I wonder if Toby Jones auditioned for the role of the Doctor and whilst they said 'No' they kept him in mind for a villain role, he definitely had Doctor-ish qualities to him

Toby was huge fun. However I wasn't convinced that the Doctor believed his own explanation for the Dream Lord.

Am I the only person who was disappointed as hell when the Doctor removed the Silurian's mask to find that human-in-makeup face underneath?

NOPE! That first part of the two parter was...crap. The "Silurians" looked like hell. They literally looked like a creature from a Star Trek Voyager episode.
I can understand the Doctor TRYING to stop the kid from getting his headphones but not managing to be quick enough and then having to let him go or things would be worse kind of thing BUT letting him go like that as if the kid were going for a stroll was just idiotic. This was not the new series finest hour on TV. I actually think Part 1 was the worst of the new series in that regard. I DO think the character development was good however it was better in Part2.

Shall we ask them to use a dog next time, then? :p

The ending of last nights episode was great!

A...dog....what...why would...Yeah so that means the Silurians were better because they didn't use a dog?

All I'm saying is that there was a big difference from this:

to this:

Which just looks as crappy as this:

I'm not saying that good writing can't save a poor creature design but I despise prosthetic foreheads.

I do agree that I liked the ending to part 2 though.

No more than in the past...

as for the Silurians...

Looks awfully different than this:

Well they should. One is a Sea Devil and is an amphibian, and the other is a Silurian and is a reptile. Regardless, they both are more compelling as creatures then a woman in a Voyager make-up appliance left over.

Technically they arent supposed to be the same sillurians as in the classic story, but a cousin species.

I liked them because they actually were able to convey *Gasp*
emotion.

I enjoyed this episode immensely. It had the classic talking to figure out peace solution, corridor running, as well as a nice WTF ending.

I didnt bump the thread though b/c i figured it would devolve into picking apart one part of the episode.

Yes, well that happens when you don't really cover their faces. Regardless, you don't NEED to do the Star Trek prosthetic to convey emotion. :lol I think I just would have preferred them to actually ave the faces that were on the masks they were wearing. The use of the actors face with barely any changes from a human face is a cheap out to get the audience to relate to the creature and feel sympathy for it...however with a good director you don't NEED to make the creature that human. District 9 is a good example of that. To me this isn't picking apart ONE aspect of the episode as it is a rather important one. I really don't want to see Doctor Who devolve from having VERY inhuman creatures and aliens to having them just be people is costumes with prosthetic make-up effects.

Regardless the episodes writing was pretty darn good in the second part if not the first part.

QFT, especially that first bit. I quite liked the look of the mask and was a bti disappointed that they didn't look like it underneath.

Thats exactly it, cousins to the Silurians, much like the Sea Devils. I disagree that they are more compelling though. More classic yes, but the reasons for the design make just as much sense. Who is not to say that THESE **** Reptila are not later along the evolutionary track according to Doctor Who and thus more "human"

I agree is a fairly Trek makeup up look, but no more than Jabe, The blue skinned guys from End of the World, Carrionites, The Cat Nurses etc... Its a makeup job on a human face. The old guys were all suits and masks, which is great too, and I KNOW we could have melded the ideas together...and that would have had a stronger classic spin on these creatures, but I do not think its more right or wrong the way they did these guys.

Doctor Who, as it ages will always change things up, I mean HOW many Cyberman designs are there? Daleks? Will we see a new Ood design in 5 years?

I like the emotions of these Silurians/Eocene cousins, you could READ the Hate from the captive Alaya all the way to the intrigue of the Scientist (forget his name).

I read one review that talked about the Trekness of these guys saying that...why not, if it can be Sherlock Holmes one week...why not Trek another?

Looking forward immesely to next week! The casting for Van Gogh looks dead on and I cannot wait!

100% agree here, second part was MUCH better than the first as far as character progression, story arc and overall themes...and the debris at the end!

My only point is, that if they had made the make up less human. Made it repulsive even to the main characters then the tension created would have been more palpable because they would have been unable to relate to them. They really would have been viewed as monsters and it would have been easier to believe the idea that they found them to be monsters. If I met one IRL I would have just thought they were wearing make-up. Really, the actress didn't even look half bad in it. XD That's just not right!

Yes, they really did a great job there. I can't fault them for character development and for the chance they took with Rory. I AM a bit confused by the choosiness by what the crack there seems to do. I mean in most instances it erases from history that which gets too close to the light...but the Doctor stuck his hand in it and pulled out that bit of debris...but that's OK since it also acted as a doorway to other worlds...but then why did it do the light tendril thing and...do the...thing...it did...to what it did...it to...<_<...yeah I forget how to do the spoiler thing...

Not a bad episode, but the Doctor was completely stupid at the end. He stuck around to screw around with the crack, putting himself and everyone else at risk, then Rory gets shot and the dork doesn't even think to pull his body into the Tardis quick.
