Johnson, if I'm ever out that way, I would love to take you up on that. An afternoon at your shop is probably more fun than going to Disneyland.
I tried my hand at painting. Meh...
I hate working with Bondo. I filled in the seams and screw holes and removed the raised text. I cut the end off the cocking lever and replaced it with a replica loop ring so that I can still cock it. The lens cap did not come off well so I replaced it with a Armor-All Spray cap and a bit from an old Darth Vader figure's lightsaber. I wet-sanded the final coat and did a lot of wiping on and off water based acrylic paints to assist with the weathered look. Like I said... Meh.
Hey all,
I followed my "leader" Brian, of JohnsonArms, here. Thought it would be a good place to get some ideas, advice and feedback. I'm super impressed with everything I've seen.
A quick bit of history, them a few pics:
I teach modelling and animation at the high-school level in Vancouver, B.C. We got a 3D printer (makerbot) this year and started looking for things to print. Around the same time a friend of mine started steampunking Nerf guns. Well if that wasn't a marriage made in heaven, I don't know what is.
So I started "farting" around, trying to figure out how to do the modelling, printing and the painting good enough to teach it to a bunch of teenagers. I discovered JohnsonArms and the rest was history. Brian is the GOD of this stuff and was very nice to me from the first e-mail and phone call.
So I've become a bit addicted to painting guns, and I'm not really sure why. I'm Canadian, we don't really "do" guns. I guess it's the creative side of me.
So I've done a few guns, modeled and printed a few parts and am now teaching a group of kids how to take a purple Nerf gun and paint it black and make it realistic, all inside a high-school classroom. I'm just waiting for the police to show up =)
So here's a couple guns, sorry about the bad picture quality, cell phone pics:
I went back and did some more weathering and added a faux lens. I'm much happier with the outcome.

HaystackHair's deviantART Gallery
I'm pretty new to the RPF, but I've been modding and painting for quite a few years now, thought it was worth posting my latest Seburo-styled Nerf Rayven and Element.
Mods to Rayven:
-Logos and camo texture sanded off
-Side tactical rail removed and replaced with sheet HIPs
-Seburo logos CNC'd in sticky vinyl and stuck on sides
-Paint job including stencilled writing (eg. POLICE)
-All locks and safety mechanisms removed
-On/off switch installed and located on the left side
Element:
-Paint job with stencils
-Section underneath (flashlighty thing?) cut off and replaced with a section of a broken magazine
-Weighted
-AR removed
Any C&C for my next lot would be appreciated![]()
