Netflix' Marvel Daredevil Build (all costumes)

Hi folks, figure I would drop in and post over here since the other thread is giving me a headache lol.

My red suit input...

I am starting my red suit build, as in sewing, Friday night or Saturday morning. The fabric you will not find, if you do buy a lottery ticket that same day please. I spend 8 hours on the computer looking at fabrics and the only thing that matched straight from the manufacture was the reverse side of untreated Kevlar.....of course you can't just sew that. That made me cry. Really it did... I was heart broken. So I spent hours walking around fabric stores the next day just to find something I could work with and would be comfortable. One bit of advice, make sure whatever you get you can actually sew on the machine you have available for use. Really, heavy fabrics are a strain on normal sewing machines. I settled on heavy Duck Cloth. If you are not familiar with it, it is common canvas in older duffle bags. I purchased 7 yards black and classic burgundy. Regular burgundy is too dark. It may not be perfect, but it has good color and not as difficult to work with and softens as if gets older and can be washed.

Red suit boots...if they are not Nike SFBs, I will take my pair sitting at home and eat them. I have the screen shot showing the bottom of the boot and the other leg you can tell he is still wearing a boot. The sole on the previous worn boots was not the same as the red suit. (I tried to disprove it, and it does indeed seem to be Bates in black suit)

Red suit gloves.... I believe are the same Ringers gloves with a knuckle cap put on top each knuckle. No company is going to duplicate the finger guard and glove tip of another major company without waiting for a law suit. Ringers only makes 1 other glove that looks like the black suit one, (LE edition) and the knuckles are glossy. There may be somebody out there making a knock off, or they may be old Ringers....but I just can't see it. So that is my opinion and what I am going with.

Anyway, thought I would throw that out there for any food for thought for you. I am taking a break from the research until I start building the vest. I guess you can say I am burn out on it or just had one too many people on various threads take info I have provided with proof/sound reasoning and ignore it. So my next step is a build thread end of this weekend I think. Will check in occasionally and see if I can help you folks out. Just wanted to give some advice / info on this thread since it seems to have some unanswered info.

Looch, great drawings. I may need to reference them some this weekend. My screen cap images are pretty good, but some clarification from clear drawings would be much better references especially in a hurry. :)

Thanks, Scouser. I'm working on the pants drawing right now, but they're a bit tricky.

There has been some talk on if the red suit is a one piece or 2 piece. Everybody I have spoken to agrees there is a vest on top, but underneath we can't figure it out. I am going 2 piece just because I can't imagine doing martial arts in a 1 piece suit that did not have any stretch to it.

Will take a look at your pants drawings as soon as I can after you post any of them and see if I see anything. Figure pants are the easiest part to start with, so if I can get them done by end of the weekend I am super happy. I have the boots already, so goal is pants and lower leg guards. Not sure what they are exactly, but look like they wrap around the whole leg. At least the arm you can see the straps.

I'll have the drawing up by tomrw. By the way, it is definitely a two piece outfit, pants and jacket-or three piece, based on the way the top looks, all vest-like and stuff.

Thank you guys so much for this.
I ordered the boots and gloves today.
I'm looking into XtremedesignsFX regarding the cowl as well as a friend in Orlando that is trying to copy and mod a Captain America helmet.
I'm looking into making the bracers(arm guards), greaves (leg guards) and black "armor" sections out of thick leather of TerraFlex. Both from Tandy Leather.

I love the idea of duck cloth for the red and black parts of the vest. I was thinking of using a dry tech type of fabric for the "saddle section" (inseam/ crotch) of the legs.

For his red suit, have you guys considered this stuff suggested in the other thread?

FWIW I asked the costume designer for the show and she told me the fabric they used for the red suit "was 3-D printed".

Oh, it's definitely expensive ($41 per square yard) but it looks like it might be the closest stuff around to the actual suit's material in terms of accuracy. Like I said, just a suggestion. :)
Is this cheaper?

Unless I'm missing something? Maybe you can choose different thicknesses as well

Looking at that versus duck cloth, I will stick to duck cloth. I like the price (especially since I got it on sale) plus the fact I can paint it if I want to. Granted the pattern on the DD suit would be annoying to try and add to any cloth, I could do it if I really wanted to drive myself insane lol. But seriously, if the color ever started to fade I could fix it. Plus repairs could be easier if I have material available. I am sure some people will use that because it is a good choice also....but for that same price or close to it, why not try for custom printed?

I dunno... I don't care for the black dots in it either...just my personal preference. I rather have a solid red (or other solid color) like I am used to seeing in the suit. From a distance (before I make the image bigger) the color of that material and my duck cloth are basically the same, so to me any photos or anybody seeing it from a few feet away or more most likely won't see any difference. Just my 2 cents worth.

Any chance anyone has made a complete list of where to find each item for the vigilante black uniform? Looking to get everything ready for an upcoming event for charity in Los Angeles!

Thanks for any help I can get. I'm new to these type of sites and still learning the ropes lol.

Billy

If I am right about the styles then the boots can be found at Dicks sporting goods, pants at military surplus stores, I'm assuming. Shirt at McDavids or ebay, belt on ebay, arm padding on ebay or sporting good store (McDavids) mask will be up to you and gloves not sure about.

Gloves are the Ringers carbon tactical (not the LE since they have glossy knuckles) for most of the season. I think the first 2 shows there is a different glove, but I have not sat around long enough to find it. I would say go with Ringers though. It is the most visible and has been seen in a lot of screen shots.

Not every site uses the appropriate titles and product art. I've seen LE/Law Enforcement used in the Ringer 557 names associated with both glossy and matte-knuckled glove photos. Though it's also been used with photos of both versions, I believe the proper brand variant is "stealth."

The wrong shirt and elbow pad are pictured here. The belt may have a brushed or chrome buckle/tab.

If they are calling it anything but carbon tactical, they are mislabeling it in my opinion. I get the name from the manufacturer.

LE is a lot of times just Law Enforcement...but it is just a category, not part of the actual name. Ringers does not even show the glossy ones, so must be old version.

Adding 557 since it is part of the Manufacture number to me is kinda misleading because the number is associated with size also. So 557-??

Just my 2 cents though..

Sorry, I wasn't clear - I meant that within the set of "Ringers 557 Carbon Tactical" the "LE/Law Enforcement" addition didn't indicate glossy knuckles. I have seen them sold without the word "stealth," which is included with the current product description on the site. Perhaps the glossy knuckles are the older model, and Ringers added the word stealth when updating the product to the correct version.

Here's my sketch of the pants. Still not quite sure what is going on with the black fabric at the back, but I will check again tonight and modify when I have figured it out.IMG_2016.JPG

Thanks Looch! I bought some patterns when I was at the fabric store yesterday. I plan to draw on them where the red and black should be so I can hopefully make this easier on me. Hopefully these will help with the process too!
