Nerf Scout Trooper Blaster Repaint

Astyanax got a set of printed parts to me for testing today, and I just sent the latest batch of revisions back to him for printing. I don't want to set anyone's expectations too high, but I've got to say, as we work on this I'm getting pretty excited.

Agreed, it's looking good! And here's a teaser for a potential addition being tested...

The scope was a nightmare of sanding, spraying, messing up, resanding, rain messing up the wet coat, a guy coming by with a weedwhacker while I was spraying and getting shmutz all over it... But now it's final. I found a black plastic washer in my parts bin and screwed it to the top knob.

It was nice and sunny today and the body came together wonderfully. Two coats of primer and a light sanding and it looks great. This is about as far as I can go until the final logo cover part from Astyanax arrives.

By the way, I've found it somewhat difficult to get the primer to adhere securely to the printed resin, even with sanding – it does stick, but tends to chip off if scratched.

I recommend an adhesion promoter before the primer coat. I've got an old can of this stuff, basically a sprayable solvent, and it works wonders.

I have found the Rustoleum 2x "Painter's Touch" Paints/Primers to stick quite well to the resin, as well as Dupli-Color Sealer Primer, which is a nice thin, fine-particle primer.

However, I also never paint if the humidity is above 60% without warming the can first (and never over 70% at all). Even then, I prefer to paint only when the humidity is in the 50s.

Additionally, the resin should be pre-washed with soapy water and free of fingerprints. I use nitrile gloves when handling it.

The weather finally turned aorund and I got a chance to finish up my blaster. There's four different finishes on this one: matte, satin, and semi-gloss blacks, and a graphite rub on the main body with a satin clearcoat. Weathering was done with Tamiya weathering powders plus some brown craft paint, and a drybrush of Tamiya Mica Silver. I also dropped a 25mm watch glass into the back of the scope for some added realism.

If I were to do this again, I would mask off the posts and ports for the scope attachment before painting; the scope refused to clip all the way on and I ended up needing to glue it.
