Neill Blomkamp's Chappie (Post-release)

Oh dear God....not looking pretty.

I so wanted to see this too. It seems like this is a definite Netflix viewing for me only, as too many reviews are negative on this one for me to waste my money. Too bad, with all the cold and snow I really wanted to take in a flick tonight. Guess it is off to the mall with the family to burn some cash.

One more review...

When I saw Chappie with the gang members I was waiting for him to say -
"Los Lobos kick your *****, Los Lobos kick your face, Los Lobos kick your Balz into outer space."
Sorry, I liked this film when it was call Short Circuit 1 and 2.

Just saw it and I've got mixed feelings about it, there's some things done really well and some really distracting things. The CGI is pretty amazing and Chappie looks fully realized within the world and the performance is really great. I find Die Antwoord really confusing, because they're playing themselves, only they're gangsters, but their music is in the background constantly and their bands branding is plastered all over the movie. I thought they worked as characters within the film but it was a bit distracting sometimes seeing and hearing so much of their content it jst took me out of the movie which was a shame. Perhaps that's only because I'm familiar with their work, would be interested to see what people who didn't know anything about Ninja and Yolandi made of it all. Overall I thought there was a lot to like about the film, it's pretty decent, I'd say it's better than Elysium but not as good as District 9.

I saw it this morning. I had been waiting a long time for this movie because I really like Neill Blomkamp. It wasn't mind blowingly good, but I actually enjoyed it. I don't quite understand where all the hate is coming from on this. It definitely wasn't a bad movie.

Yeah it's decent...whether you can accept Die Antwoord in a film and take them seriously might be a major factor in whether you want to see the film.

Visually amazing. The Moose battle was a bit anti climatic. I really expected more from Chappie.

He downloaded part of the internet but bypassed the important part of what knives and sharp objects actually do to people...

Ninja and Yolandi actually aren't bad actors either!?

Blomkamp still has great ideas floating around in his brain. It's just the message doesn't come across very well or is just in your face obvious causing people to eye roll... :eek:hwell

At this point, I want to write Blomkamp off as a one trick pony. It's not that any of his movies are particularly bad... it's just that they seem different shades of the same color.

The problem with Chappie isn't that it's not necessarily a bad movie, it's that it didn't try to be a good movie - it's just Blomkamp doing what he does. It's solid, if not by-the-books - and that's disappointing - because the movie just looked so much better in previews than it even came close to in full length.

Seriously, based on the previews and the commercials this like it could've been the next E.T. instead we get more Elysium and more District 9. While neither are terrible flicks, neither really go to the "next level" and Chappie just hovers at that same level - but, what brings it down is just how powerful the lead up was and ultimately makes it disappointing. I know, it's not really fair to judge a book by it's cover or a movie by trailers... but, man... Chappie will always be a much better 2 minute trailer or 30 second commercial than the 2 hour movie I just saw.

At this point, I really don't care if I see this guy take a stab at Alien. Sure, we'll get amazing looking robots, aliens and maybe even some action - but, I don't know if Blomkamp has the overall movie/horror/action acumen to do Alien justice.

Only message I got was that Jackmans character was a religious nut job. And that hardcore gangsters can still somehow be good protagonists in a director ****ed up head.

There were a couple of moments that seemed to show that Jackman's character had some religion - but, to say he was a "religious nut job" based on those very minor moments is reading a whole lot into this movie. Anyone might say something vaguely religious or even make sign of the cross (as Jackman did)... but that hardly makes them religious.

There are much deeper metaphors in this (that didn't work IMO) about religion... any movie where a robot asks its creator "Why did you make me so I would die?” is trying a bit too hard to make those overtones... even if that whole issue is just as quickly dropped and not really pursued.

But as far as Jackman's Vincent being a "religious nutjob." No, he's just a nutjob with a gun.
