Nerf Gun Props? YES!

Hey, guys (and primarily Johnson), what particular clear coat are ya' all using? I've been using a matte finish krylon spray, but I really don't like how it makes my piece look after I've sprayed it. Any tips?

I've been having similar problems with the clear coat I have. Tips would be cool on this subject.

Talking of clear coats. I tried doing a black wash using diluted paint the other day and it made the paint underneath come off, do you add a layer of clear before doing the wash?

I generally use acryllics for washes. Since it is water based, it doesn't interact with the base enamel coats. Once your washes and weathering is complete, then clear coat.

All roads lead to the RPF. I picked up the Nerf bug recently and have been pouring over the web looking at custom paint jobs and mods. It doesn't surprise me that the very best of the best work I found out there is done by RPF members. There is some truly inspirational work going on in this thread by everyone. I am looking forward to sharing some of my own soon.

There's also the technique of mixing acrylic paint with windex, which dries nicely.

Testors makes a product called "Dullcote" which is a lacquer-based matte finish. You can get it in a spray can or in a bottle.

Be careful. In my experience, lacquers eat enamels. You can spray enamels over dried lacquer, but the reverse could cause some problems.

Thanks for the tip, Mister Scrub :) Yeah, try not to wash with anything that can eat at the underlying surface. I do both, but it's always an exciting time when I get to see if hours of work are about to be destroyed! lol

Good luck with the washes, it takes some practice, but the results are really worth it, in my opinion. I'll look forward to seeing how it comes out for you guys!

New folks, welcome! :) Members, thanks for keeping the tips coming for those needing help!

Keep in mind that what works for one person, might not for another. There's a lot of things I do that go against conventional wisdom, but with repeated testing, I've found ways to make them work. I hope you'll just keep it fun (and as cheap as possible..lord this hobby can get expensive quickly!)

I've taken another batch of commissions, one of which is going to be a Pulse Rifle clad Stampede. The body is being fabricated right now and I'll post some photos once I get some paint onto it. Sorry for no turtorial, but we're still trying to get the pattern down first so I don't lead any of you guys down the wrong path :)

I've got quite a few other big projects on the way, I can't wait to share what I've been up to.

Thanks for the thread support and let me know if I can be of assistance. Big projects are starting to eat up my free time, but I'm still finding some time for the fun stuff I can share with ya :)

Still haven't had my question answered about what kind of clear coat to use...:rolleyes

You're kidding! How do you get it to look so nice? Do you sand the clear coat or something?

Dang, you had to ask a question that I don't share unfortunately. I will say that it has to do with the weather in which you use it. I wish I could share more, but Slugworth's henchman read this thread too :)

Really, I appreciate if you understand about some of the secrets. I hope
You'll experiment with it though, knowing there is a way to make it work for ya!

Oh, quite understandable! I'll just continue my experiments and hope to get closer to your level of expertise. It is fun to try, anyway.

Keep that fun as long as possible. It quickly gets away from ya and the fun hobby becomes a second or third job :) I wish you the best with it!

JohnsonArms, you are a paint genius. I hope my own work comes out as nicely as yours. Your choice of colour and break up of where the colours go are incredible. Your weathering is perfect. I know you've probably heard it all before, but hey, never hurts to hear it again.

I have my Maverick sanded down and am building the custom parts and greeblies to add before I start painting. The Mave seems to be a common initiation piece. I also have a Rayven and Longstrike that I intend to tackle. I want to find a supressor from a Spectre to throw on my Rayven. Next time I'm in the states I'll be going to Walmart.

I need to find a good new hosting place for my images though. Imageshack is letting me down big time.

Might I suggest that before you paint them, taking some very fine sandpaper, like around 800 grit or more, and sanding the nerf labels off if you want them to be a bit more realistic. I was thinking about doing it myself with a nerf gun I have myself. ( already had to fix the shooting action cause it had stopped pushing air properly)
